When I worked for him in 1971 for a short time, he was already an icon...I was nobody...still am...no probs. I remember going with him to inspect a premises not too far from his offices. He said "can you run", so we jogged to our destination. I liked him beneath all the cultural agenda back then....a good man.
I started my architectural career in this house. The couple’s one son is an engineer responsible for almost all of the architectural technological achievements in South Africa. My current office has a roof that is based on the same geometric principle as this house. Even though it’s just a house its actually very architecturally significant.
The view through the living room window, the light, the shadows, the tree that she planted, the swimming pool that he built for her, the groundedness, the love. Thank you.
This ones inspiring. Since 1965 till the present day they have lived there. The house must have lots of stories to tell if it could. That's amazing :) Thanks for this one Nowness
on the surface but watch closely when he claims they're happily married: her mouth is down in a bit of subtle contempt, her head moves just slightly to indicate 'no' and then her hands both move, a tell that she's not happy and probably hasn't been for a long time, maybe she's even cheated but would never admit it.
@@markhirstwood4190 I hardly think you have the right to come to a deduction such as that through psychoanalysis from less than 4 minutes of footage of them.
That is a timeless house. So youthful and up to date as the 91 years young Gawie. He died at 95 on 13th September 2020. Let him rest in peace. The house will go on.
This house, its builders, and dwellers represent a unique philosophy of how to live intimately and enjoy life! The way the light falls onto a particular space, the shadows of objects, the wind gushing through the trees... inside, outside, altogether makes the place seem so serene and yet so alive! I adore its atmosphere! I could spend hours just sitting with this solitude doing absolutely nothing!
As a proudly South African Civil Engineering student this video humbles and inspires me. That Camps Bay wind is really something. Anyone else from the Mother City?
Hey Joshua, we on the other side of the hill ,Vredehoek! We also know about the wind but wouldn't want to live anywhere else than the good old Mother City !!
Years later, I watch it again, still believe this is the house I like the most in Nowness channel. A house full of life, love, soul, knowledge and wisdom.
just landed on this lovely 4 minutes of love, creativeness...life well lived. Inspirational and tender...I am lucky to have something very special with my Honey also...
This house will always be theirs. Anyone else who lives in it will be care takers. This house has a life and personality all of its own, created and nurtured by Gawie and Gwen. Just beautiful. Is it just, me or are these videos deeply meditative and mesmerising?
Wow. They are couple goals. And I love the house. Every part of it. Seems like they had strong values and treasure the most important things in life. To me that’s what a home is- a place to treasure the most important things in life. 🥰🥰
My husband and I are 45 years together.we absolutely adore each other.Amazing couple Love has made you last.love has made us last.your bot beautiful and inspiraring .awesome video Yvonness
Very old but an amazing place that has been a long history with the owner! :) Beautiful!!! Still beautiful and I believe that this is what house should be like, not own to sell but own to live. I am living in Seoul, South Korea. I feel like the concept of home here is a place to make an additional profit not a place to actually stay. Moving to different place hurts me so much but it is now a kind of a routine. Housing market is just a bubble. This is what I love to see. I was looking for something like this. Such an inspiration and a source of healing. Thanks so much for sharing! :)
Unfortunately we aren’t exposed to older couples like this very often. If you were to tell me we’ll be watching a short film on an older couple’s home, I’d expect something along the lines of Hoarders. This couple is just fabulous!
"We're very happily married, thank goodness, after 65 years -- and the fact that I can live here with Gwen is what makes it nice for me."
Oh my god thats what got me too!
lovely story inspire me.
Rangel beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏
😍😍😍

Is their son Henry Allan Fagan or are they different Fagans?
Thanks for sharing your history - interesting!
@@hellizma they're the same Fagans
What's the principle behind the roof design?
I agree, simple lines built according to radical principles.

Such a timeless house, even though it is quite old it doesn't look stuck in a certain decades aesthetic
not only is their house beautiful, they are a beautiful couple.
totally agreed
And a beautiful video and photography too!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I love when he describes the door!

It's the people that make a house like that. The house is merely a blank canvass on which to express yourself, what a wonderful video.

Beautiful video right? What an incredible force of love and inspiration - Gwen and Gawie!
You can feel the genuineness in the house and in also in his words when he says, l’ve been happily married...
Two old people living happily ever after!
91yrs old and clambering up ladders to change the clock.
#goals
My father is like that too. But recently he has quit driving. Not as sharp as he used to be, he says.
Oh yeah! This is the perfect example of a life that must have a great fulfillment! Because only then will you stay so young and joyful for so long.
When the door opened to the full body mirror...my jaw dropped. Seconds later, I realized it was not a mirror. Wow!
a beautiful story captured within a beautiful home, one of my favorite videos of the series so far --thank you
Wow since 1965. What a great life to they have been living there all these years.
Thank you, Nowness, for making me fall in the moment od now watching your magical videos! Wonderful!
Beautifully shot and produced. I felt like a welcome, quiet guest in their timeless house. Amen to their aesthetics and joy de vivre.

Thank you
91??!! Seems like he is incredible health for 91 !!!!!!
i have a great aunt that's 94. Speaking to her over the phone you'd think she's in her 30's. Some people.
Besides this amazing architecture there's a story of love and happiness. Kudos for them.
I like how the trees move with the wind as if they are happily dancing ...
3:04 = chills // Beautiful space and elegant cinematography. Well done.
These are the pioneers of South Africa, quietly working at building up and bettering spaces around them.

gawie headed into the great blue yonder yesterday. respect + fair winds...
he died? If so, what a shame- this man seemed so healthy and intact for his age in this video.

I think that is the modern way, worldwide unfortunately !!
The fact that he can live here with Gwen. Sweet.
I love the ingenuity of this house, like the big door made from old copper hot water tanks!
Beautiful home. Inspirational couple.

Very lovely
It's their love to make it a paradise.
Linda casa adoraveis moradores!💚💛💙🇧🇷
Love this!
Loved this but why put this music? The dark, serious tunes, the piano, strings, etc., seem to tell something different from Gawie and Gwen's story.
THIS IS GOLD
I love it!
