    Excellent advice. A tip for new officers: if you possibly can, never ever go to a domestic on your own - domestics can be some of the most dangerous calls to attend. Always go with at least 1 other officer.

      Yep. That and traffic stops. One of our officers got shot in the head (he lived) during a T stop and after that, the department adopted a policy stating that all calls and traffic stops get a backup dispatched. It’s just the safest way to do things

      @@freefieldtraining can you offer tips for dealing with mental break downs at least until another unit arrives to work out a plan?

    • @joethompson7008
      @joethompson7008 8 місяців тому

      @@brandonserr634first thing you should know. When you pull someone over you are required to read the person their Miranda Rights immediately before you ask for any form of identification. Second dealing with someone who has breakdowns during the stop and you don't have backup. Go sit in your car until back up arrives and try your best to deescalate the situation without violating their rights. If you don't know the law how can you effectively deescalate a situation without knowing basic civil rights.

    Thanks for your video, great tips. I was a security officer back in my home town (Hong Kong) mainly work on residential sites. One night, I and my partner got a domestic call, we went there and found two women screaming at each other with a little bit of "push and pull" on each other. Both I and my partner have never been trained to handle this kind of situation, so I made the mistake you mentioned in the video - I stand between both parties. I got some scratches from them when their argument went a bit more violent. We learn our lesson fast, and my partner step in to desperate one of the women while I continue to talk to the other. After some time these women claimed down and agreed to stop.

    This is a great topis. I wish private security compa ies would get training foe their guards/officer in this. A lot of times they are the first ones at a domestice at hotela or apartments. Neighbors call in a noise comaint, guard goes to apartment and instead of jist loud music it's a fight between spouses/domestic partners/whatever. And as many here know that can get real bad real fast.

    Training is different than educating. Generally, training means teaching police officers to react to a given situation in the field. Education involves developing the mental and moral tools police officers should possess to build strong relationships with the community. It will teach police officers to think about their response to various problems based on vast amounts of knowledge and then take thoughtful action to resolve a problem.
    What they need is educating them on our Constitutional rights. Police officers enter their profession by taking an oath to the U.S. Constitution. So why is there no concerted effort to make police constitutionally literate? Just think about how much better the police-community relations would be if police were constitutionally literate.
    Constitutional literacy entails knowing the Constitution sufficiently well enough to invoke it properly. Those who take an oath to the Constitution have the responsibility to know its contents and interpretations of it, such as court decisions that are professionally relevant. There's a lot of men and women that have a career in policing without ever even reading the Constitution. So how sincere is one's oath to the Constitution if one hasn't read it or doesn't understand it?
    First of all, police academies should replace the standard five to six months of training with a two-year curriculum. In addition to the necessary physical, firearms, and tactics training, recruits should take classes that you might typically find in an undergraduate program - from criminal and constitutional law to sociology, psychology, and conflict resolution. A clear understanding of the nature of the society they will serve, and all its complexities are fundamental to any member of a service profession.
    By doing a simple search on UA-cam and watching a few videos of "First Amendment Audits" you can plainly see how ignorant most police officers are when it comes to our rights. So more education is needed, not just training. www.policechiefmagazine.org/education-offers-best-solution-for-police-misconduct/

    What would you do if you arrive on scene on your own, and don't have a partner to help separate the two?
    How would you go about separating them, or at the least, holding their focus so they don't go back to screaming at each other when one is explaining their side of the story?

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 років тому +3

      +Fragdog Media Sometimes life gives you lemons and you just have to eat them because there is no sugar and you are starving. I do the best I can to get them to take turns and keep their focus on me. I try to do the one whole story at a time method. "Ok, I'll talk to you after I hear what she has to say. Don't interrupt and then I will let you say whatever you want without her interrupting. I really want to get both of your sides so we can work out this issue like adults." When one try to interrupt I just say, "I can't understand either of you when you are doing this. Ill listen exclusively to you when she is done". Again the key is being the neutral third party that is bringing order and wants to help. Kind of like dealing with children who have had a fight.

      I just like to share what I have learned so far and see if others have any tips or "street advice" on the same topic. Books only teach so much, FTO will teach the street smarts.

    Who needs to go to an actual police academy? All you need in order to learn everything there is to know about police work, is to watch this police expert's videos.....NOT!!! What a joke!!

      +Ali Fara This is meant to be a primer for people who don't get the requisite field training to be able to apply what is taught at the police academy correctly. (I've met quite a few at work) and people who don't even get that (I've also run into a few who fell between the legal cracks) It is definitely not meant to be a replacement for academy classes.

I cannot go anywhere I'm stuck in this house my mum's in a hospital the rest of my family doesn't care about me the only one that does is my nana on my dad's side but she's more than 100 miles away

      It seems to be calming down but since we're all stuck in this house with no form of distraction or entertainment he's going to go upstairs again cuz he has nothing to distract himself from his thoughts he will go upstairs and start this argument all over again
