Bands With One Great Album

  • If I really like a band, I'll typically buy almost every album they release. Here's the opposite. In this video, I show 34 artists in which I own only one studio album by them. In some cases, they only released one album. But in others, one studio album (and perhaps a best of compilation / live album) is all I need.

OMG!!!!! I so enjoyed that crash!!!!! It's one of the all time best!!!!! Almost nothing stayed standing😂 You are on fire tonight. I would recommend you listen to two albums. Both great. Surf's Up by the Beach Boys and Edgar Winters White Trash. These are really great records. Diamonds And Rust is great. I would also add her Christmas album, Noel. Do you ever listen to Baby Jesus birthday music😂? I am so excited to here you are going to the Sphere. I can't wait for the review of both the show and the place. Did you have to get a second mortgage to pay for tickets? I've heard they aren't cheap....but what is these days.

Thanks David - thought of you instantly. I actually booked the tickets and Vegas trip close to a year ago and it seemed at that time that no one even heard of the Sphere. Tickets at that time weren't bad and the cost of the trip was a bargain. Now it's insane. ONe of the few times in my life I was an early bird. I've seen those two albums around - I'll check them out. People swear by Surfs Up. I love the cover art of it.. I have a couple of Xmas albums. Love the Tull one. Have some others - nice to hear in the season.

Another interesting video Alan! Did you choreograph that spill with help from the "Crash Test Dummies"? 😊 Anyway, the Edgar Winter and The La's selections are undisputable. I didn't see Billy Squier ("Don't Say No") or Crash Test Dummies ("God Shuffled His Feet"). The only other studio album that Carole King had to certify platinum status was "Music"; if I wound up on a deserted island that would be the one I'd want with me. The title track along with the single "Sweet Seasons" just makes that album much more uplifting than the heart wrenching "Tapestry". Also, I would take Don McClean's self- titled album over "American Pie" (I hear groans already!). Also I would, believe it or not would prefer "Cargo" over "Business as Usual" when it comes to Men at Work. Just one more: Todd Rundgren's "Something/Anything?" Thanks Alan.🎉

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  8 місяців тому

Lol - definitely not. I'm so low budget right? I need a bigger space or something for some of these videos. Anyway a viewer David loves the crashes - he says it's the best part of my videos...lol. But no, I'm not a fan...really. I'm a fan of Billy Squier and have a bunch of his albums, so he's not there. Don't have and don't actually know the music of Crash Test Dummies...sorry. Wow you prefer "Music" over Tapestry...now that really says something. I'll have to check that out. Some others also said Cargo is better. I know some songs from the two compilations I have so I'm definitely not adverse to picking that one up - thanks. I love Something/Anything but I have a bunch of Rundgren albums so didn't qualify or me - but oh yea that's a classic album. Thanks again.

Great to see Nick Lowe, NRBQ and Pete Yorn in your collection - although I respectfully disagree about not needing any other music from their catalogs. All three of those artists have large amounts of excellent music on their other albums but I agree the selections you chose are definitely their best work. Also happy to see the Sex Pistols and Rockpile included in your collection. Good job, as always. Have a safe trip to Vegas and I'm sure all of us are looking forward to your opinion of U2 in the Sphere. I have read some interesting viewpoints with some saying the entire experience actually takes away from the music. I'm sure you'll let us know. Happy Holidays !!

Don't feel the need for anymore NRBQ studio albums though. I've watched very little footage of the U2 Sphere show so I can be surprised and go in cold. I'll let everyone know what I think of course. Also will be seeing The Beatles Love show as well - and I'll do a review of that as well.

Valid point. But interestingly enough, I think my video had like 34 albums / artists. Interesting list Alan. I would argue that Don Mclean should have more than one album in your collection. Obviously the American Pie album was a classic, but so to IMHO were Tapestry and the 3rd Album Don Mclean. As for Spirit - Dr Sardonicas was their most accessible album which I have of course - full of great songs. Love - similar, I have that album also - Forever Changes - its a classic no doubt. Their others were pretty good to, but Forever Changes is the one. Gotta run - cya Doug

This is one of my favorite videos you've done. You're right - "great" albums are scarce, but many bands with just one great album do have other records that are good enough that I can't live without them. Boston is one of those, because Don't Look Back is such a good album.
Some notes while the vid was playing:
Odessa - I can't get into it! What the heck? Do you have a favorite track on it? Help me out. I've tried several times & feel I'm missing something.
My favorite Beach Boys record is either Summer Days or Surf's Up. I love many others too: Today, Wild Honey, Sunflower, Carl & the Passions, Holland, Love You.
You've picked a lot of debuts where, to me, the second album is better, sometimes markedly so. Like these:
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique destroys the debut. That is their "great" album, and it is absolutely essential.
Marshall Crenshaw - Field Day is the one to own, if you must restrict it to just one. He has about 5 "great" albums though IMO.
Living Colour - Times's Up over Vivid, though I don't love either of them. But I prefer the singles on Time's Up.
Nick Lowe - Labour of Lust over Jesus of Cool. Not a close one for me. It's Rockpile!
Men at Work - Cargo is a better record than Business as Usual, by a nose. Listen to "No Sign Of Yesterday" or "No Restrictions". Do it!
    And there's more!
That Flamin Groovies record is just OK. Better than Sticky Fingers? Ha! I'd recommend Shake Some Action. It's a much better record.
Love - you HAVE to get Da Capo. To me, side 1 is better than either side of Forever Changes. Side 2 is lame though, so it's a trade off.
Thanks for this great video. Here's an insane one from me: The only AC/DC I need is Back in Black. I can live without Highway to Hell.

Thanks so much. Funny when I do a video. I can never tell what video will be well liked or not. I'm usually so wrong - some I do and bomb (yet I thought was a great topic) and others...I can't figure it out. So thanks for your wonderful feedback. I know many swear by Beach Boys Surf's Up, but for me the Beach Boys are the ultimate compilation band. Though obviously I can be very wrong. I just never feel the need to listen to them. I'll have to try Summer Days or Surf's Up. I'm a fan of many double albums (vinyl days) and when I'm in the mood a good double album really can take you on a musical journey. It's been decades probably since I've listened to Odessa but I certainly really liked it at the time. I will say that "First Of May" is a tremendous song - incredible to me. If you don't like that one...it's not for you. With that said, I've no desire for any other additional Bee Gees studio albums. I'm getting many comments about Living Colour's Time's Up - I'm sold, I'll have to get that one for sure. I'll have to dig further into Crenshaw as well. The compilation I have is great and cherry picks from Field Day and others but I'll have to pick up the studio album. If Field Day is better than the debut...then wow. I actually forgot about Labour Of Lust. That was a huge album but for some reason I didn't buy it, though I do have the hits on compilations. Same with Men At Work, I have two compilations albums but I"m not adverse to getting Cargo as well. I know Paul's Boutique is considered a perfect classic...why I never picked it up...not sure. I don't listen to Beastie Boys much, so maybe that's why. I have a bunch of AC/DC but I don't consider myself a big fan. I actually prefer the Bon Scott era more...but AC/DC grates on me over time...perhaps not enough variety in their music. I'm not sure. Thanks for your wonderful comments and suggestions which I'll be taking up on.

The story of the development of Odessa is an intriguing one and worth reading up to better understand the eclecticism of the album's contents. I feel like it was a missed opportunity and could have been a towering achievement but if it had I'm not sure they'd have gone the way of the second half of their career. Great idea for a theme. I won't argue with your choices because they're personal taste, and that's yours. Looking at my own collection I'd throw in:
Ron Sexsmith's eponymous album. I've tried others but no.
'Little' Stevie Forbert 'Alive on Arrival'. Jam packed with all you need from his catalogue.
Camel's 'Moonmadness'. Others would argue for 'The Snow Goose' etc. I feel certain.
Taste 'On the Boards'. Rory Gallagher went on to solo greatness but this was the trio's finest hour.
Sting 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles'. I know everyone will go for 'Ten Summoner's Tales' for the exquisite single it contains, but 'Turtles' is more consistently excellent (personal opinion🙂).

Beastie Boys went on to even better things after Licensed To Ill, most particularly Paul's Boutique, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty being great examples. The La's is a great album, even though frontman Lee Mavers hated it because he felt it didn't match the sound he was looking for, and he became very reclusive after that. I absolutely love The Verve's music, I like the early atmospheric sounding stuff like their debut album Storm In Heaven not to mention those early singles and b-sides, some of which got put together on the No Come Down compilation. I really like your viewer Glen’s “one great album” idea - and the way you tweaked it into becoming “the only album you have” in your collection by a particular group or artist. I agree with many of your choices (e.g. the albums you selected by The Cars, Christie, Average White Band, Go-Go’s, Living Colour, Ringo Starr and the debut albums by Asia and Boston, respectively, though, for some reason, the massively successful Boston album never did much for me, personally). I do not count bands or artists that have released only one album because there is nothing else in the running by which a choice could be made. And I never count compilation or best of albums. Here’s what pops into my head when I think of the only studio LP that I would play more than once or twice by a specific band or artist: King Crimson’s “In The Court of the Crimson King;” Guns N’ Roses’ “Appetite for Destruction;” Jim Carroll’s “Catholic Boy;” Lucinda Williams’ “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road;” Blood, Sweat & Tears’ eponymous second album; Supertramp’s “ Breakfast in America;” Hole’s “Live Through This” (despite my DEEP DISLIKE for Courtney Love as a person); and L7’s “Bricks Are Heavy.”

Some great and interesting choices you have. I actually prefer Hole's 2nd album "Celebrity Skin" over "Live Through This" - more polished, produced and easy on the ear...more to my taste. Supertramp has many fine albums like Crime of the Century, Even in it's quietest Moments - lots of good stuff in their catalog. Lucinda Williams I'm a big fan of, though as you listed Car Wheels is like a perfect album and her best to me as well. Jim Carrol's Catholic Boy is an alltime favorite of mine, but his second Dry Dreams, though not nearly as good or essential, is a fine album too. King Crimson is an interesting one because so many lineups and styles, it's like completely different bands - I like the albums with John Wetton as well but I agree that In The Court is by far the best and a true milestone album - love Greg Lake's voice as well. I have no BS&T but that's a fantastic pick..would be all I'd ever want.

Thank you for mentioning other albums by the bands/artists chosen by me. My selections are not indications that I don’t like other albums by said bands/artists. The ones I picked are my go-to LPs, the ones I always put on when I feel like listening to that particular band or artist. Hence, the ones that I feel are all that I want because I don’t miss listening to the other ones in their entireties, even though I like songs on them. While I really appreciate collectors and LOVE watching the videos on your huge collection, I am not a collector -so I only own vinyl and CDs that are high (or “fairly high”) on my various listening lists. If I want to hear some songs on albums that I don’t own, I ask “Alexa” to play them for me. She’s been very good at making “uncommon” playlists for me 2:26 based on the songs I request. She’s also my go-to resource for hearing new albums, enabling me to stay on top of the latest releases and determine if I want to purchase them. But, ultimately, I treasure hearing the albums and CDs I love on my stereo system.

I'll have a go at this but in a slightly different way. I often buy a couple of albums by an artist so that I have a comparator so I don't think there will be many artists or bands who have released multiple albums where I only own one. Instead, I looked at artists who were strong contenders for a place in my top 200 studio albums that didn't have another studio album in my top 1000.
Some are people you have mentioned
    Carole King - Tapestry
    Love - Forever Changes
Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus
    Others
    Aimee Mann - Whatever
Back Street Crawler - 2nd Street
The (English) Beat - I Just Can't Stop It
Bob Marley - Exodus (this was the one I had as a teenager and I've never formed a strong relationship with the others)
    Bob Seger - Night Moves
    Deacon Blue - Raintown
    Donald Fagan - The Nightfly
Gravy Train - (A Ballad Of) A Peaceful Man
    Jackson Browne - The Pretender
Jim Carroll Band - Catholic Boy
New York Dolls - self titled
    Pulp - Different Class
Stevie Wonder - Songs In the Key Of Life

Jim Carroll is a great choice - love Catholic Boy - I do have his other albums - Dry Dreams is pretty good. World Party another great choice - Thanks as always for sharing.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow I only have three Aimee Mann albums including Bachelor and the live album. I've streamed some of the others, but I normally start with Whatever and don't move on.
Bob Marley is a little different. I play the Legend compilation about as often as Exodus and Live (the first one) as a third starting point. I tend to play reggae when it's warm and sunny and that doesn't happen often in the UK. I also think there's too much focus on Bob Marley so I try to make sure Burning Spear, Bunny Livingston, Peter Tosh, Culture etc also get attention.
On Bob Seger, my entry point was Night Moves and Live Bullet. The second live album is very good too.
The Pretender was probably my only Jackson Browne album for about 30 years. I have live albums, a big compilation and Late For The Sky but The Pretender remains the one I connect with deeply. I overindulged in singer songwriters during the pandemic so there seems to have been a backlash this year.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Hey 👋🏻 Thanks! The Ramones is my favorite along with the Pistols debut. Two powerful bursts of Punk rock energy!
For some strange reason the Ramones didn’t get their due. The Pistols got all the attention from the Media back then and the Ramones couldn’t get arrested. When it was the Ramones trip to London that inspired the Pistols to start a band. They were Ramones fans. And playing their version of Punk back in 1975 even. Pioneers.
Now the others are some of my favorite albums. The Pretenders are still great proto Punk or New Wave and Hyndes voice is one of the highlights!
Rockpile and Marshall Crenshaw are two great Retro Rock albums. Rockpile has David Edmonds and Nick Lowe! Edmonds cover of I hear you knocking is a great hit song he did. John Lennon said he listened to it over and over he dug it so much.
And last but not least is Elvis’s early music which is the birth of Rockabilly and features the incredible Scotty Moore on guitar 🎸. A smooth brilliant player!
That’s Alright Mama, Blue Moon and Good Rockin Tonight are still great fresh songs and Elvis’s voice shines during his debut with the original rock n roll trio! A seminal album for all time! Some say it’s the birth of Rock n Roll.
Other say it was Rock around the Clock ⏰ by Bill Haley that was the beginning. It was but Elvis became the King.
And if you hear the original versions of the songs he covered, he took Coal and turned them into Diamonds!
The originals are mediocre at best. They weren’t hits. Elvis comes along with his band and bang they become hit songs! Better then the originals!
He started rock n roll along with Chuck Berry who wrote classic rock music and invented Rock guitar! He was a great live performer, too I love Chuck Berry, too! He was great!
So was Buddy Holly! Buddy only had one album! He should be on your list and so should Eddie Cochran who wrote and sang Summertime Blues. A Classic rocker! Both died tragically early but made great music that created a lasting musical legacy. They had an album’s worth of music. Hollys greatest hits is still great! I’m stunned that he was only 22 when he died. He was an amazing talented guy!
And I can’t forget Ritchie Valens also who was only 17 when he died. He was great too! La Bamba is a classic!

Kinda disagree on the Beach Boys , 65 - 70 albums are all very interesting , you get two albums on 1 CD , Today , Surfs Up , Smiley Smiley, 20-20 , Friends etc

It's just me - I don't listen to the Beach Boys much and for me they're perfect for compilations and I have a bunch. But I always hear about Surfs Up and you're right the twofers are a great value. But I'm not insinuating their individual albums are not good. I just never had the desire. But after many comments here, I'll check out Surfs Up - I love the cover of that as well.

I'm a huge Beastie Boys fan, and I'm sad to know that Licensed To Ill is the only album of theirs that you think is their one and only great album. To me, while I will agree with you that it is a great introductory album for them, it is not their all-time 5-star best. In my opinion, they kept incrementally improving and exploring new compositional and creative territory from album to album. My personal vote for their absolutely flawless 5-star classic is their 1992* offering, Check Your Head -- with every single track (and not just the singles) being absolute bangers and a terrific complete album listen from opening to closing track without skipping. The albums which followed, while not quite as good as CYH was (by my subjective aural metrics), were still at least 4-star-worthy gems. To give context to my ratings system, I very rarely honor any album 4-star status, ratings; so, any album that earns 4 stars from me is still pretty f***ing good. Rarer still are albums that I rate 5 stars. Radiohead is one of a very few bands that have earned 5 stars from me for more than one album from their career catalog, and Tom Waits is one of a very few solo artists whom I've bestowed that rarefied honor upon
