First, thank you SO much for this video series. Before watching, I had used Keith Owens, James Messer, and Jason Dion and all of them have their benefits in terms of detail or practicality. However, your video series absolutely solidified the practical application of subnetting as none of the others had. It just totally nailed it for me. I can do it now. Thanks again!
This leads me to a question. Is there a reason you don't list the seven questions in an order that would make the arrangement more sequential?
This pattern always leads to a 2/3 sequential relationship.
Two IP's in sequence, Three IP's in sequence.
    Network/ First IP (2), Last IP,/Broadcast/Next Net (3).
    For example:
    Target: 10.1.1.37 /29
    Network ID: 10.1.1.32
    First IP: 10.1.1.33
    Last IP: 10.1.1.38
    Broadcast IP: 10.1.1.39
    Next Network: 10.1.1.40
    # Of IP's / Usable: 8/6
    CIDR / Subnet: 255.255.255.248

Yea, if I'm honest that is a more sensible way of laying it out. The truth is the 7 attributes were listed that way in my notes when I made the video. I didn't think to optimize the order. Maybe at the time I chose intentionally not to, to further highlight that you can solve for each independent of the others.
But yea, if I could tell the me from 3.5 years ago when I made those videos to make the order more sensible, I definitely would have =)

To help me remember the seven attributes of subnetting, I reordered them in sequential order (according to what Frank44060 said) and used the following mnemonic: "NFL Broadcast Next In Channel" ....if you list that vertically then it looks like....
      N
      F
      L
      Broadcast
      Next
      In
      Channel
      which translates to
      Network ID
      First Host IP
      Last Host IP
      Broadcast IP
      Next Network
      IP addresses total
      CIDR/subnet mask
Other than that, I just remember that subnet mask, Network ID, and Next Network are the first three things I gotta find then the rest will be easy.

In any case... in those situations, you are looking at a legacy / outdated question. It's asking you to infer the Subnet Mask from the Classful address (i.e., the first Octet). This article has more details: www.practicalnetworking.net/stand-alone/classful-cidr-flsm-vlsm/

Subnetting is simply taking a list of individual IP addresses and grouping them together. The number of IP addresses never changes, but the number of groups does based on how you subnet/group the IPs.

Thank you so much for this. I have been trying to find an easy way that helps visually understanding subnetting. Studying for my Network+ exam and hope to be ready for it by end of October or beginning of November. Get this on udemy or LinkedIn learning. I think many will like this.

Im confused.. at 4:43 when you show that .128 to .159 is 32 ips .. im only counting 31.. what am i missing?

    • @PracticalNetworking
      @PracticalNetworking  Рік тому

If you do 159-128, you get 31. But that's not the right operation. You have to count all the IP addresses between (and including) 128 - 159.
      For example: 17-12 = 5. But [12,13,14,15,16,17] has 6 entries.
      Hope this helps!

I speak to that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/zmxLg4jV0ts/v-deo.html
It has to do with Binary. I teach on binary in this video: ua-cam.com/video/RrJXLdv1i74/v-deo.html
(although, the binary video doesn't specifically speak to your question)

I really like this methodology for solving the seven attributes of subnetting and have watched the first 7 videos so far. That said, I've come across a real-world type practice problem that confused me (maybe from the way it was worded) because I couldn't use the techniques I learned to solve a subnetting problem like this:
You are given a single class C license: 197.40.12.0/24 and need to create three subnets that support at least 10 users. What subnet mask will work?
You're given four choices and the choice "255.255.255.192" was the correct answer. I just want to know how I can apply what I've learned so far to answer this kind of subnetting question. Thank you.
