"You throw enough money at it, eventually you start winning". And that´s why GT is the most realistic motorsport game ever made.
Hahah
Can't argue that point!
and now the same thing can be said with gran turismo 7 only it’s real money!
Lmao 🤣
@@shaungreer3350 That only makes it even more realistic 🤣
I'll say this for the Gran Turismo license tests: I completely sucked at racing games until I got through those, but now I can play them competently. Those tests even helped me drive better in real life - less because the physics were true-to-life, and more because all the principles they teach are sound. Individual tire grip, weight transfer, clean lines, etc. Unforgiving as they were, those license tests did more for my understanding of driving cars than actual driver's ed did.
I for one certainly learned what corner apexes and optimal driving lines were.
no other racing game at the time taught you about out-in-out cornering, and why it matters.
This sums up my experience as well. I'm not much of a gamer, but I'm fairly competent and competitive in racing games, and I owe it primarily to doing those license tests over and over back when I was 13.
I can confirm this is true. I learned to drive way before touching a real car Because of gran tourismo licenses.
GT taught me how to avoid self-inflicted car accidents... well maybe. I haven't had a car accident yet in the meatspace in over 16 years of driving.
The dealership music and the button sounds... Pure nostalgia. Love GT!
That menu music and really all the music was all rock and electronic themed outside of JP which was still likely Kazunori's choice (being the Director and Producer), but those choices worked out very well in the US and in the EU as well.
Despite liking rock music only the tracks that made it into the game from each respective artist really resonated with me (then and now). I still listen to those tracks, the licensed ones but every time I do, I think about GT... I still have my OG copy which wasn't even purchased for me. My parents picked it up for themselves but they never really played it and they eventually relinquished ownership of Gran Turismo (1998) to me though my mother still has the second game in her cabinet it was purchased by my father, but he doesn't play it either.
Kind of how I got into some other games on PS was from games my parents rarely picked up for themselves like Air Combat, Star Wars: Dark Forces and Tiny Tank (the latter in that list was not a kids game, but I was allowed to watch).
The dealership layout was awesome, and it's garbage they don't do that today. Also used car inventory that changed, cars with mileage that would affect sale value and performance, these early GT's were awesome. The RPG racing sim was amazing, then the idiots thought no one wanted that RPG leveling up stuff, nah, they just want mindless online competitive racing. Morons.
The fact that they were able to pull off a game with these physics and this amount of realism in the mid 90's is absolutely incredible.
I can't even estimate the number of hours me and my friends put into this game. Taking our memory cards to each other's houses and racing our own unique cars against each other. Then GT2 came out and blew our minds again.
These games came out when I was in middle school and taught me a lot about cars, racing, physics and tuning.
Honestly, even as someone who grew up with GT3 for the PS2, both Gran Turismo titles on the Playstation 1 were still very enjoyable when I played them last year. A true testament to the talent and passion of the small dev team back then, being able to create something that endures the test of time even two decades later.
Honestly? Were you dishonest before?
Hey Dustin nice to see you here 😀
The physics in this game blew my mind in 1998.
Graphics is also great for a ps1 1998 game
Yup. This was the first driving game that made my jaw hit the floor. All the previous "racing" games were kiddie toys. This was the first one that felt "real" to me.
I have one of the best childhood memories with Gran Turismo. Me and my friend were obsessed with this game. I often took my console to his house because of the bigger TV he had and we spent hours tuning and customizing our cars. Good times!
I did exactly the same. I remember us playing it all night and we would take notes of the 0-400m and 0-1000m times of the fastest cars, tinkering with gear ratios, camber, suspension stiffness etc.
I remember having a sleep over with my two friends and we just played GT1 and read car and video game magazines all night.
It sounds like you had a gay ol' time.
Sitting in class together making the engine rev sounds to one another indicating that we where up for playing after school. Such fun.
@@thelunchbox420x Go play on the highway, kid.
I just love that they didn’t change the menu sounds especially the countdown before a race starts. It’s just too nostalgic when I play GT Sport.
Remember my teacher had this when i was at primary school and bought it in with his steering wheel and projector one day! It was amazing!
I think the important thing to remember when considering the quirks of the license tests and even he quirks outside of the license tests is that Kaz was also very heavily influenced by the TV magazine Best Motoring, a kind of Japanese Top Gear. There’s an official Best Motoring Chanel on YT and if you go and watch some of the 90’s uploads all will become immediately clear, as the way they used to evaluate cars from small Kei cars to firebreathing supercars all included these kinds of trials. And once you watch the track battle you’ll basically realise the whole game just reacreates the world of the TV show. And I love it even more for it!
This is the first time I've ever heard of a game where you literally had to unlock the framerate
60 fps wasn't really mainstream at all in video games in 97.
@@nicolascorre6830
Maybe for 3D polygon based games it wasn't, but a huge majority of 2D games in the previous generation ran at 60fps.
you didn't, it was just a bonus mode, the graphics detail had to be lowered massively for it to run at 60 FPS.
@@Kuson2 I know. I was more making a joke about framerate unlocking
@@LarryLopez91 60fps but for a sprite animation rate divided by 2, 3 or even 4. The hifi mode in GT was a big step forward on consoles' hardware.
This game introduced me to the Nissan Skyline GTR. It also taught me real life car physics and made me a better driver.
Thier strategy guides are on point for real life driving lol
_THE REAL DRIVING SIMULATOR_
The computer that's inside the R34 is designed by the same company that put this game out
@@michaelhowell2809 I was surprised at how technical the official guides are. They really go deep into it lol.
@@Housesider I remember it tells you to set up cones to practice cornering and I was confused as to how to do it in the actual game lol
A 60fps that you had to unlock is such a weird and great bit of trivia
I think it was a secret because it would only work in less detailed versions of a few tracks, instead of letting you pick from every track available in the main game.
The compromises that had to be done to make it work at 60fps were probably too much for a whole game.
@@MateusAuri if i remember it was only special stage route 4 or 5 or even 9 (ik they were 3 SS races in GT1).
@@V1VISECT6 clubman stage route 5, special stage route 5 and 11.
@@nicolascorre6830 and even those were modified to show less detail by either removing objects or shorthening the draw distance, I can't remember which one. also having only one car in the race (you), frees the CPU resources more
@@YszapHun yes, removing objects, light effects like flares and opponents. Every car in the arcade mode was available. And I'm pretty sure it was in 60 fps plus double resolution.
I remember my brother playing this and then later me. To this day I remember the Dodge Viper GTS being an absolute beast, especially in the Normal car cup.
i stopet playing gt series after in one of games they introduced penality for kicking other cars and other shits
This took my love for cars, as a 9 year old, to another level when it was released. I was obsessed with the NSX and RX7 throughout my teen years. I really wanted one when I turned 18 but I couldn't afford either so I bought a 06 RSX Type S and it was just as awesome to me. That RSX is still in my driveway after 15 years because it reminds me how much I was into the NSX and RX7 because of GT lol
The start and break test is one of the best lessons this tests teach, englobed in it is: visual sign to breaking points, acceleration from 0 and breaking. You need to keep track of distance in signs teaching you to search for breaking points on other track's, controlling starting acceleration to avoid loosing grip.
Wasn’t expecting this video but definitely not complaining, cant wait to see whats next!
That's such a generic comment
@@andrewcz4346 ok
@@andrewcz4346 That's such a generic name.
@@HunterAtheist coming from you i searched Hunter Green on youtube and i saw like 100 other people with the same name, then i searched for toxicandrewcz and nobody else has that name
@@andrewcz4346 Maybe because Hunter Green is their real name.
I still go back to it every couple of years. I'm 36 now and this game still fills me with pure nostalgia.
The first time I played this game I thought video game technology had peaked. It was so realistic I couldn't imagine a game having better graphics.
I've never played this specific gran turismo but gran turismo 3 introduced me to the beautiful "ASTON MARTIN"
Great re-review! Part of why the AI are a lot harder is also because they run upgraded cars in other championships, even the Sunday Cup has upgraded AI, which you fail to mention in the review, on top of the rubber banding.
Was just about to comment the same thing! I remember I had to check the entry list every time before I raced and if any of the AI cars was too powerful I loaded the race again. :D
The first time I realized they're upgraded is when I saw Mazda Demio in Sunday Cup had 170hp. A stock Demio would only have 94hp.
@@gamtax In the Sunday Cup, it runs 144hp. In the Lightweight Cup, it runs 177hp.
If I only had $1 for every hour I spent on all of these 1-4. What amazing times. I'll never forget the first time as a kid I completed an endurance race. This re-review really takes me back. Thanks for this!
Mitsubishi 3000 was my favorite car!! This game shaped my childhood. I remember getting my first car that happened to be a stick shift! With no training other than this game mechanics, i got the clutch down by the time i got home! Some things just change your life. This is one of those things for me!
And the license thing was new and welcomed! Not like most people had an idea how to actually race a car! Learning to look for the apex and just something easy as practicing molded a habit that i still have today! Thank you for teaching me to race!
Absolute masterpiece. Wish they did a Hd remake. Having fast menus allowed you to jump in and play quickly. New games too cumbersome in that regard. The original actually came with insert in the case written by skip barber explaining basic racing physics. Such a wonderful experience. Thank you to everyone involved in that project.
I just wish I still had my old PS1 :(
Play that on Pc with an emulator. It'll be like an HD remake
The Flatout series deserves a review
yes!
@@KotatkoVonDrapek lol kámo nečekal jsem na tomhle kanále dalšího čecha xD
Yup
@Alexander TM-290 same
I always remember when I was around 6 years old and wouldn't give this game a chance because I thought it was about tourism lmao
One day I decided to play it anyway, and man, it definetly changed the way I saw racing games
Great video, i am 35 and was a young boy when this game came out, this game absolutely got me into racing. I couldn't get enough of it. Looks pixelated today but i assure you back then it was amazing the graphics and the way the cars had body roll.
Keep up the good work love your stuff
I remember when GT2 came out, reviews say the graphics evolved from perfect to perfect.
The day I loaded this game for the first time and started playing was when I officially became a gamer. The addiction factor to buying new cars that behaved like the real thing and upgrading them was absolutely genius and I couldn't believe what I was playing.
I miss the vacuum they used to record the car sounds.
Get the new golf or new toyota gr yaris and you’ll be in for a treat
I spent 100s of hours playing this game in the 90s it was the greatest game ever made at that point of time
Gran Turismo was recommended to me by a game store employee when I was 7, i had never seen any news of it. It was significantly harder than than any game I’d ever played before, and caught the attention of my entire family.
Oh, that riff at 7:11 cut to my soul
I was hoping for a re-review of the GT franchise for so long! Great video, as always
TVR Cerbera remains my favourite car from any game. An absolute beast
GT 1 will always have a place in my heart.I grew up with games like stunts which was a dos game wacky wheels nfs 1 test drive 1 etc etc. When i first got gt 1 was like 15 years old and it change my way of playing car games. It also introduced me to the skyline which are my all time favorite(T R32)I didnt mind the grinding. That is the reason i uninstalled forza horizon 4 because you get fast cars without putting any work in it.I have original gt from 1-4(never got a ps3 or 4 nor would i ever get one)I play gt 4 on pc with emulator and i love it so far.Never got around to finish 3 and 4 so taking some time to do so.
Damn, the timing of this video. I just went back to this game two days ago.
Lol I learned how to drive using Gran Turismo. People tell me that I drive very well and smoothly
This game not only got me into cars, it also helped shape my taste in music. Since GT1, Feeder is still my favourite rock band, and will always be. And the original soundtrack was just as good as the licensed one!
This game meant so much to me. It led to my love of the series overall, and by the time I played GT3 A-Spec, I knew that the first car I would fully finance on my own would be a Subaru WRX.
But it all started here. This game, more than anything else in my life, taught me to love the art of driving, and that no car was just a car but a machine with a distinctive personality.
this game is where i first learned that the skyline gtr existed.
This videogame has shaped me in so many ways… i already loved cars before it but when i played this and gt2 my relationship with cars… it is just part of my life
I never owned the full game but I played the hell outta this game on my demo discs.....jampack and underground
Me too, I was really bad at it
Starting Gran Turismo 3, "Pressure Sensitivity" was used, allowing you to press the X button harder to go faster.
Learn something every day they said did not know this alway played it with the Logitech steering wheel never used a controller
So many great memories with both gt2 and gt3 awesome game
I have to say, the portion about the art style, music, and menus was spot on. This was one of the first games I really got into as a kid and the US cover, and dealer music has stayed with me to this day.
Did we ever figure out whats under the car cover?
Even Yamauchi can’t remember what car is it.
It should be noted that Gran Turismo didn't look how it is presented here. We had CRT tv sets that smoothed the image slightly. Most of us played on 14" sets explaining very large icons. Colour bleed and such were all factors in development. We didn't have hi-res pixel perfect displays back then. Just an observation not a critique. Great video.
Nice review, bro, Gran Turismo 1 was undoubtedly one of the most important racing games on the PSone despite it's sequels outclassing it.
It’s funny how the graphics got better by the end of the video. It’s like my brain started filling in the lack of pixels. Thanks for the video. I have a lot of memories playing these games with my Dad.
This game was incredible when it first came out. There was nothing like it. It looks very dated today, but it was absolutely boss back in the day.
I still have my original copy of the game, the trust and creative freedom they gave to the team and the dedication they had really helped this game become one of the big hits of the PlayStation, and definitely influcenced the PlayStation's popularity and reputation.
*Yes !!!!* 🎉🎈
Thank you for making this video!
My favorite game ever made.
I'm kinda surprised at their shock when it sold so many copies... it was basically the iPhone of the simulation racing genre - they existed, but nothing in this kind of polish before.
Not sure how nostalgia is talking, but there's something about those ps1 graphics that hit home for me
Great review! I recently backed up my old Memory Cards. Can't wait to race my beloved Mitsubishi FTO again ❤️
Another game that I play back in the day is, Jarret and Labonte stock car racing, it's awesome
Aka ToCa World Touring Cars, its real name. I love that game, though it felt a bit less polished than ToCa 2 in terms of gameplay and sounds. The cheats are what made it infinitely replayable for random fun haha
People don't understand how ahead of it's time this game was. It was like someone from 10 years in the future had come to deliver their version of what a racing game should be, making every other game of the time feel like a quick demo.
The first Gran Turismo has a special place in my heart. It was the first true racing game that I owned as a kid.
I still remember the feeling from beating the harder challenges. It was great!
This game pioneered the evolution of the sim-racing genre to what we have today. Every sim-racer that came after GT followed the succesful formula.
PS: The best starter car had to be the black MA70 Supra 3.0 Turbo. It would cost you 6700 credits, and it didn't take much to get it where you needed it to be for winning every championship (that it could enter). The base model with an upgraded exhaust was all you needed for the Sunday Cup. After that, you'd put on a stage 2 turbo, some slick tires, and lightened it as much as possible (on that budget). That made it superior to the cars in the Clubman Cup. Further upgrades made it on par or better than the cars in the GT cup, and fully upgraded, it could take on the Megaspeed cup, as well as the Japan vs. US (or UK). Top speed (fully upgraded) was around 350+ km/h
Though, the best strategy was to run the Sunday cup twice, sell the prize cars and buy a Viper. Then you'd enter the Normal Car Championship
It’s amazing how after so many years this games music is still memorable and it’s approaching a quarter of a century old soon. A true racing classic game
I remember playing the shit out of this game! Me loving this game is a understatement. At that time I was in love with cars and still to this day. Finding out non-USA cars are unicorns to me. Still to this day.
92 gto twin turbo and mitsubishi eclipse were my two favourite cars to fully modify. The physics were so crazy in this game for its time
I remember buying this when it came out when I was a kid. I read the driving manual cover to cover, did every race and got gold on all license tests. I shared my memory card at school so other could see the GT40 (unlocked with gold licenses) and see my achievement. I learned so much about cars and driving as a young kid through this game. Now I'm playing GT7 on the PS5 and it feels like nothing has changed.
menu and dealership music was so cool and charming in this game! BTW I can see you didnt know about the GTO twin turbo ( not the LM version) wich was the strongest car in the game :D
This is the game that cemented I'm not a simulation car guy.
Like many I played in a friend house and not even him knew how to get to the license race.
No not win the race, we couldn't get to start the test drive. Never looked back.
Gran Turismo was my first Playstation game and I regret nothing
GT came out when I was 15. I had friends camped out at my house for a week trying to pimp out our 3000GT. It was like a racing rpg. It was also the first racing game I remember having to use the brakes
11:10 There is no damage, because the car companies didn't allowed it. It was to protect the Image of the manufacturer and promoting their product ideally in this "new digital media".
Wow seeing Motor Toon Gran Prix literally unlocked memories I forgot I had. I can't believe it! Gran Turismo & everything in this video was significant in my childhood but i couldn't remember it haha
I played Gran Turismo 1 and 2 on my old Playstation back in the 90s. Gran Turismo was way ahead of all other car racing games, you could set up your cars parameter perfectly back then. It was a lot of fun to configure your cars and save it to the memory card and race against your friends with their cars. I had all the licenses and all the achievements (100 Round Tracks or 1 Hour Driving etc...). Does anyone remember the Suzuki Escudo Monster ? :)
My brother and I would do those 4 hour+ endurance races all weekend sometimes. Those were almost psychedelic in nature. You'd drive tsukuba perfectly for hours at a time and not even remember it. My brother and I also got into amateur racing in our teen years and I credit Gran Turismo for our early podium finishes. Being able to see the ideal racing line at the subconscious level was a great help. Even up to today my brother and I cannot be in two motor vehicles of any type at the same time without racing fiercely, despite the catalog of contusions, broken bones, and legal penalties we've accrued from doing so. Last time it was 4x4 pick up trucks with studs on a snowmobile ice race course situated on a frozen lake. I assert that I won because I was able to keep my truck out of the snowberm the longest.
Thank you for the memories! Me and my grandmother played this when I was so young :)
Your voice sounds like it belongs in a racing game tutorial
"Alright kid, let's see whatchu got! Drive to that start line so we can get started"
I bought this game off of my friend back in middle school in 2006. I paid $20 for Gran Turismo, GT two, spyro and a PS1 memory card. Probably the best $20 I ever spent. I never completed the Gran Turismo games but man did I have fun. Also taught me a lot about driving and cornering and stuff without even realizing it.
the yellow evo was my go to for this game, it was grippy AF
I'm a weirdo because I play the entire series using the retro style racing controls of X for acceleration and O for braking. I've tried using the shoulder buttons or analog sticks for these several times and it just feels awkward to me. So glad that the series always lets players customize controls however they want.
I always used the R3 right analog stick to brake and accelerate, and r1 as handbrake. I appreciated the extra control of the analogue but R2 was just another button on those days. I still try to emulate that setup on every racing game I play now
I've got many fond memories of GT1. My first car was always the Supra MK3, getting the A license was a real pain in the ass, but when you did; it's were the money was made with a stock Viper. Watching my little brother have full-blown tantrums because I wouldn't let him win. And lastly, my parents were cheap AF back then, begging them to get me a memory card was like asking them if I could drive dads Z28. I was like 9-10 years old when this masterpiece came out. Oh, and getting the MK4 Supra or the GTO over 1000hp, that was awesome :)
Gran Turismo 1 is and will always be THE Legendary PS1 Game we all enjoyed playing.
I can explain why I believe that GT is the way it is with the racing you mentioned. When you start out you have to put your time in (which is learning the car for getting license, then moving up in license after demonstrating that you possess the ability to pass their requirements). Then, when you get a car, it is perceived that the chances of a new racer driving a new vehicle and being successful of the bat is virtually impossible. So, then you have to learn the car and how to reach its limit. Once by tuning the vehicle based on how you drive and what you need to adjust for it to perform properly, you can then have a chance at winning podium. Only if you are able to keep the car on track consistently enough to be able to maintain your position. You don't have to grow up with this game to understand and enjoy it, you only have to undestand what it's running on, system spec wise. And that when compared to all other racing games in the PSX library, that it is easily the racing game of choice for ps1 players, even today.
I can remember spending so many hours on this game back in 97 as a teenager. Was a stunning game for its time.
I remember on GT2 having one of my cars all suped up, I won every race against the computer, thought I was a badass. Friend came over with his memory card and loaded up his car, completely wrecked my ass. I couldn't even come close. He used the two sticks somehow, I think he was using the right stick for brake and gas, or maybe gear shift? But I recall he didn't use any of the buttons and I was mind-blown.
the clubman stages, i just realized now that 10 year old me back then was experiencing a first true 60 fps gameplay on a PS1 which i thought also way back that them stages felt weird. mind blown.
I remember starting playing it as a kid I could not control the RWD cars, and then returning after few years to completely ace the game, with Cerbera LM Edition being my fav car.
The MKIV Supra in GT1 was near impossible to race with when fully modded to 800hp. The 3000GT/GTO VR4 with 1000hp and its AWD on the other hand, was unstoppable and the best car in the game. It made me want one in real life.
I had never noticed this before, but the first Gran Turismo has the best upgrade system. I understand why they had to simplify the upgrades in later titles, but the simple fact that I can buy sway bar upgrades separately from a full on "Race Suspension" set-up is legit. I know it's trivial, but it's those small little details that make the game special. Maybe GT7 will bring them back?
How i loved gt 1 and 2... I was a child who loved cars but through gt i became a real car enthusiast but also understanding racing in general and how it works.i remember the first time i drove over 300 kmh in a dodge viper and I was so happy about it. My favorite car was always the Mitsubishi gto lm edition. This car was a blast to drive. i still love the Mitsubishi gto lm edition. Gt 1 and 2 and destruction derby 2 where my main racing games back then. And through those awesome racing games i always wanted to be a race driver (still do but I'm to old now)
Man those games back then are and where golden. I still wanna see the Mitsubishi gto lm edition in Gt 7.
Unfortunately i didn't had a ps 2 for gt 3 but my brother had one back then and when he went to work I secretly played Gt 3 on his ps 2.
Such good old times... But now I play Gt 3 on my Phone with an Emulator. I definitely missed Gt 3 and 4.
This game is what got me into JDM cars, and cars in general
For those of us that set our goals on all gold licenses it was a great challenge (though I haven't played since the PS3).
Ah, the TVR Cerbera LM Edition, truly the pinnacle of the games vehicles. With the right suspension setup, it was crazy fast.
I really miss the garage aspects for GT2. Buying a JDM car, doing it up, winning races, getting licenses, getting money, doing it up.
Early NFS games were great at that too. Nitto 1320 as well (RIP).
There isn't a single modern RPG race title that is worth playing now
When I was a kid I traded my N64 for my friend's PS1 for a few weeks and got to play gran turismo 1. Instantly fell in love with it. The supra was my first or second car.
Received a copy of this before it was launched in the UK. My mate said he had a few Japanese games so would translate as much as he could. Played the entire game having to guess the requirements for the tests because he could translate nothing, now that was tricky.
I swear Gran Tursmo taught me how to drive and parallel park. Lol. That’s where I practiced all of it before taking my driving test.
It's worth noting that this was a May 1998 release for everyone outside Japan.
I remember when I discovered GT on the PS1. I was blown away. An incredible feat back in the day
I have so much nostalgia for this game and series that over the past year and a half, I've been streaming them. I'm currently running through GT3
old games look a lot better when you play them with scanlines on, or on a CRT directly. The devs develop the games with these lines in mind, that's also why you often have fond memories of the games looking very good. this re-review was definitely emulated and very well made, but add some scan lines to make it look 100x better!
Great video. Thank you for great memories. Still have 1 and 2.
First video game I ever played as a very young kid, and probably what got me into cars, and subsequently the basis for my whole life.
The music is such a nostalgia shock. Our PS1 is broken but I just might have to try fix it and find a copy to experience it again.
Considering this is 1998 the graphics look incredible!
*1997
was 16years old when the game came out. this was so much fun to play with friends .
the ps1 was also great for playing music cd's. and still is
Everybody remembers fearing the A.I. Corvette Stingray in Arcade Mode.
The best Gran Turismo review video I have ever seen
