- Learn to knit Viking style! A simple, no bull video about getting started with Nalbinding.
In this video we're looking an how to start top down, like from the crown of a hat, or the toe of a sock.
We're using York stitch! This is the way I do it and the way I find easiest. It may not work for everyone, but it may work for someone who's tried other ways.
Nalbinding, naalbinden, nålbinding, knotless knitting, Viking knitting...

I have watched so many nålbinding videos and they all end up not showing/explaining what is going on clearly. I watched this video.... Without even having the tools in my hand and could see EXACTLY what is going on. You explain it clearly. You don't add lots of complicated unnecessary information. You may not be an 'expert nålbinder' but you're a born teacher!
Thats very kind of you! I do try to give the best information I can ☺️
All the ones I've seen usually do five stitches and that's it. 😂
Clearest instructions of any craft I’ve seen thus far!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this!! I look forward to your increasing and decreasing videos. That’s what I’m struggling to understand right now. You make this so much easier to understand!☺️
I'm glad you found it easy to understand! I know there are many great tutorials out there already, but I hope that seeing things through a new perspective helps the process "click" for those not quite sure.
Hey Ari! Just thought I'd let you know the increasing video is up now :)

The simplicity of explanation & the camera work are great !!!! The comparison about the different types Nalebinding was the first I'd heard, wish I'd heard that 4 years ago when I started investigating it.
There's always new things to learn, and everyone has their own approach. While don't commonly practice ALL the different ways of nalbinding, I do think that UA-cam is an excellent platform for communicating the differences, especially to help beginners find what works for them, so I try to share whatever I know about the topics I talk about 😊
I was actually taught this when i was a kid. My grandma showed me a bunch of different yarn things growing up. I didn’t realize it was a so taste of a skill. She loved yarn so much. She mostly did knitting as I got older though. I wish I was more patient when I was younger and stuck to it. I think I want to start trying it again. I have already re-picked up knitting and crocheting. I only ever learned the basics of both of them. And I am getting a Turkish spindle. I can’t believe this brought up forgotten memories this brought up.
Grandparents can leave such lasting impressions in unexpected ways ❤
OOOHHHHHHH!!! That's a much easier way to understand it!
Hello from Calgary Canada just found your videos. I find Nalbinding very interesting. Suggesting for your videos is to show more stitches close up. Maybe a video on a simple project for the beginners 😅 Thank you Jacquie 😊
Wow your videos are soooo helpful! I've been struggling with this for so long! A million times thank you 🙂
You are very welcome! I love being able to help :D
Looks a lot like magic loop to me, my favourite closed cast on
Found this video helpful for starting!! Thanks ylva. The bit about persevering was good! I was about to give up (for today) then I think something clicked! And I've managed a little ring. It is quite fun breaking a puzzle. I'm going to watch the second row video now! Thanks ☺
That's awesome, well done!! Now you're up and running ☺
You made this easier to understand than others I have watched.Thank You
Happy to be of assistance! 😊
interesting. I've never seen a round start worked like this, but it's seems like it's easier to remember what to do as I often forget the other method I know xD. Will try this
Hopefully you find it helpful! It's the method that works best for me.
I would love to make a shawl in this thank you so much for this never heard of it before
Wow, very nicely done. Thank you
Thank you! I'm trying to get better at editing, so I hope this is easy to understand ☺
Ylva The Red Perfectly clear. I am going to go back and have another look at your earlier nalbinding videos.
@@pickingupsticks6767 the earlier ones are not as... polished, but apparently have still been helpful!
I can get the first row okay on both you nalbinding and the nalbinding on the thumb, I run into problems when I get to the second row. It's driving me crazy! LOL, I can crochet and knit both, I am determined to do this eventually. How can it be so difficult... ack.
It is tricky, but once you get it, you'll be flying through projects!
How do you make the heel of a sock? Can you please make a video, it would be very much appreciated.
It is already on the list of future videos, so stay tuned! 🙂
@@YlvaTheRed i definitely will and i just subscribed.
@@wadetodd3633 Thanks 😊
I wish there were more example of doing the increase. You started it but didn't show what it looks like
Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to include better angles in future
So your making a chain mail pattern but with yarn?
It's very similar, indeed!
wish we could add pics, made a simple yule sock at work because with these snow storms business has been slow. thank yoU!
I'd still love to see it! Maybe you could message a picture through my fb page?
@@YlvaTheRed I will try! still learning this computer stuff lol
You'll get there!
I have a deformity in my off hand from when I broke my hand as a teen (decades ago). The deformity is slight, but it makes it nearly impossible for me to keep the slipknot loop on my thumb, and I can't keep a grip on the tail end.
Would you be able to do a video on using a stick or something else like a "false thumb" to get this initial ring of stitches made?
That's such a fantastic suggestion, thank you for sharing you experiencewith me. I can't promise anything in the immediate future, but I will most certainly put some thought into how this could be worked on!
@@YlvaTheRed Thank you! I am just getting started, and your beginners' videos parts 1 & 2, showing how to work off-thumb, have been very helpful. I'm now trying to think through how to make a thumb substitute so I can learn working from a closed end. Initial thoughts are along the lines of a dowel with a rounded end and a collar to keep the thumb loop from sliding too low, and maybe a notch to hold the tail end. This is just the start of an idea, however; I'm sure there are more details to figure out to make it work. If you or anyone you know can figure something out I would greatly appreciate seeing it!
Would something like one of the old style wooden pegs make a near enough substitution do you think?
@@YlvaTheRed Is there a particular peg type you have in mind, or just a standard wooden peg like a coat peg? Something like that should work, I think, especially with a notch or tape to secure the tail. Do they already make a peg with this in mind?
Without wanting to endorse a company like Amazon, I was thinking something in this vein:
www.amazon.com.au/Bonza-Wooden-Pieces-Natural-BPPEG110NAT48/dp/B0B5H55P6R/ref=asc_df_B0B5H55P6R/?tag=googleshopmob-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=552875349491&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15199382368118096116&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9112806&hvtargid=pla-1930141283037&psc=1
How do you decide how big or small to make the loops? Does it just depend on yarn weight?
For me, I primarily make my loops only big enough that my needle passes easily through the loop. I am not a fan of excessively loose stitches when working with York stitch, however, in some more involved stitches the loops do need to be larger when first made.
I cannot seem to put the stitches onto the slip knot the correct way. 🤦♀️ I’ve been jumping around from tutorial to tutorial and this one has been most helpful. I will continue with my attempts but i cannot say if I shall ever get it right. Ive even slowed the video right down.
I'm glad that this has been of some use to you! If you want to jump over to Facebook and message me there, I might be able to walk you through some troubleshooting steps, because we'll be able to share pictures and video directly ☺
Ylva The Red I gave it one last go before bed last night. I realized that when I would go to make my third loop onwards, I was taking the previous loops onto my needle the wrong way. You are so kind o offer that kind of help. Many blessings! You are a favourite channel of mine now. ❤️
@@selene5100 good work identifying the trouble! I hope you find my other videos enjoyable! ☺
hi, can i ask you what can be achieved with this wool hoop? I work with the Nålebinding method or rather I know how to make gloves, headphones, bags, but this circle of wool? what can be achieved? thank you very much ☺️
Hi Deborah, this method of starting from a closed end is used in making socks, hats, bags and a number of other things. What shape it takes will depend on how many stitches you start with in the first round, and how you increase stitches thereafter. Feel free to check out some of my other videos where I discuss why I work the way I do with nalbinding 🙂
@@YlvaTheRed thanks for your answer, I had never tried this method, you were kind ☺️
Im watching tonight cuz i cant sleep. Im going to try this tomorrow. I just got my needle in the mail. What country do they think first invented this, do u know?
Oh dear, that sucks that you can't sleep, but I'm so excited for you that you'll be getting started with this great craft! If you want to learn more about the history of nalbinding, I have a video all about it :)
How do I find 3rd video
The video you're on is the third in the series, but you can find all my tutorial in my Tutorials play list on my channel 🙂
The showing the face club
It's still something I'm adjusting to!
l wish l could understand as easily as the rest of the commenters.
I'm sorry my video wasn't as helpful for you, but there are a number of excellent nalbinders online who may have a video that helps it click for you!
Yeah, l've (at least tried) to watch those too. But what l find difficult is that even if l have young eyes, l have difficulties to see or understand how stitches go after closing a circle. Thread is either too small or because l am a man, who has no previous experience of knitting. Today l bought 5 mm thick yarn, maybe it will help a bit...
Edit: yep, this 5mm is much better for practice purposes.
This is too hard... I give up
Oh no! Please don't give up! What about it is troubling you?
