Wow, those appear to be Black Locust trees @ 5:48 in the video in the Macarthur Park shot, I had no idea they grew in California! The flowers of the Black Locust tree provide some wonderful nectar forage for honeybees and make delicious honey, in our neck of the woods in VA, it's one of the most welcomed blooms in the spring for the bees! Great videos my friend!!!

    Cool story!
I remember my Folks getting tickets for Maynard when you guys were in town, and sat with your Folks. (and Kathy?)
I didn't go, was up north or something, and my Dad talked about that for the longest time. Trumpet was his main instrument, even though he played them all being a band director.
    Like Hasspacher was to drums.
    Keep rockin'!

Awesome video! As a college student in our school of music, I had the great pleasure of meeting you backstage at a Maynard Ferguson concert in Bowling Green Ohio. I even warmed up with you in one of our practice rooms. Maynard was awesome that night as usual. Great experience I'll never forget!😎👍

Hey Greg, we met at Namm about a decade ago. Of course you shouldn't remember that. But my son and I will never forget! You could not have been nicer to my son and his best friend. Those two will never forget you! He's out on the road right now. Killing it with his band SPY. He's the bass player in the band and really puts it out there. His study of drums and my lifelong passion of drums really set him up to be that great bass player, you always want to your left. I know you and your brother have been able to play in a lot of projects and what a gift! I get a lot out of your videos. I just watched the interview with Beato where you go through the grooves every drummer should know. That is fantastic stuff being a 60-year-old dude myself that explanation of rock and roll completely changed my view of that song from a drummer's perspective. I learned something new every time I watch you and I wish you the best of luck with the channel. Peace, brother!

What. A. Story! I was introduced to Maynard Ferguson in band class as a high school freshman (I think trombone was my parents' plan for keeping me out of trouble), and instantly hooked. Fast forward a couple years, and I have the good fortune to be selected for a spot in "all county jazz band" in Pinellas County FL. One of our big numbers was... Coconut Champagne - the Maynard version! I was so very stoked just to get to play it. I remember that we played it at the all-county music expo in Bayfront Center Arena in St. Petersburg. Such a cool experience. Wow, I haven't thought of that in a LONG time. (I need to go dig out my Maynard albums now)

Maynard's band played my high school auditorium in 1976. St. Helena, Ca. Honestly, the music was a little over my head at the time, but I sure was impressed by the musicianship of the band. So memorable!

That album changed my drumming life. It covers so many styles. It’s a desert island record for me. In 1985, my junior college jazz band played Fire Shaker, and Coconut Champagne. That led me to go seek out that album so I could hear how those songs should really be played. That’s when I discovered Greg Bissonette! I’ve been a fan ever since.

It was Spyro Gyra at the St Petersburg pier a yr before then YOU……. I was hooked on Jazz and drumming ……. It’s so odd to hear you talk about Maynard this was 1985 time frame…… you are one of my favorites brother!!!!

During my first year of high school marching band camp (drumline) the upper classmen played Coconut Champaign on repeat. This was my first foray into the world of jazz. Prior to that I was all metal and inspired by the cool Pearl drum ad with you touring with the DLR band (standing on the kit twirling sticks). Live From SF was a huge game changer for me and became my path to new genres. During my senior year we played Coconut and I did my best Bissonette imitation, which was pretty awful but I had fun. By the way, an old friend recently sold me his old kit for $100 and I'm playing again, working on the Songo groove from Private Lesson. Thanks for a lifetime of inspiration, Gregg!

Greg this is so great! I've got to say in the fall of 83 1st year of college me and 4 other drummers were like we're going to hear Maynard Ferguson play Chippewa Falls Wisconsin. Gregg Bisonnette!! We were so excited because this Gregg guy played this really cool 6 stroke fill on A Train on a recent Mayard album. So the band comes out and no Gregg. We were all bummed, but Ray Brinker really killed that night it was fun talking with him. He said he left his body a couple of times during that set. Lol! We all wanted to be you and were following you and the next move on with Roth. My buddy Steve Wiest. We have done clinics together and some nice playing. He told me once, "play that cymbal ALL night. Mel Lewis man." The cymbal.....a 1981 20" Swish. Still playing that!
    Subbed!

Gregg, it's fantastic to hear all these stories about how inclusive Maynard and his band members were. I love the positivity and the non-competitiveness, everyone just wanted to enjoy making good music together. I'm sure it was an amazing environment for developing great musical talent and great humans. (Sadly, not all of my musicals experiences have been positive because they were lacking these qualities.)

Wow - what a great fill at @11:48 of Coconut Champaign - you make it look so effortless!! My first arena concert was that Journey Tour (Frontiers) referenced @4:33, with Bryan Adams opening up at the Frank Irwin Center - Austin, Texas. It was a life changer! My little 5-piece Rogers drum kit with Camber cymbals looked and sounded nothing like Steve's massive Sonor kit with Zildjian K's, but I hiked up the toms & set it up as close to his as I could!!

This was me also. I had to special order Maynard Ferguson and Brandon from The Warehouse back in 1988ish.

@@MikeB-oo9bj lol That drum break from Aggressive Tranquility was THE very first item I used for a non-voice answering machine greeting back in the day, when that was all the rage! Absolutely love that break, and have used variations of that numerous times in my own playing. Let me also add I kept checking out all the music stores in my area (greater DC) and only found The Other Side on cassette initially. Didn't think about special ordering, but was overjoyed when I found it on CD at Tower Records, I believe. Same for Maynard's CD..

@@BrianH020 I think I had Ladies Night in Buffalo on my answering machine.
But from Bullfunk I have stolen Greggs snare hit, followed by 6 bass drum hits, pause and ending on the snare too many times to count over the years. That album is a Top 10 desert island situation album for me.
I have seen Gregg a number of times playing with Brandon and Garfield over the last 30+ years.
I sent Gregg and audio clip of Brandon doing Bullunk at The Baked Potato in L.A. w/Vinnie Colaiuta on drums.
