Should not take more than 10 shots to zero a Red Dot 🎯

  • Lots of clients have gotten optics for their pistols but don't know how to zero them.
So I zero red dots for clients on demand.
I first take 1 shot at 1 inch square at 10yds to see how far off the dot is, and make initial elevation and windage click adjustments.
Then, take 3 shots. If they group inside the 1 inch square at 10yds, it's good.
Then, another 3 shots at 25yds to make sure there's no major deviation at long distance.
    1. Why 10 yards initially? Why free standing and not use a benchrest?
Because 10yds is far enough and difficult enough that a good shooter should be able to keep a 1 inch group or better. There won't be much deviation between point of aim and point of impact at distances closer than that and beyond that.
And no need to get so micro-obsessive about accuracy that you need to benchrest -- imagine if I had to take the time to benchrest everyone's gun in a group red dot class -- not time efficient for not much more accuracy.
For practical defensive and class purposes, if free standing at 10yds is good enough for mentors like @myowndefender @modern_samurai_project it's good enough for me.
    2. Verifying at 25yds is optional -- if I'm short on time and don't want to take too much time away from the client's lesson, 10yds is good enough. If it's my competition gun and I have to be sure of my zero at long distance, then I will verify at 25yds.
Zeroing for clients should be quick and not use up the client's time or their ammo.
    3. Zeroing in front of clients is a great way to demonstrate my fundamental process and also show them that I'm human too and can get mentally distracted and how to pull myself back to focusing on the process.

I'm surprised you don't benchrest the firearm while zeroing. I may also be trying to get far too much perfection when I zero.

I explained why I don't benchrest in the video description. Competent shooters don't need to benchrest and you don't gain that much more precision IF you are a competent shooter.
