- In the last few weeks, the suggestion that the Covid virus emerged from a lab in Wuhan instead of the wild has gone from 'fringe conspiracy theory', to 'possibility' to 'most likely explanation' for many mainstream media outlets.
At the same time, the way that the 'consensus' position was created and defended has been laid bare.
This is a hugely important story that touches on many of the topics we've covered on Rebel Wisdom, the problems of Sensemaking, the manipulation of the information landscape by powerful actors, and the value of decentralised collective intelligence as an alternative sensemaking force.

This was never conspiracy….it was on the differential from the beginning . Our legacy media ( for lack of a better term) and our politicians are horrifying .
Just for the record, sometimes conspiracies happen. So it's possible that X was a conspiracy theory, and X was correct.

Rebel Wisdom is again on point. You are doing precious work by providing us understanding of important and complex topics, in such a way that teaches us how not to get led astray by misinformation among the many things. Kudos!
David, thank you so much for being a real journalist. There are so few people who are as thorough and open-minded as you.
It's hard to know how to encapsulate this, so people really get it. I like to say that certain stories diagnose the system. That is, you watch some system grapple with something. It actually reveals what it is made of and designed to do.
And, the system...by that I mean The Press, the Social Media platforms, the Academics who study Virology or Epidemiology. All of these things, got this story upside down....and the fact of it was not even especially well hidden. That is why I took a risk with my reputation, and came out with the strong possibility that this was a lab leak. I was very careful to say it was a hypothesis, and it still remains a hypothesis as far as I'm concerned. But, this WAS visible.
Increasingly, that system...which misleads people....it dresses itself in scientific garb....it uses the authority of government regulatory apparatus....it silences people who disagree with it on the internet. THAT system is about something, and it isn't about us....right?
What is IS about, we can speculate on, but, the lab leak hypothesis story tells you, that the system that says 'follow the science'...isn't doing science...and it isn't interested in you following science.
What it IS interested in, is borrowing that authority to lead you into following FALSE BELIEFS.

American youtuber, laowhy86 who lived in China for 10 years, speaks Chinese, married to a Chinese woman doctor with contacts all over China has been reporting on this since Dec of 2019. It has been fascinating watching how this has unfolded on both sides of the world.
In his video comment section, was where I learned 2 Chinese virology professors at Havard were arrested in January 2020. I had to read it on the CIA press release website no one was reporting on it..

If the RNA does not show evidence of being in a lab the entire debate is moot and somewhat irresponsible. Part of sense making is understanding that not all questions are worth pursuit.

I've been saying since day one that it was released accidently or otherwise from the Wuhan lab. Oh and yes I did get called a conspiracy theorist but not by everyone.
Wasn't there a story at the time that an underpaid security guard at the lab was selling animals from the lab to wet markets?

Fantastic piece of work guys. If this proves to be correct then the potential repercussions for scientific research are very damaging. More oversight will mean more money to the bureaucracy and less to actual research.

I remember last year being pretty much horrified to hear John Vervaeke disregard the lab leak as conspitorial thinking... I remember the shock I felt at his assuredness... I wonder what he thinks now?
Oh, I hadn't heard him say that (can you share a link?) but assuming he did, this would be a great chance to understand how people working with good faith can be confidently wrong. An awesome opportunity for a Sensemaking show.
I shall certainly try - I've listened to a hell of a lot of Vervaeke - and it was a mere few seconds... So I'm thinking it would prove timely and difficult to find. It was a conversation between John and Jordan Hall; perhaps even on the topic of conspitorial thinking. It might be weeks or months but when I find it by God I'll send my proof with time stamps. I left a comment asking why they weren't following the logos in this particular instance, whereas in every other topic they seem to follow arguments where they lead - through reason. I was confused as it seemed to me to follow, that a least there's a high possibility of the COVID-19 virus that originated in Wuhan, coming the Covid virologly lab in Wuhan : that have been carrying out gain of function research there. I was like - what am I missing? They never even entertained the thought, just brushed it aside as irrelevant conspitorial thinking brought about by negative cognitive bias. The relevance realsisation that occured to me made the contextual information above - as regards Wuhan super saliant. But it could well be bullshit - we'll never get a an investigation out of China though, and this obfuscation makes me lean more towards lab leak.
Anyway it might be a while but I'll post here when I find it

If it is from a lab perhaps they want to suppress that info as it could therefore have a huge impact on how people will potentially view the vaccine which is therefore made of a hyper virus from a lab.

Sensemaking regarding the lab leak -
China may be finding nuclear weapons a challenge to develop, for whatever reason -- possibly they believe some of the Lessons Learned from the collapse of the USSR involve Chernobyl and the arms race. So, they're pursuing biological WMD instead.
Various three-letter-acronyms may be unwilling to risk the sort of public outrage that might arise, if the Chinese are blamed. Now that it's undeniable, The Narrative (TM) is trying to get out ahead of it.
I've been following this channel for a few years now. I am subscribed and I am a member and I only came across this because I went on the channel to look for it. I typed in "Rebel Wisdom Lab Leak" and nothing appears. It's mad that at this stage the story is still being suppressed despite it being the most obvious theory.
The point this story needed to make, but didn't quite get to, was that in a world propelled by cancel culture (frequently with more caprice than clue), conspiracies are going to originate to defend reputations, even when those defending their reputations never did anything wrong in the first place. In this toxic public discourse environment, one can't automatic trace guilty behaviour to final explanation.
To summarize: there is no debate because the Anti-Lab Leak side refuses to have one and refuses to explain the fundamental problems or missteps that they see the Lab Leak side making in their compelling analysis.
Oh and have a watch/listen to the UK Column News program..recently deplatformed by UA-cam...so go to their website...3 News programs weekly. Excellent information in my opinion which is from me a nobody just someone who had the intuitive feeling that the whole "pandemic" felt off....

I'm pretty sure TWIV is one of the foremost podcasts on virology, and have had Peter Daszak on it as well who is the architect of the anti lab leak position.

I understand resources are limited, but since it’s not only a hot but also a very dangerous topic (thinking of anti-Chinese hate as well as the intensifying build up to a cold/ hot war scenario) I would have really appreciated if you’d tried harder to show the “other side“; because in this case showing multiple sides is also a sign of good science, despite showing a real effort not to only push a certain narrative.
I think “the other side” already got a whole year of exposure with no redeeming evidence, there are plenty of previous podcasts and MSM reports to refer back to.
I am interested in what cleverer people than me think about horses as a possible zoonotic origin since there were so many in Wuhan for the military games,along with thousands of people, of course.
What does this mean about the safety of the vaccine? It is all so confusing, and is making me second guess myself and doubt my decisions.
It doesn't directly have any bearing on their safety, but given that our establishment institutions have been at best, totally disingenuous around the lab leak hypothesis, it would indicate that they are not being totally forthcoming about the safety profile, and necessity of the vaccines and the necessity of mass vaccination.

Re: Eric Weinstein talking about consensus vs math. Math is the only thing that is not subjective. 2+3=5. That's why I love math. Therefore, when talking about things that happened, everything is subjective. Two people who experience the same event, can have very different stories, and they are all true. Comparing the lab leak theory to math is like comparing oranges to airplanes.
I'm a bit dismayed as to how little views these particular videos have received. I hope this changes.

We are still in the pandemic and western society hasn't ruled out the lab leak theory. Is this not a victory for sensemaking? If the story was buried and ignored for 5, 10 or 50 years I could accept what Bret is saying, but it hasn't.

I ended up going online to a frontline Doctor, got the prescription. Within 24 hours after my first dose age, my pain was reduced by 50%.

In order to become a "credible scientist" one has to become part of The System by which time your career and reputation depends on not rocking the boat too much. And a scientist who is not associated with any institution isn't really a scientist at all, he's just a private individual with a qualification. He's no longer "doing science" as such.

perhaps study virology more so, instead of being in the middle ground of assumptions, Vincent is short with you ‘because’ you are a poor student of understanding how a virus functions, and how efficacy works better from nature than an untested man made attempt, strange how even DNA manipulation is like taking a bulldozer into a china shop to select good solid and reliable results.
For a doctorate study to design the program of virology studied today, one is looking at Vincent, for a study that didn’t exist before his excitement to create it and help those across the world to explore these discoveries.
In short, with today’s tec, we are not capable to create much under an electron microscope, that will replicate anything close to the millions of variants required to make a ‘new’ and useful man made model. Each new variant discovered is labelled and dated, as explained in many of Vincents shows, but that would take time to watch as he constantly has new guests, just as rebel wisdom, to explore as widely as possible the reasons behind doing the science under oath of discovery, not destruction.
Just as astronauts, this is a world of searching for more solutions to disease, not a place that has time for doing anything else. Immunity to disease is another show Vincent would encourage anyone to watch, there are no secrets to exploring, that is what makes it exciting, although governments are not very supportive of true science exploration, so another angle one can see by watching his great zoom shows of frontline people.
If this was a military style idea, the money available would provide spectacular facilities, yet by watching front line scientists on zoom, they are not by any means living in luxury or endowed with the best labs available.
Money always talks when weaponized ideas such as suggested, play a role, it would be inaccessible to visit.

I referred to Occam's Razor from the beginning. Did it come from a lab nearby or some unevidenced, complex and improbable chain of bats, pangolins and humans? I know which one I gravitated towards. But I guess we will never really know for certain. Even if apparently credible evidence from a Chinese or other lab showed up I would still seriously question its provenance.
And where did the spanish flu come from? Also from a lab? Nature is a huge, complex, never stopping lab and "bio-factory" together. I also saw documentaries about scientists screening bats and other animals from the rainforests. They encounter new viruses all the time and try to document them, because they know, that the chance of one mutating to spread to other species is relatively normal.

You aren't getting pushback because "we're sure it's not a lab leak," we aren't. You're getting pushback because from day one people were freaking out and claiming that it "IS" a lab leak. We don't know that it "is" and we don't have any evidence that it "is." We understand that it "could be" and support efforts to find out. Most of us always have. You only get pushback because it has always been stated as a breathless, absolutist, "you're all sheeple" rant that never cited any evidence that we could sink teeth into. Brad himself has yet to do it. He may know his stuff when it comes to biology but his logical reasoning skills leave something to be desired. "Possible" is not "is" in any logical frame.
Parallel to all this we had people refusing to comply with best practices because "it's a hoax" and "it's a Chinese bioweapon" and "it's just a flu" and somehow all of these would be stated in one conversation by the same person. Somehow these people missed the fact that in any case, following the suggested safety precautions would still have been the best course of action while we move forward and more facts get figured out. I fully believe that if we had some of that Swedish unity of action, we would have gotten to the discussion at a rational pace. BUT WE'RE NOT A RATIONAL COUNTRY SO WHO'S FAULT IS THAT?
