- Old friend of the podcast, Nick Lowe has just released his 15th solo album, Indoor Safari, and he’s about to tour with Los Straitjackets. This absorbing conversation looks back at 60 years onstage and takes in the following …
… the secret of a long career.
… why he resolved “not to get that famous again”.
… touring Germany aged 15 in Brinsley Schwarz’s dad’s Dormobile.
… the Small Faces at the village hall in Hornchurch.
… to the Six Bells for seven pints with “photographer for all occasions” Jet Harris.
… playing Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent in the school band and wrestling with the chords to Cliff’s Living Doll.
… Kippington Lodge at Ally Pally, New Year’s Eve 1968, supporting Joe Cocker, the Bonzos and Amen Corner - “the Grand Canyon with a roof”.
… 270 dog walks with his son Roy during Covid and the things they discussed.
… the unique magic of working with “America’s premier instrumental surf band”.
… how ‘I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock And Roll’ is now a wedding staple.
… and the sole mention of ‘freakbeat’ vendors the Fleur De Lys in the history of our podcast.
Nick’s tour starts at the London Palladium on September 24:

Such a great interviewee. Nick is a brilliant raconteur.
What a great chat with my favorite songwriter.
Terrific bloke - loved the interview. So good I had to watch twice. More Nick Lowe, with a suitable amount of intervening time for Nick, of course !
Tremendous interview, seems like a wonderful gent. Love the new record. I'll be watching this one again.
How reassuring it is that Nick Lowe is still releasing albums and touring. I've been on board since 'Party Of One' and what I've heard of the new album is well up to standard.
Superb fella
Love this show. Greetings from Chicano
Nick I Love ya. I can remember blasting your tunes in my car and making everyone one angry and jealous that I was so loud and having the fun they weren’t having.
Thank you!
Cheers,
Chuk
The new album is very good. Lively timeless rock n roll.

Going to see Nick in Leeds tomorrow night, can't wait and los straitjackets
I saw Nick at that CREATION gig. We took a taxi back home sharing the ride with a young girl who’d seen all of the reunion gigs. I was impressed
Saw Nick Lowe in Asbury Park NJ at a SurfRockFest at the beach with Los StraightJackets. Been a fan since the 80's had a Nick Lowe Dave Edmunds album with a bonus 45 attached covering Everly Brothers. I also had Rockpile album!
Such a legend, one of my heroes!
Just fabulous! I could listen to you forever. Stories by day and music by night. Great interview!
One of your best yet tbh.
Who could do a spoken word tour? Nick Lowe would 'smash it', to use a ghastly modern phrase. Looking forward greatly to hearing the new record.
Nick name checks The Creation - Phillips & Pickett wrote Teacher Teacher which was recorded by Rockpile. He also mentions terrific 60's Mod band The Fleur De Lys. To have only been able to see these bands in the 60's.
Fleur De Lys tracks have popped up on Jimmy Page sessions / VA discs, he was the on-call guitar wizard for Pye label recordings at the time.
@@thomosburn8740 Page was laying sessions for Immediate, but Phil Sawyer played guitar on the Fleur tracks during his tenure with the band.
Please, Mr Lowe, write a memoir!!!
have you written a book yet, Nick ?? If not, about time....I saw Rockpile in Brighton years ago - what a band...
Me Too , at Top Rank about 1978 .
Some musicians are actually pretty decent folk, humble, down to earth 😊
Surrender to the Rhythm....you can't go wrong. From a major fan in San Francisco.
Ah, tremendous, well done for winkling out Nick Lowe.
7 pints of Kaliber - a world record at that time no doubt!
Had that right about any non-alcohol (.003%) brew being terrible. I don't know if they taste any better these days.
Loved the Nick Lowe/Paul Carrack/Andy Fairweather Low performance at Glastonbury a few years ago
Top yarns!
The Six Bells in Brentford have a small part in me living here in Brisbane Australia, as there was a yacht from Brisbane in Brentford Dock for a long time. Did I see Brinsley Schwarz at the White Swan In Twickenham? ...When bands were "on" the resident Old English sheepdog often did not bother to find his way around people standing enjoying the music, but tried to pass straight between the legs! Great entertainment. ps I always play "All Men Are Liars" to the women I get to know.
Yes a Book would be great, Nick got that great British dry humour.
Top bloke
Actually "Cruel To Be Kind" wasn't his only bona fide hit, "I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass" charted higher
That’s the title for Nicks book Highs and Lowe , or Lowe and High
Great!
One of my favorite bassplayers.
🖖
The cadenza bass riff on Breaking Glass puts him into the top 3 (IMHO)
Kippington lodge fab
He's playing two different venues near Boston AT THE SAME TIME Oct 17th!!!! 😂
Re The Creation- there's a version of Creation w/a bowing Guitarist who Jimmy Page never acknowledges & I think it's the same as the Creation w/ Terry Reid. No? Bless Nick Lowe, now I've to figure out how to get in the SF Show soon.
Gordon Haskell was in Fleur De Lys
Los Straightjackets enjoy your Music & X's from their Origins re Gene Vincent's Later Guitar Player Billy Zoom.🎼
Ask Nick about the song he wrote about Rick Astley…rhymes with ghastly….as sung to me in the Punch House Monmouth many years ago it was never released.😂
It was released.
@@bengerson7064 ah I didn’t know that…
Yes it’s called “All Men Are Liars”
Somebody once told me David Bowie's album Low was a concept album about Nick Lowe.
If you don't already know this, you might be amused to know that Nick Lowe returned the compliment by releasing an EP titled 'Bowi'
@@johngraves8142haha good to know
What? I thought it was about Arthur.
Yeah right 😂 it's a concept about Eventide Harmonizers and Gated Reverb and how they were tyrannical to Nick Lowe's career!
😂 Sure mate! 😂
Dear Nick Lowe: Is it true that you auditioned for Genesis in 1975, didn't get the job, and later made some highly negative remarks about that band? Thank you.
Repent for Nick died for your sins ! Nick Lowe once bought me a drink! Ole Basher there you're go!
