Will Ohio traffic be bad after the April 8 solar eclipse? Here's what ODOT wants drivers to know

- Ohio is expecting a big increase in visitors who are coming to the sate to experience the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, with areas like Cleveland and Akron within the path of totality. But how bad will traffic actually be?
“I kind of equate this to a fireworks show," explains Matt Bruning of ODOT. "Everybody kind of trickles in and then the grand finale goes off and everyone gets in their cars at the same time and leaves. This is totally different than any other event you could even conceive. The 2016 RNC was a big deal, but that was confined to Cleveland. We’ve had World Series, we’ve had All-Star games, we’ve had other big events - but they’ve been confined to a city. This is literally multiple counties - tens of thousands of square miles of people all doing the same thing at the same time and then wanting to leave that same thing at the same time. That’s where we’re really concerned about having the big traffic congestion. That’s what we’ve heard from other states that experienced 2017 totality, is that traffic will be much, much worse than before.”

We can’t predict exactly where the sky will be clear…so how can we get where we want to go early? That’s what makes this whole thing such a wildcard!
People actually gotta work to....not everyone will be just standing out there.........
Exactly. Tourists diss ohio then want to flood the state because of an eclipse.
It will be like the day after Thanksgiving for workers. The offices will be ghost towns meaning not a lot of workers..
@@kurtwetzel154 so maybe we could use this as a regional strike?
Yes, traffic will be bad in areas where streets are shut down creating the traffic jams. duh. Just went up and down I-71 from Cleveland to Cincy last week: The interstate is a mess! That's an ODOT thing. We pay enough taxes on gasoline and elsewhere that the highways should be litter free, junk and dead animals picked up, and construction handled responsibly to avoid traffic issues. It's not like this is the first time I-71 south of Columbus has been under some kind of construction.
It took me 5 hours to drive 65 in Kentucky in 2017 (normally 2 hours). At least the weather was warm enough that we could turn off our cars to save gas. My advice is to stay overnight at your destination Monday night, too... if there is a room available.
i drive from st augistine to lorain Ohio in 14 hours..
Kentucky roads so bad and accidents so frequent it takes "hours" to get down 65 and 71. Mitch "Im Ur Bitch" McConnell sure hasn't been getting fed transportation $$ to Kentucky!
This is good information, thank you
I live in Ashland, left for Franklin KY at 3am, took 5 hours to get there. Once it was over, it took an hour just to get on I-65, then you could walk faster than the traffic flow going home. It took me 11 hours to get back, the sun had set and I was still on 65. I don't have 5 hours to drive this time around.
august 2003 was the blackout that covered the east of the US
This is About to be One Big 💩Show 🤦♂️
As only ohio can provide

Couldn't see it Dudley.
Asking people to use common sense........good luck with that! 😅
Your traffic isnt bad .What a joke ..
This is America for you. such a corny event.
Maybe being a stupid sports fan for you is better but this is where the silent majority of intelligent science minded Americans like to go to get together and experience the most epic thing they could see in their lives together. It was like the 80s again. People were sharing, generous and cooperative. Stick to your video games.
wow the sun wow the moon who cares
i do
people that arent turds
Tell me you’ve never seen totality without telling me you’ve never seen totality
I bet you're fun at parties.
