From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Varenne (foaled in Copparo, Italy, 19 May 1995) is a dark bay racing trotter by Waikiki Beach out of Ialmaz by Zebu. Varenne is considered to be the best trotter of all time. No other trotter has won so many of the most important races in the world and set as many records as Varenne
Varenne was the sire of Southwind Serena who also won the Breeders. Southwind Serena was also the dam of world champion "the freak of nature" Mission Brief and dam to Cyberspace who should hit the track this summer as a two year filly trotter. Will lightening strike twice with Cyberspace? Walner - Southwind Serena
For the record books Varenne sired Southwind Serena who was the dam of world champion "the freak of nature" Mission Brief. Mission Brief's 1:50.3 as a two year old at the Red Mile 8 years ago could stand the test of time.
You forgot Greyhound who trotted at the Red Mile in 1938 in 155 1/4, a record that stood until 1969, and was a faster mark at the time then the pacing mark.
Fast forward to 2014 and no trotter has ever shown the speed Mission Brief showed as a two year old. The 1:50.3 was only one tick off the 2 year old filly pacer record at the Red Mile both set in the same year 2014. The dam of Mission Brief was sired by Varenne.
Just to make it clear. There are only two horses in trotting history that could call themselves the best of all times: Varenne vs The Last Emperor Ourasi. The others are all great but the performence througout their history says they are the best.
European and american harness racing is so different in racing styles. Varenne was a monster on both soils. Ready Cash another monster. Europes finest to name 2. US. had Mack Lobell, Moni Maker(could they of picked a better name for this horse), although Muscle Hill was undefeated, i would of liked to see one more year from him. Too hard to seperate these great trotters to name a few. Lets remember Moni Maker was a filly compared to Varenne. Those two are the best i believe. Mr. Italiano is bias obviously too europeans and understood. Us on the other hand has the best pacer hands down EVER!!!!!!! Enjoy him this year for his 10 year old campaign. Thats right 10 years old and winning a million a year... No more introduction needed for the great FOILED AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I think we in Europe has come to an understanding that our horses are simply better than yours. This is based on the horses we have "sent over" and the horses you have sent over here. World records has been set way to often even to take American trotting seriously. Lasix is widely used, and horses gets burned out after 2+3 year seasons due to overpace in most races. Googoo Gaagaa etc. I have to agree that Muscle Hill was something great, and I really love the horse. That he didnt continue to race after his 3 year season was a big loss for American trotting, and he could eventually become the next American horse to win the Elitlopp and Prix d´Amerique. But don't start to compare horses like Varenne with horses who has won all his 3 year races. Varenne ran on the outside of Victory Tilly and beat him in the Elitlopp. He ran 3 wide in Olympiatravet and beat General du Pommeau. Horses that had 60-70% win rate. The only one that has done something like that is Ourasi, who took down your great Mack Lobell from outside. The history speaks for itself!
jbarbani23 Your forgetting a bunch,Vareene in top 5.. if I recall Moni Maker, great filly no doubt, but many many stronger, I could go on and on..Greyhound (155 mile)Super Bowl, Delmonica Hanover, Nevele Pride, and Even Mystic Park. (Mack Lobell's dad)..The French had (my vote)..Ourasi, Lutin d'signy, Roquepine, etc and Aussies had -Maori's Idol..who ran against pacers because no trotter could beat him!!
Dan Patch deserves mention: raced 10 years and undefeated. Broke 14 world records; his record mile 1:55 in 1906 stood 54 years before being bested in 1960. Due respect to the others but Dan Patch was the first truly brilliant trotter.
Era for era Dan Patch was the best ever standardbred or thoroughbred. No one would race against him and he just ran exhibitions. They also made a movie about him. The roots of Jate Lobell go back to Dan Patch.
Muscle Hill and Verenne both hit the 3 quarter pole and exact same time also...Varennes driver was whipping and slashing...And Brian Sears on Muscle Hill looked like he was on a lazyboy watching tv...Now you tell me who was the better horse

Varenne was the sire of Southwind Serena who produced the world champion Mission Brief. Mission Brief's two year word record record of 1:50.3 at the Red Mile could stand for decades.
@MrItaliano1900 Fine, if you want to argue about money made, and races won, then Moni Maker is just as good as varenne, she won $6,000,000, won the Hambletonian Oaks, Breeders Crown, Nat Ray trot, Prix de Amerique, Prix De France, Elittlopp, the Trot Mondial, Gran Premio delle Nazioni, and was horse of the year 3 times, trotter of the year once, and trotting mare of the year once.

Sorry mate, in Italy we used to love Moni Maker, however we all need to recognise that he had no rivals, he’s the best ever! And Moni makers probably best mare ever! Let’s love both horses!
@MrItaliano1900 In my 22 years i've seen thousands of races, i've seen 22 hambletonians, with the greatest trotters on earth, i also watched varennes race at the meadowlands, i didn't find him very impressive, The greatest trotter of all time was Mack Lobell, he won the elitlopp, the hambletonian, the international trot, and he smashed world records, if they had met it would have been Mack by 5 at the line. And i train about 25 head myself, and drive. I think i have just as good an opinion.
Justin, I was going to make that point exactly..But with a caveat, Mack Lobell in his 3 year old season was the best Trotter, EVER in my opinion, the French or Scandinavians might disagree, but no trotter could go a mile as fast as "Mack"..I'm not talking a mile and a half or "metered"long European races .I've seen races since the early 70's as a kid as well. The older Mack was all heart known to have hoof and seasamoid problems and still won and beat great horses, similar to his very fast father Mystic Park, who just wasnt as game as his son was. The March of Dimes trot, he was not at his best, as his feet always stinging, but My opion, no better field ever assembled for a race, and Varenne who was a monster might not have been as good as Ourasi..
OMG!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? There is no one trotter thats the best ever. There are several that you could make an argument are. Here is just a few in no paticular order off the top of my head. Mack Lobell, Peace Corps,Moni,Maker,Varenne,Muscle Hill, Donato Hanover, Deweycheatemnhow, Speedy Crown, Nevele Pride,Enough Talk,Cash Hall,Sain Pail Super Bowl,Magician,Muscle Massive,Brod Bahn, Manofmanymissions. Give me about 5 more minutes and I could think of 10 more to throw in the discussion.

@MrItaliano1900 If you could read, you would see that Mack Lobell, would have beaten varenne on an american track, Mack's mark was .1 second faster than varennes, and Mack Lobell was around 20 years before Varenne, using a much heavier wooden tie down racebike and heavy leather equipment. Common sense says that varenne would have lost to mack under modern american racing conditions, not your biased "opinion".
Varenne did sire Southwind Serena and Southwind Serena was bred to Muscle Hill to produce Mission Brief. Yes Muscle Hill would have crushed Varenne but gotten beat by Walner.
LoL Driver was really pushing this horse to the wire and he went 1:51.1..Watch the 2009 Hambletonian and you will see the best trotter...It is hard to say Muscle Hill was the best because he was so lightly raced..But the mile he ran in the Hambo was the most impressive miles i have ever seen by a trotter..
@MrItaliano1900 Typical italian ignorance to say that Varenne was the greatest trotter of all time, the greatest trotters to grace this planet were born where harness racing was, america, you shame my italian bloodlines to call yourself Mr.Italiano when you dont even know good harness horses.
Volaaaa varenne....che tempi per l ippica italiana...😢
"Here comes Varenne, the italian Stallion" Epic words.
Varenne was born in the province of Ferrara Italy a few kms away from me. It was an icon for my city at the time

He didn't watch the movie Dan Patch.
