Shakespeare described Othello as a Moor he meant Othello was an Arab or of Arabian descent. He certainly wasn't "black" and as a Moor he would not be darker than many Italians. The tension in the play is because he is not a Venetian but because of his competence has been given military command which the Venetian Iago thinks should have been his by rights. Othello's race is incidental, he is an outsider taking a local job but years of actors on the English stage blacking up to play Othello has created a purely racial element to this play. This current NT production having Othello as former black African slave is just another example of modern directors trying to be woke and seeing everything through the lens of black slavery and racial hatred. I suppose casting an Arab actor as Othello doesn't fit the current agenda.

WOKE attitudes are the new fascism. But what do you make of WS including the inconsistent insult 'thick lips' in the play?

@@rosemaryallen2128 is it a description of physical feature or figure of speech like saying a person is cold hearted, hot blooded, has a thick head? Maybe thick lips means he speaks with a foreign accent the implication being they don't pronounce words properly. The Moor wasn't a native Venetian speaker
