@Kathleen It crushes me that Robert Redford is 82 and there's no John Candy, Harold Ramis, Paul Newman, William F.Buckley, Gore Vidal, Fcking Bowie, and Chevy Chase is 75. Can't deal with icons I grew up with ageing and leaving.
June 20, 1989, Stockholm Sweden. Was 19 years old, had already listened to S&G and Pauls solo albums for 10 years. But of all the great things this concert brought, nothing could beat standing 5 meters away from Paul as he sang The Boxer. With flute, accordion, violin etc also live in the background. This was a sureal experience. I'll never forget it, not in a million years.
I have admired Paul Simon ever since the 1960's when I was a young man. I am now 71; in England; alive; and so is Paul Simon; very much so. Thank God for his music. Magritte? I prefer the music of Simon.
I was fortunate enough to see his farewell concert. What a stunning display of musicianship it was. The ultra- talented musicians he put together to perform on that stage with him was unparalleled in my concert experiences. His devotion to his music and making it fresh and new blew me away. I love Paul Simon. He is a genius. Long may he run, creating music to help make the world a better place!
Paul is 77 here and certainly had some rough years, but has already lived past average for men. His work with Garfunkel is classic and 50 years later still sounds wonderful!
But...that song is perfect. One of my favorites. It needs no fixing. Anyway, my favorite composer of all time. When I was a teen Paul's songs gave me pure pleasure.
The re-recording is actually arguably better in my opinion. He sings it slower and it's more somber. And while I recognize that the doo-wop during the choruses served a purpose to the song's narrative, just the orchestra sounds more fitting to its style.
The new version of “Rene & Georgette” is slightly better than the awesome original, mainly due to the work of YMusic. However the new version of “Darling Lorraine” plods lethargically and is grossly inferior to the original. Oddly I love those moments where I look at one of my heroes and think “What on earth were you thinking?”
@@jan2bratt I agree. How he can put a few words together is great. In one song he stated that all the news he needs he gets from the weather report! Wouldn't it be great to be able to live so care free?
LOL! Paul Simon has not lost his wit! Also, it's refreshing to hear him talk about "fixing mistakes" on his old songs on this new album... It makes me feel better about the fact that I can't stop tweaking my own arrangements, and can never feel like my work on it isn't ever "done".
Paul is a treasure of humanity. It pleases me and I'm sure many others to be alive at the same time as Paul. An extremely rare person essential to life... like our SUN in the universe.

@@RobVespa Call it "top 3", because arguments can be made for Dylan, Springsteen and Simon but I don't see anyone else with the same consistency. Dylan I love, but he was always more of a lyricist rather than a songwriter. Springsteen I love as well, but I would consider him less artistic - because sure, you got NYC Serenade and the like, but he was usually power over finesse.
I've always said that the best way to know if a famous person deserves respect is to look at how they treat the ordinary people who serve them in ordinary situations - the waiters, the cashiers, the parking valets, the store clerks. If they're rude to those people, they're not worth my attention or my respect, or anyone else's either.
Here is an interesting little fact. Paul Simon was at Frank Zappa's house and Paul Simon was very sad and miserable. Frank asked him what was wrong? Paul replied with he had to pay $7000.00 in taxes. Frank turned to Paul and said, "what? I wish I could earn $7000.00.
