Cardinals sounds and calls are very distinctive from other birds. Typically every spring the male cardinal will perch high atop a tree and call out in search of a mate. You will hear very patterned calls that sound like chip, chip, chip or cheer, cheer, cheer.
When you hear the sound it doesn't take long to spot the bird as their bright red colours help them to stand out.
These birds are non-migratory and will usually end up living within a couple of kilometres (or mile) of where they were born.
These attractive birds will visit you regularly if you set up feeders that they can easily access.

My son plays this on his outdoor speakers at his home in Virginia. Within no time at all the trees are full of cardinals who are happily feeding on the mosquitoes... win win!!!
Love it. That's a great tip.
I just did it and a male cardinal flew to my tree!!!
I did it too in a cardinal flew right over my head within 3 minutes
Sounds good 👍 worth trying
There so Beautiful and interesting to see 🌞
I live in Northeast Alabama and these birds are a common sight. A male cardinals song, if you listen closely can be interpreted differently, as they all do not sound exactly the same. My wife and I, being nature lovers and outside people, came across a certain male cardinal several years ago. We got to noticing, this bird was following us around as we worked in our yard. Every time we moved, he would follow and lite on a branch near us, singing his song. My wife interpreted his song as Judy, Judy, Judy, Pretty, Pretty, Pretty. Of course my wife's name was Judy. She even gave him a name, which was Cardinowl. She would talk to him and thank him for saying she was pretty. That spring, Cardinowl took a wife and had 3 babies, 2 girls and a boy. We would watch them everyday as the parents went about teaching their young how to survive and what to eat. During this time we had a tremendous amount of Japanese Beetles. Anyone who knows anything about these pest, know, they have no nemesis. Nothing would eat these things and they multiplied tremendously, stripping all vegetation to the point of killing it. We got to noticing that Cardinowl was teaching his young and his wife to eat the beetles. When we saw this, we stopped spraying in fear of killing them. Eventually, the children grew into adults. The females were hard to keep up with but the male was easy to identify and Judy named him Cardinowl Jr. The father followed us around for 3 years until one spring he did not show up. We figured he had passed away or a predator had gotten him. During all this time, several families came from these same birds and they all taught their children to eat the beetles. Because of this, now the beetles in our immediate area are a minor problem. We liked to think that Cardinowl heard us complaining about the beetles and did something about it.
Thanks for sharing your cardinal family experience. Very interesting, especially their control of the beetles.
My fiance and I love the outdoors too! The birds here in Kentucky are very wise, but I have followed a northern mockingbird who was a juvenile when he arrived after we bought the newly built home and also has settled here and raised a family. They mimic all birds and their songs are brilliant.
Thank you to my Virginia neighbors ❤
A cardinal used to follow our family after supper, when we'd taken our Beagle for a medium-long walk. It was almost like that bird wanted to make sure we'd gotten home. (And I'd fill the feeders.)
6:20 a.m., it's barely light outside, and a Cardinal is chirping, waking everyone up.
My parakeet is chirping back at it, MAXIMUM VOLUME. *headache 🙃
I really loved this story. Thank you for sharing
What a lovely story
I'm in central Texas here, just north of Austin about 45 mins...
I have a shop on my land and lots of trees with a small creek. I recently started putting out birdseed and hung one feeder that I pour feed in.
I started playing this and I have a most amazing group of Red Cardinals and some other small birds just having a blast back here.. Thanks for the recordings and playlist.
You're most welcome. Thanks for sharing. Happy to hear it worked for you.
My pit bull loves this birds song. When we encounter it while walking she like goes into a mini trance... I play it when she's laying out in the yard and she loves it
Great to hear. Cardinals have fans of all kinds.😉
I am 53 years old and was born and raised here in Arizona. I saw a Cardinal for the first time in my life, in person, about 3 weeks ago. It was so beautiful, and larger than I expected. I was inside my house with the doors and windows open and I heard these sounds that I hadn't heard before so I ran out with my phone and actually got it on video. I was so blown away by how loud and beautiful it was. The sound it was making sounded like - "Spears spears spears spears" They are not common here so I feel blessed to have seen one, and so close 🤗
Yes, I agree. Cardinals are very impressive birds. I too, have always been amazed at how clear and distinguishable their calls are.
Hey if you're into heavy metal check out a band called Alexisonfire. They have a song called Born and Raised and one called Young Cardinals
I live in Arizona also, have so many by our place, behind is a wash loaded with lush trees, and an abundance of quails, Chickadees, love feeding them. They're all so very special
On my patio in Southwestern Ontario. I played this and had a cardinal zoom past my head four times, right away!
Glad to hear it worked for you. Thanks for sharing.
These Birds are bouncing from tree to tree looking for this bird...Amazing
Thanks for sharing. It always amazes me how well the sounds of other birds attract more.
I’m playing this right now and the birds are coming to the feeders. Cardinals, Titmouse, Bluebirds, Golden finches and woodpeckers. Love this video. From Lake of The Ozarks, Missouri. 🦜🦜🦜
Sounds great. Enjoy!
Never fails!!
This one draws the male AND female to my feeding station within 15-20 minutes EVERY TIME!!
Just got into bird feeders this year and was amazed how this video actually brings the Cardinals to my yard! Told my sister about it, and she didn’t believe me. So one day in her yard, I played it and sure enough, they came. She was shocked and delighted when three of them came! Thank you for sharing. 🤗
You're most welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
How long does it take?
It's my birthday and had one sing in the tree when I came back from dropping my daughter off to school. So lovely
Happy birthday
My computer sits next to an open window and I just noticed the cardinals outside are responding to this video. How cool!
It truly is amazing how well the birds respond to recorded sounds from their extended family members.
I'm not sure why this isn't bringing the cardinal that the lawn mower scared away back, but it is making the house finches go CRAZY 😂
Omg! I'm sitting on my deck playing this & the cardinals are answering me!! 💕💕💕💕
The first time of the year when I hear these birds again is during late winter, and their call is a lovely musical reminder that spring is around the corner.
You have the BEST Cardinal video …. EVER! I frequently play it when I’m sitting on my front porch & the Cardinals come flying in! Thank you!😊
Thank you very much for saying that. Very much appreciated. They are incredible birds aren't they.
Sitting in my car, (parked, not driving ) hiding my phone , moving my lips in whistle form.. I'm getting the strangest looks😂🕊️
ha ha, I love it.
Hahahaha
Haha...don't worry about THEM. Focus on the birds♡
I'm on my back deck in Minnesota and only the dog is out here with me (who is a shepherd who has a herding instinct) while the cat looks out the window until I take him on a "walk-about" but ONLY on a harness and leash because I DO NOT want him killing any birds... because as we all know cats are adept hunters!
Cardinals are some of my favorite birds and seeing them in my backyard in my apartment in NYC makes it so enjoyable
I couldn't agree with you more. They are natural favs! Thx for sharing.
@@NatureSoundsWithSongbirds but of course!! Birds are some of my favorite animals
Sounds of Mother Nature is simply SPLENDID! Huge THANKS be to GOD! (Father time😘) 🙏💪🌈🌲👣💒💝🗽
AMEN blessed by many things including all the sights and sounds of nature, just think of all the different places ppl visit each year?
I live in Utah, and there are no Cardinals here! Beautiful birds! Love their songs!😊
The cardinal call is incredible, isn't it. Thanks for sharing your comment.
@@NatureSoundsWithSongbirds I like the Robin's call.
Idaho either...so excited when I come South...they are everywhere!
Sitting in my shed's covered porch drinking coffee and having a cigar. Heard a couple of cardinals that are residents in my yard. Anyone notice that there are 3-5 small undertone notes after they call their main song??? Anyways, decided to play this recording to see if I could here the undertones I noticed.
5 minutes later, I've got about 3 pairs of cardinals and a couple more bachelor males flying around the shed with some pairs even flying under my roof, chasing one another.
One came so close I could've reached out and touched it!
Felt the swirl of air from their wing tips as they zoomed by my head!
What a awesome experience to have in the morning!
I'm glad to hear my video was able to help provide you with what sounds like a great experience. Thanks for sharing.
My baby boy loves this recording and flys and sits on the patio table next to me now as long as I don’t move suddenly too fast. I think his Mum and Dad must have told him that’s the lady with all the good food. Indiana here fyi
Love it. Thanks.
2 seconds In had the exact calls coming back from far away. 18 minutes in had a few friends in the back yard. Awesome.
Oh wow! That's awesome. Glad it worked for you.
These birds are fairly common in North Carolina (they ARE our state bird) but there's something so special about them. Someone mentioned that cardinals were considered messengers from the spiritual realm and that stuck with me. About a week and a half ago, I randomly felt really sad, found some red feathers on the ground, and felt like the time 1:11 pm was important. The next day, I found out that one of my close family friends' 10 year old son had tragically passed in a car accident. I had never once met him in my life (nor knew his name), but apparently his favorite color was red and he was estimated to have passed around 1pm.
Wow, maybe a coincidence but who knows. Thanks for sharing.
And there’s your sign….my auntie said when you lose a loved one they will visit you in spirit as a red cardinal ……I just say with God all things are possible….peace and love 💕
I've read or heard somewhere also, that the Red Cardinals are a spiritual connection with our (male) loved ones, that has passed on.
I do believe this is a true fact bcuz, every since my brother Mark passed 3yrs ago, this 1 particular Red Cardinal visits & chirps at me everyday. When he shows up, he chirps super loud, until I reply, "heeeeey Mark," or "Heeeey bro", but this is everyday, sometimes 2wice a day. I really do feel a connection with this bird. Or could it be bcuz I miss my brother sooooo much?
That’s one of the most beautiful birds out there!!
I think so too!
I hear pretty pretty pretty too! Beautiful bird love them in Florida
If you live in Florida, I think you'll recognize this bird as well: ua-cam.com/video/X3KkhGq1rwU/v-deo.html Enjoy.
@@NatureSoundsWithSongbirds I will in time I’m new to Florida
I sit on the Lanai drinking coffee every morning and listen. We behave behave few that sing "neener, neener, neener". Awesome!
I do the same! Love seeing the cardinals in my backyard on the feeder and trees!
I couldn't agree more.
Thanks , I’m in St Louis Mo playing this ,it’s so loud and familiar.
Glad you're enjoying it.
Currently I have 5 cardinals in my back yard anxiously trying to find this bird
Me too. I have a few
I have 4 lmao it’s busted it’s too easy but fun
Sitting on my back porch while birds are looking at me like I'm an imposter
Hahaha, anytime I'm outside and can hear them but not see them, I play cardinal sounds as I am doing right now and a male that frequently visits me keeps looking at me turning his head side to side but talking back lol we are big imposter's lol
I just love seeing my cardinals at the feeders in the winter time hanging out flying around chasing each other bringing their babies espically when they bring several families in at the same time it's so magical the red of the cardinal in the mixture of the white of snow. ❤
You're fortunate to see them in the winter. Do you use a mixed seed or something specific to attract cardinals? Please share. Thx.
I just use sunflower seeds with the shells it's way messier than shell less but shell less requires more fill I think. This is all I've ever used and I swear the entire neighborhood of birds comes to my yard daily but I do have 9 feeding stations and 3 bird baths plenty for everyone. Also have a variety of feeders such as open feeders and perching feeders having this variety is helpful because different birds prefer to eat quickly back and forth to feeder and some hang out on feeder for longer moments thru the day and there r ground feeders too etc....
I live in Ottawa and I see them often. Love them 💕 ❤️
Thanks, glad you're enjoying them. (hopefully the motorcycles didn't drown them out this weekend)
I’m in southern Arizona sitting outside on a hot day playing this and they’re singing back to this. 🥰
They are very social aren't they? Thx for commenting.
I love their sounds! They're such a lovely bird!😍
In my yard on Oyster creek, Sugar Land Texas, they have been there over the past 30 years!
One of my all-time favorite bird
Thank you for this video! I use it daily to converse with the male cardinal that I feed daily. He is always waiting for me in a tall pine tree where I live in Florida. They are amazing birds🌻🪺
You are so welcome! I'm glad it's working for you.
So glad I found this video, the audio is clear enough to where I can play it on my mini Bluetooth speaker and call the Cardinals.
Seen atleast five different cardinals come around the fence when I play this, Super useful!
Glad I could help!
Amazing. Within minutes I had two cardinals sit and the tree and look around. ❤
Wow nice
I hear so many birds singing & I see a cardinals so often that I wondered what their song sounded like so thank you for this video. When I'm outside working, sometimes they seem a bit curious as to what I am doing.
Thanks for your feedback and kudos. Much appreciated.
“Observe intently the birds of heaven; they do not sow seed or reap or gather into storehouses, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they are?”
I have at least 12 cardinals come to eat daily under a tree in my backyard. Then I play some loud bluejay calls on my phone till the Jay Clan comes by for some peanuts and finally I play a red bellied woodpecker call and this pair always shows up shortly after. I wait for the cards, bluejays, and woodpecker to show up then I go back in the house lol
Sounds like quite a party. 😉 Thx for sharing.
We had 20 feet of grape vines and a mated pair of Cardinals. I would watch them look over the bunches of grapes and pick the ripest one. I will admit to having some unkind thoughts. But I learned slightly tart, unripe, concord grapes, are delicious with bitter yard greens.
In a seldom used, leaky pole barn, my father had set up a length of gutter under one particular leak. A pair of Cardinals made a nest on the uphill end. I noticed the male and female taking turns flying into the barn so I quietly stood next to the gate. Both birds checked me over and then flew in. After a few trips, they ignored me. I saw the little heads poking up with mouths open! Stayed there probably 20 minutes then drove home and got my wife so she could see. That's the only time I've ever observed a Cardinal nest. What a treat!
Thanks for sharing your experience.
I love nature sounds. I love bird sightings as well. Thanks.
Thank you too. I appreciate your comment.
haha thanks for this video i heard the first bird call n did it back in my backyard n down came a male cardinal! even tho im from illinois n my state bird is a cardinal i never knew the exact call!!
ahahah sometimes little things makes ur day! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
so true...
Great video. Thank you so much! We have 2 pair of Cardinals in our yard and one of the male birds is getting very friendly and will come sit on a pole and look at us when we are floating in the pool. He also does this as a decoy for his mate to sweep down and forage. LOL They are fascinating. I believe that when you see a Cardinal, a loved one is “visiting” from Heaven. ❤️
My son died in Feb and ever since it’s been a year of all kinds of bird events lately it’s blue jay and cardinals
Such a lovely sound
@@mixytampa812 I am so very sorry for your tragic loss. No patent should ever have to bury a child. I do think the birds are visits though. I’m glad their songs bring some comfort to you. My prayers are with you Mixu. xo❤️xo
I'ts almost as if it's saying i am i am i am pretty pretty pretty
Mine say pretty bird, pretty bird ..
Yea
It sound like, "really, really, really, pretty pretty pretty"
Uhm. Duh. It's Red. It's Pretty. It's the North Carolina State Bird for a reason 😁😉
I always say that they are singing “pretty pretty pretty.” Finally- someone agrees w me!
I just had a nice conversation with one of these guys, cuz why not?
Love it 😂
In Ontario. This works well to attract the Cardinals! Thanks.
Yes it does. Thx for sharing.
To me, many of their calls have always sounded like, "biirrdie? biirrdie? pew pew pew pew pew pew pew!!!"
ha, ha yes I could hear that. Thx for sharing.
@@NatureSoundsWithSongbirds I didn't know it was a cardinal until a few years ago. I just called it the laser bird. Pew pew pew pew! I also went decades without knowing that the "kee-keeee" bird was a chickadee. :D the chickadee is such a great musical interval though, it's like a "wrapping it up, that's that" descending major second interval. "alll done!"
Thank you for this! I've been trying to get a picture of a cardinal forever! This really helped attract them
Glad it was helpful!
I just had a cardinal fly right to my car ❤🎉😊
It is surprising how well these sounds work to attrack other cardinals, isn't it.
@NatureSoundsWithSongbirds almost instantly! Now, after a few days, they communicate when I drive down the driveway. Such a gift.
Bruh I saw one today for the fist time my mom didn't believe me so I showed her a pic because I took a pic of it and then she believed me but these birds are loud but now I'm in love with birds
Glad to hear.
Beautiful birds/songs
Thanks for commenting. I appreciate that.
I have a great number of cardinal in my yard. They seem to live in a low bush. I'm glad I found this site to help with identifying their calls.
Welcome to my channel. I'm glad you found me. Thx for commenting.
"Really Really Really Really Really, Pretty Pretty Pretty Pretty Pretty"
I love the Call of the Cardinal
I agree. No other bird gives quite the same sound.
I'm in Denver, which is not officially in their range, but I have seen some reports of these birds straying into Eastern Colorado. I wonder if I let this play long enough we will see them here in the city!
So far only people walking by are looking for the sounds. And it woke up my cat Kimmie.
My cat got nervous with the sound so I came back inside and she bit me twice on my foot. Hahaha love animals.
Pretty bird retry style
The brown finches often chase away the only cardinal that comes to my feeder . When I played this they when crazy at the feeders and the cardinal was looking towards the sound with amazement from far away.
The cardinals are quite territorial. He was probably trying to spot the uninvited guest to his territory.
Sounds said! Pretty 😍 Pretty
Others had said the same. Thx for sharing.
Pretty pretty pretty...
I hate the color red but absolutely love the beautiful color on an animal like the cardinal anyway I'm in long island ny and I'm def having a full blown convo with a male nextdoor awesome
ha ha, that's great.
I hv a bird feeder and lots of cardinals come!
I’m trying to get some good pictures of cardinals and this made them look all around for other cardinals but it attracted doves
I guess the doves consider themselves extended family members 😉
@@NatureSoundsWithSongbirds 😆 lol
I've been trying to figure out the identity of this bird for years! Omg...pretty, pretty, pretty! Lol...
Just put up my bird feeder, turned on the video. In about 10 minutes I had a cardinal couple come to call.
Thanks for your comment. It is truly amazing how well the cardinal sounds attract other birds.
I always thought they sounded like they were saying “birdy birdy birdy”
Yes, I have heard other people say the same thing. Interesting isn't it.
SAME
Me too! That's what I always call back to them with. I didn't know they were cardinals, they're so loud that it's hard to figure out where it's coming from.
I'm playing this in my ear(airpod) and hearing the birds outside out of my other ear. Bird feeders are expensive but I can't help but subsidize... I agree with someone else it sounds like pretty pretty pretty pretty but I had a friend who passed on that makes me think of judy judy judy
Thanks for sharing. Nice reminder.
Pretty bird
I Hope the son has food and a birdbath for the birds.
Nice - very nice cover on top of your feeder to foil greedy squirrels!
Yes, it does seem to work well.
I’m in Ohio. Played this for 1.5 minutes and had 4 cardinals come right to us.
It really is surprising how well it works, isn't it. Thx for commenting.
Why doesn’t this work for me? I live in NC THIS IS OUR BIRD. Been outside for 2 hours a none!
Cute bird and nice song
2 male cardinals came within the first 2 mins of playing this
So nice! Thank you
Glad you like it!
I have been trying sooo hard to attract Cardinals. I have feeders up but never have them come 😕
I can hear them down the road though. I’ve bought wild bird seed, black oil sunflower seeds and safflower seeds! Any suggestions??
Maddys vlogs maddy I always thought they were very timid birds! That’s exciting 😊
Mine are crazy about sunflower seeds and millet
Mine love unsalted peanuts 😉
Beautiful
Good💙🧡
Glad you like it
it works here in Wisconsin. Also -right near Rhinelander.
Good to hear. Thx for sharing.
This is my alarm clock every morning I have two of them that are living in my tree by my window 5 a.m. to 5:30 they start😳😳😳
We can totally relate, same here. Thx for sharing.
Here in long island they are residents all year in a foot of snow or hot summer day
We're not so lucky here but they are one of the first birds to appear when the spring thaw begins.
❤❤❤❤
Thanks
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
❤️👍👍😘😘😘
You're too kind. thx.
Estoy viendo esto para sentirme mejor 🥞🤧
Espero que haya funcionado :)
The spread is 72 😂 the other team must feel like Mike Tysons opponents during his prime..defeated before the match even began lol
Wow! I saw one but it didn’t come to the feeder don’t know why any tips?
Since cardinals are generally territorial birds the one you saw may not have wanted to get to close for fear of upsetting.
Iowa had a severe drought this summer which killed all the song birds. Don't know if they will show up again
😢
Lets hope...
What are the other birds making noises or is it more cardinals?
The loudest birds you hear are other cardinals responding.
Should i stop the video when they come if i just want them to come and eat from the feeder? And should i put it close to the feeder or on top of it?
Yes once the cardinals arrive I would stop the video. They will feel safer.
i I heard their noise ones and I and I copied it and then a cardinal flew by and I was so surprised
The cardinal recorded sounds definitely work in attracting others.
Now, i have a question though, i rlly like the idea of this cause it actyally brings the cardinals, but idk what to do after because they come, try to look for that bird which is tge phone, n then they dont find the bird so they fly away. What should i do after the cardinal comes? Because i wanna befriend them
They love unsalted in the shell peanuts and black oil sunflower seeds.
Stop the video once they arrive and the newcomer won't feel threatened and may stick around.
One time, at my late parents old house in central Ohio, I was looking out back at FOUR bright red cardinals spaced along the back bushes, bare at the end of winter. I'd never seen four together before. Even weirder, I noticed there were MANY other birds in those bushes and, when I looked closer, they were nearly all brown cardinals. They were all just hanging out so I started counting. When I was done I told my mom to come look. I said there were over THIRTY cardinals in our bushes. My mom said I was crazy because she only saw four. I explained the birds with the bright red feathers were MALE but the duller-plumed one's with reddish beaks were FEMALE. And a TON were spread all along the back bushes. My mom went from being doubtful to miffed to learn that the males were "prettier." I said "Yeah, but look at the bright side. It's the boys who have to get dressed up if they ever want to get a girl to pick them!" It helped(🙃). But I never saw thirty cardinals in those bushes before or after. Maybe that was just because I never really looked or the branches were covered in leaves whenever I did. I don't know a lot about birds (Are cardinals gathering in such large groups not unheard of?) but that moment was a real treat for Mom and me.
Thank you for sharing this unique personal story. I couldn't help but smile thinking of you putting a positive spin on Mother Nature's choice to the male cardinal color to your mom. I have to admit I've never seen that many cardinals congregated together in one area. Great tale.
No to the jet noise
There's small red birds in my yard that look similar to Cardinals but there call goes wee oooo wee oooo
Wee oooo wee oooo and over and over.... What could it be?
Anyone notice how the red cardinals always seem to chase each other? Same thing with the squirrels 🤔
Yes, the males will protect their breeding territory with determination.
I have a nest of those birds at my tree. They have 3 babies at the moment ❤️
Very sad update: They Mysteriously disappeared and found a Dead one 😢
So sorry to hear.
