- Dallas has a variety of different train systems, including Light Rail, Trolley, Streetcar, and People Mover.
The Streetcar system is unique as its the only rail system in the US using an onboard battery instead of overhead wire for part of the route.
Compared to cities in the North East of the US, Dallas looks realy clean and well mantained.
And instead of plastic banks the metro cars and street cars have seats with fabric covering. That's nice.

zeisselgaertner the transit in Dallas is pretty nice. The city itself is very grimey and dirty though.
Morqavis Studios Dallas is one of the cleaner major US cities though. I don't think there is a single major US city that isn't grimey.

I'm surprised Dallas has both a heritage streetcar line, and a modern streetcar line! Usually, most cities use old cars and new cars on the same system, or the old cars are on a museum line that doesn't really go anywhere!
Back in 2012, a Kinkishayro streetcar was on display in Kansas City, and it had the same catenary and battery power system as these cars!
the Kenosha streetcar in Wisconson runs old cars, its pretty cool

I love the m line trolley. Right outside my apartment and takes me to a lot of different restaurants
I love the sound of that old school trolley unit. It sounds just like MUNI's Skoda ETI 14Tr units in San Francisco. Also that new streetcar wasn't too bad either :)
Great video. I Never road the trolly but I was at uptown city place in dallas seen it come in and it rotates around and they hook a wire at the top which was really cool to see.

I remember all Dallas had was old PCC cars to Tandy Leather. Wow!
That was in Ft Worth and they were non-PCC St. Louis cars They connected the parking lots along the riverbank to the basement of Tandy's skyscraper.
Really cool!!!!!!😁😁😁. I wish the politicians in Chicago would be more for public transit like other cities are because you need variety of different ways to get around a city. Like with the CTA Red and Purple Lines running on embankment that's need to be replaced with a new one being it's long after it's lifespan of useability. And know that they're planning to rebuild it and I know that it takes time to do it but it seems that other cities are able to do the same thing more often than us. Sure some places we can use the bus but not all of us wants to use the bus and in a hurry to get to our destination and the L helps us to get there faster than the bus. I just wish Chicago politicians would invest more in our public transit system like other cities are because you need variety.
As much as I like seeing rail transit, I don't like trains mixing with pedestrians and car traffic. It causes too many accidents and adds to traffic. Grade separated trains are much better, like most of the CTA trains in Chicago.
Luke Starkenburg I see what you mean but it just seems nowadays the politicians only care about expanding the highway system then expanding our public transit system. As I said before you need variety to be competitive with the world. Not all people have a car or want to drive into the city with the traffic jams on the highway so having a good public transit system is a requirement to be competitive with the world. I might be poor but even I know that you can't just rely on cars in the city you need to rely on multiple forms of transit and that's what they need to get through their heads. Heck when Trump became the president even though I couldn't vote because of my spina bifida and fatty filum prevented me from going to vote I would've voted for him being he's from New York City Area and I knew that he knew that we need a good public transit system to stay competitive with other cities in the world so I thought if he won it would be the best case scenario for public transit and he would make sure that we get a better public transit system and the projects that we have can get off the ground and get closer to building it. But once I saw what he was doing to people who came here to get away from their war torn countries illegally I had a chance of heart. I love public transit but if it means that the illegal immigrants who came here to get away from their war torn countries illegally I don't want it. They would be going back to their deaths and I don't want that to happen. If they gave me a choice of keeping the illegal immigrants or public transit I would keep the illegal immigrants so they can be safe from the war and not worrying about if they'll die every day. What's more important a better public transit system or life? I think life is a thousand times more important than a better public transit system. We can use the bus to get to places where the train doesn't go to bur we only have one life once you die there's no going back. I wish we could make a compromise on the situation with illegal immigrants and public transit. Like they can stay if they help build any public transit system and make sure the pay checks is decent amount for a family.
Detroit needs public transit. Worst public transit in the country.
CTA is more expansive than DART is
(Not saying it doesn't need improvements all US Transit systems do even NYC)

I doubt Detroit's system is worse tho it probably is bad being the Motor City and all

Yes, it's also shown at 2.28. I was surprised to see such a sharp curve, and I figured it was to transfer streetcars to the rest of the system for storage and maintenance. I haven't been to Dallas in quite a while, and I've been wanting to see the streetcar extension that they opened a few years ago.

I 100% agree with you man, people need to learn that not all US cities have bad transportation. Dallas serves as a good example for having reliable transportation alongside DC, Seattle, Boston, Milwaukee, Miami, Chicago etc.
We were in Texas this spring but unfortunately the Las Colinas system was closed for maintenance work. I've wanted to ride that strange little system for years and years. I thought I had read somewhere that it's now manually operated, instead of automated - is that the case? I really hate that they run single cars - they're not symmetric!
Yes, it is a strange little system, and it looks even more different running only single cars. It is run manually, with an operator onboard. It was nice chatting with the operator and seeing the interactions with the regular riders.

It's funny you mention that; I was actually a bit anxious before we arrived about that... I was worried if we got a chance to ride it they would "shoo" me away or not allow me on board for simply wanting to go for a ride without a real purpose! :)
It sucks that nearly every major city in Texas has some sort of rail of transportation except San Antonio. I wish they did
I'm originally from SE San Antonio. I've lived in Pasadena & West Houston. We have it here, but Dallas & DFW as a whole is the best and biggest light rail system in the nation. Even with a subway. If every major city in TX had an all around top notch rail/subway system, PLUS a statewide bullet train system, MAAAN, we'd REALLY be #1💯 I used to drive trucks for 3 1/2 yrs. Had the NorTex route for 2 years. I was so amazed at that system. It's in Tarrant, Denton, and Collin Counties as well.
@Enmity the Kindhearted Yeah that would be great if it finalizes. BRT is here with more to come and extended LRT is on the way in Greater H Metro Area. Monorail People Movers would also be kool if we get something like that as well. Especially in Harris County suburbs and out of county suburbs.

+Richard Hordle It was a weekday around noon that I rode the streetcar. There was actually one other person riding, but I am surprised as well that not more passengers were on. The tram ran every 15 minutes or so. Maybe in the morning and evening commutes there are more riders. Also, once the tram route is extended there will be more ridership. This may have been a starter line just to prove the battery technology. It gave Dallas some good press as being innovative!
Wish we had this in Austin.

Are those streetcars made by Siemens? They sound like ours here in Houston. Dallas definitely has the best transit system (at least for my needs) in Texas. I'm moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex when I have the means.
They're different then the ones we have, ours are larger and do not have batteries.

They're on the right track but this could be a 100-times better. High-speed subway people. Think something like Seoul, Korea, or Singapore or Taipei, Taiwan. Dallas would positively mushroom with growth. Get the tunnel borers and start building. It will equal growth on top of growth.

It's the first time a tram has used battery power in the US so I think they are being very conservative. Also I think the bridge was the most important section to be wire-free. The stops at the end of the lines are probably not enough to keep the batteries full all day.

And that is exactly why battery operated transport is not really the future, the battery technology is still lacking credibility, and I wonder it will ever be good enough to replace diesel or overhead wires, in whatever form.
Maybe trolley buses are the future?

downtown dallas looks quiet boring and no virancy
+Yandoff sniff the route the M-Line Trolley went through some really nice neighborhoods full of neat bars and restaurants. I wanted to get off and walk around, but I didn't want to wait 15 or 20 minutes for the next trolley. (I wanted to get to the next train in Dallas)

For better or worse, the city was built with the automobile in mind...not pedestrians. Add to that a tremendous amount of sprawl and very high temperatures May-September and most people would rather be inside! If you wish to see people walking in Dallas, go to Galleria or Northpark Mall! I miss Dallas, my hometown. Thanks for posting.
I went in may and I was in uptown deep ellum and lower greenville I was actually really impressed...even downtown fort worth was awesome
Sounds no different from downtown Sacramento which is even more boring with no soul at all. I've been here only two years and definitely plan on leaving very soon

I checked on their website and the M Line Trolley and the streetcar are all wheelchair accessible.
Luke Starkenburg there is only a general statement about accessibility, nothing specific about the trolley. Their regular lines are accessible but as far as I can determine this along with many other trolley systems are not accessible.
Probably because it was built in 1909. And yes, it does have wheelchair access. They put you and your wheel chair in front of train and push you along...lol. No, there is a lift on some of the cars

+LovethisNation are you referring to the M-Line Trolley? Several cities are bringing back old historic trolley lines. It is incredibly popular in San Francisco and of course New Orleans. I agree that is is slow, but its charming in a way.

@@Luke_Starkenburg I was referring to the more “modern” street car. I understand the historical context and usability for the trolly but the street car investment makes no sense to me. There are efficient faster ways to do mid distance transportation in cities. Look at Toronto or Tokyo

It’s a vintage trolly car built in 1909. You will probably be a little bit less spry when you are 113 years old. The m line is also a free ride. There is a donation box if you want to donate to the foundation that is keeping this system alive.

I am so sorry, I accidentally deleted your reply. When I got on the vehicle, the operator asked me where I wanted to go and I said that I didn't know and that I just wanted to ride. He was friendly and willing to chat a little bit.
