Is hand filing a chain saw the best? Maybe... MAYBE NOT!

  • Sharpening your chainsaw can be done a lot of ways ... some guys like to hand file ...others bench grind ...some use a rotary tool grinder...I don't care if you use a brick...as long as you can get it sharp and it cuts...GREAT! Sharp is sharp no matter the method. I hand filed for 30 years to sharpen my chains and now after 12 years or so of using a Dremel rotary tool and a Oregon stone bit to sharpen, I can accomplish the same sharpness either way but one way is 4-5 times as fast. Watch!

    Hello from Bavaria
First of all, I don't want to criticize you!!, but personally I don't think hand filing is bad, I like to do it to relax after I've finished working, I then sit down in the basement, put the chains on, put on some music and then file for relaxation, I find it like a kind of ritual or a kind of ASMR

I hand file when im at home, therapeutic to me. I enjoy making things sharp. When out cutting, I take extra chains, and a battery powered dremel tool ( as you mentioned ). If an emergency arises. To each his own. Whatever makes one 😊 happy.

Since I watched your video on using the Dremel, I ordered some bits. I have never been able to sharpen a saw. The Dremel works great and my saws are cutting better than ever and they stay sharp longer. I used to use a chain far too long before getting them sharpened. I hate cutting with a dull saw. Now I touch up my saws at the end of each day of cutting and am always cutting with a sharp chain. It is so much nicer. Thank you for that video,

With the firewood processor we have now, it has .404 chain so I bought an electric bench mount sharpener from Vevor and it works great to keep a consistent edge on the teeth. I took the chain off of my echo saw the other day and tried it on the electric sharpener and did it ever do a good job and brought that chain back to almost new! GNI.

    Your handsaw V chainsaw analogy?.
I was at our country show the other day, I was watching the woodchop events when the cross cut saw competition started. Those old boys with those cross cut saws were something to see! A 60cm (2 bananas) thick log ( Australian hardwood), the winners- 13 strokes of the cross cut, maybe 10 or 12 seconds? I reckon if I put my 60cc chainsaw up against them , I would be going home with my tail between my legs !

I used to use the original RotoZip tool before tge Dremel ... Dremel is a lot smaller and easier to handle.. I hand filed for 20 years and have used the electrical device since the 90's... Game changer
PS... That vice that Bert made is an absolute essential tool to have in your kit/truck.... so much easier to maneuver it instead of chasing the saw around .. It allows you to spin that chain and continue sharpening

Probably not, he does not do much with wood or outdoor work any more...he likes to walk with his dog mostly. I would like to maybe do an interview about he old times but he has almost no hearing any more and won't wear his aids so you have to yell to talk so....

Try the 'other' hand filing method: PFERD CHAINSHARP ( used by Stihl 2in1 ) for each chain type except skip, square, hex. Does BOTH edge and raker. I get no hat or shirt or commission. 😁Good job for a pro.

@@iffykidmn8170 I use the same tool, both versions for different saws. They are not adjustable but all 3 files are replaceable. By 3 files I mean; the 2 round files as well as the square file used for the rackers. Hope this helps. 👍🏻

@@iffykidmn8170 NO. The depth gauge/raker is set at .025 for both. Goldilocks setting for most, not for pros needing more adjustment for soft vs hard woods. For my harvesting 6-8 cords hardwood/year and sruce/fir trail clearing it has served for my saws. Good question.

I'm a big fan of the progressive raker gage. For those learning to file, I'd suggest trying the husqvarna roller gauge to help learn the correct angles but also file some more out of the gullet so chips will flow. A good sharpening job will be at least as good or better than new out of the b9x
