I love your channel! I've been cutting dies the WRONG way for a decade lol. You have inspired me with a lot of your projects. Your room tour was awesome. I really want to totally re do mine. TFS, Diana.
Such a great idea and fun...as you were showing us! What a great way to come up with new embellishments, especially with Christmas clearances as well. Thanks for sharing, I will check out Angelica's video too.
Neat idea, to recycle older cards. As much as it meant to receive a sweet card it’s really great to be able to share and send out one that made me smile as well. Tfs😀
My Mom, Grandma and I used to do this every year. We would cut them out by hand then cut colored paper just a little larger for behind it. Then punch a hole in both of them, run a ribbon through the holes and tie it. We would use these the following Christmas for tags. This brings back happy memories. Thank you!
My mother in law took old cards, food cans and metal cutters to make Christmas decorations their first year. They came out beautiful and I still have a few.
I have recycled my old cards for years. My Mom also would reuse them as package tags the next year. Now that I have dies, my cuts will look more professional. Thanks for the great video!
Love this. I usually just cut with fancy scissors, but this is a great idea using die cuts. I will use on other cards, birthday, thank you etc. Thank you for sharing.
Its the little things that make us crafters HAPPY 😊 I did this trick for this years Christmas cards I sent out and already started recreating my old cards into new ones. No more boxed cards for me. I only did straight cuts but I love the idea of die cuts giving it that extra wow factor. It would be a cool idea to do a recycled Christmas card swap with other crafters.
These are so cute! I think people tend to forget that cards are basically designer scrapbook paper in the end because they're so used to them being marketed for one purpose. You could also attach pockets to them and make mini folders for traveler's notebooks too. Laminate and make into dividers/dashboards or cover chipboard and make them into covers for notebooks. If you had a blank inside or something you don't mind covering up, you can glue preprinted recipe cards (or stamp them) there so you could make an entire recipe book.
Not cheap at all. Great way to reuse and resort to your imagination. What I did find cheap is the mother/daughter idea I saw of reusing cards by sticking post-it inside for their signature...
@@thepeddler9226 I've seen a similar sort of things but I thought it was cool. It was a Father's Day card that went back to the son every year and he'd write a new message in it every year and give back to this dad. It ended up being a card that went back and forth for years and was full of love.
@@iamcalledbex I remember seeing something like that and I thought that was a great idea; it's a treasure, really, when you think about it. Not just the messages, but as the son grows you can see (I hope) the changes in the handwriting and the messages too - actually the father would say something different to a toddler and a teenager. Isn't that a great souvenir?
Great minds think alike!! I love to do this with not only Christmas but other old cards too! To further your idea, when I am purchasing boxes of tissue, I look for pretty patterns so I can die cut out pieces of the box to use on my cards! My husband thinks I'm nuts! Ha, ha!!
Me too! I do that with everything cuttable... is it pretty enough for a tag, or a background? I even use the backs of cards ( that I dont want to recycle into another card or tag) for grocery lists. The weight of them makes it easier to hold while shopping then a thin piece of paper.
Oh Deanna, What a great idea! I Have a lot of cards, guess I'll start this project first, just as soon as I tidy up my crafting space. TFS, You're Amazing!
I used to buy boxes of Christmas cards in the January sales and make my own decpoupage and then use the verses also you have envelopes too , it's so much cheaper than buying decpoupage kit . Calendars make lovely big cards .😀
I love doing this. Been doing it for a few years now and so many dies you can use to cut out different shapes. I even keep old/last year's calendars and do the same thing. Those pictures are just beautiful. I just pick a day that I want to cut up cards & calendars and make tags or just as an accent on a homemade card, bag, box, bookmark. Works very well. TYFS
We uses to use craft paper for wrapping and stamp with colors that match the recycled cards. My mom and I started this in the 70’s. Thanks for the memory!
Just a tip: if you angle your die with your paper before you run your die through your machine, it will run through so much smoother without that “bump”. Some dies (squares, rectangles, anything with straight lines) are better ran through the machine at an angle. 😊 Thanks for your videos! 😍
Love your idea! You sound like you are having so much fun. I don’t throw away my old Christmas cards. I alphabetize them and then check all the return addresses. But using your idea, I could save all the envelopes and then use dies to cut up the cards. This is great, because it means I would then have ephemera for next Christmas all ready to go!!
Bravo! I never ever thought to do this and it’s so awesome! I’m always at a Loss for sentiments so diecutting those opens a whole new world ! Thank you so much:)
Cute idea. So many possible applications. I store my dies on magnetic sheets. I think the sheets are like copier paper size. I got mine from Amazon. I then put them in page protectors, slip them in a three ring binder. Voila!!! Keeps the dies organized and easy to keep track of.
I was part of a card exchange this year and this is a great way to reuse all those pretty images! AND... I got a scan n cut for Christmas which I just unboxed today... so I am going to try using it to chose the frames to cut them out with, and get perfect sizing and placement... and even cut out the shapes themselves. Thanks for the great idea!!!!!
I always use the card fronts for tags. I even buy dollar tree cards, and fussy cut out everything that I can, and use all the pieces whenever I'm making my own cards. But...I have NEVER thought about using my dies! That is genius! I, also, love my Bigshot. But it is a "workout". I'm thinking of purchasing a Gemini someday in the future. It's electric, and I believe you just push a button. Thanks for showing us this brilliant idea. It just amazes me of all the different things we can do as crafters! I look at everything closely before throwing it out. I always try to repurpose anything I can. So many ideas, so little time! Lol. Wanna try this idea soon...thanks again. ❣ ~Suzy~
Well aren’t you the clever one! What a great idea! Some people are too smart for words! This will be my weekend project. Some of these cards are so perfect for this up cycle project. Happy New Year to you! Blessings.
I place my dies on a magnetic sheet. The sheets are from Lowe’s or Home Depot and they are used as radiator covers. I cut them down to 5 x 7 and place them in a plastic case. I keep the name of the dies in the case. I also do this if I have a matching stamp set. And I store them together. I love my big shot, and I count the rolling as Aerobic Exercise! 🤪🤪🤪
@Gloria Pollack What department of the store do I look for those sheets? I live in Florida and I'm not sure we have radiators here, so they might not carry them in my store. Thanking you in advance for your reply.
Very cute idea! But just a tip when dies cutting. You should really turn your square and rectangle dies at an angle before putting them through your machine. That way it won't "jump" as you put it through. Plus it'll be a lot easier to crank through.
I just got a Sizzix big shot with bonus material for my christmas present to me for 78.00. I'm super excited to use it. I wanted to thank you for the tip about the tape to hold the die cut in place.
I made my first Xmas ornament from a Xmas card and a pot pie pan when I was in the first grade, circa 1957. The image was of the Holy Family. I wish I still had it, but someone(s) stole my mother's box of Christmas decorations out of the utility room on the car port (many, many years ago) when she was hospitalized for an extended amount of time.

I’ve been making gift tags from cards for decades, well before I scrapbooked. Have made up cycled cards once. Super easy when there was no time to make any.
Small pieces of blue painter's tape will hold the cutting dies to the paper but will not ruin the paper when removed. I even reuse the pieces of tape- just stick it to the edge of my counter and reuse.
Hey Deanne, I love doing this with all my cards I almost got this oval set. You can use cut out parts as frames also 😊 TFS hope you are well after our busy season.

What a great idea to recycle old cards. I have all my sisters old cards that I was fussy cutting the images, but now I’ll be using my dies.
Awesome
I hope in Nov or Dec 2020, you do a video showing us the cards you make with these cut outs :)
The Mermaid's Tale I did that too!!
Thanks Deanna as always another great idea I know what I will be doing today and thanks to angelica for sharing her ideas as well ya ladies are awesome

I’ve been saving my cards for just this reason, looks great Deanna! 😀
Awesome

What a lovely idea. I buy the magnetic vent covers from the hardware store, and get cut them to fit each set of dies I have. It's much easier than fiddling with tape.
Interesting idea! Thank you
You can keep your dies together and not have to fight tape if you use shelf adhesive magnet strips or sheets. Just a suggestion, I do it that way and it works out well.
Wow, what a genius idea. I have never thought of that.
Thank you
I hope they still have it, thank you for checking. ;)
Thank you
I use both plates for the die cutting on my big shot. I use it in my kitchen counter and for me, it’s easier when I’m standing
I’ve been making gift tags from cards for decades, well before I scrapbooked. Have made up cycled cards once. Super easy when there was no time to make any.
Great video I wish I had one of those machines...
old idea but so fun watching you discover it!
Thank you I enjoy doing something new and I’ve never done that before it was genius
Small pieces of blue painter's tape will hold the cutting dies to the paper but will not ruin the paper when removed. I even reuse the pieces of tape- just stick it to the edge of my counter and reuse.
Your ephemera pieces came out fantastic! You have been inspiring others through your videos, I just hope to do the same. Hugs to you sweet Deanna! 💞
Well you gave inspired me today! Big crafty hugs!
I love this idea!! Thanks for sharing 🌸
Thank you
It would be super fun to use the cut out parts to make a card and send it to the person next year!
I use magnetic sheets to keep my dies organized.
Super idea!
Terry Cowans That is the best idea ever! I would love to do this. Thanks for that ❤️
Hey Deanne, I love doing this with all my cards I almost got this oval set. You can use cut out parts as frames also 😊 TFS hope you are well after our busy season.

Can you share the link to buy the same machine that you have ? Everything looks so cute and easy. Thanks

Yes!
It was great watching you have so much fun making embellishments from your cards. I will be investing in a cutting machine, which do you recommend?
The big shot is good. Very convenient. I’m thinking about the Gemini.
You could get a real small crochet needle and crochet a boarder around it and make it for the tree.
If I could only crochet 😳
That's what I've done for years

Hi
What is the machine cutter that you are using called?
Is such a great idea, I have done for a while. (helping to save the planet) You can even use them to decorate your gifts bags. Add some tags and voila!

I've been recycling my Christmas cards for years crocheting around the edges and using as tags or ornaments. Deanna you would have better luck running squares through leading with a corner. The straight edge leading horizontal to the roller is a big bump to roll through in one pass. Thanks for the video.
Thank you

It’s a Sizzix Big Shot or Big Kick. You can also get electric versions for more money. Anna Griffin sells two sizes of an Empress that will cut her very intricate metal dies on Home Shopping Network (HSN). Hope this helps.
I found it! They still have it at Michael thank you so much!!
Yvonne Bowman I’m going tomorrow to try and find the Sizzix die.
Yay!
I liked the back of the first card. It was dsrk blue with a white snowflake. Thanks for sharing.

Deanna. I gave my group girls a magnetic tray from Harbor Freight. Looks like an ashtray. 4” or 6” works great when using small dies so u don’t end up accidentally throwing them away or loosing them on floor.
Thank you
This is a great idea. I even thought with the first one you did, you could have used a large square or rectangle and gotten a snowflake with the Happy Holidays and made a nice big sized gift card with the sentiment on it.
Cutouts would make great gift tags also

Deanna this is just the thing I’ve been looking for! I have boxes and boxes of cards. I wanted to repurpose them, but had no inspiration. This could not be more perfect!! Thanks for sharing...your excitement is infectious!
