This video will likely help me alot. I have a habit of picking my fruit early (im also 17) but concord grapes may be one, i also like eating them before their ripe, i like the sour.

Truthfully, it's a matter of preference. They're wonderful light red, dark red, light purple, dark purple, covered in the white waxy substances, or only just barely there... There are plenty of health benefits to slightly under ripe grapes.

So do you wait to harvest the entire cluster after ALL grapes have turned the right color? The grapes that have already turned purple, will they go bad or is it ok to wait for all on the cluster to turn purple? First-timer here! Are you saying that even after all grapes on the cluster have turned purple that it can stay on the vine another 2 weeks to sweeten? Help!

Yes! You wait for the entire cluster of all the grapes on the vine to turn purple. If you taste-test them at that time, they probably will still not be that sweet. Their sugar content will develop further in about two weeks and they will feel plump and juicy. Taste-test again, and harvest them before they begin to be overripe and shrivel, and before birds, squirrels, and raccoons begin to sample the grapes. Pick them and enjoy your harvest!

@@gardenstead The birds are eating them as soon as they turn a reddish color and long before tuning deep purple.

@@gardensteadI'm having the same question. About 60% of a bunch is deep dark purple and very sweet. Still waiting for the rest to ripen but I'm afraid of losing the ones that are seemingly already very ripe. Will the ripe ones hold out for another month?

I just have to say I disagree. People want to have that "perfect" sugary preserve or jam, but picking when some of the group of grapes are light red, while the rest are dark purple is fine. There are even high health benefits to grapes that are just slightly under ripe, they have more antioxidants! Sure, you may end up with gentle variance in the flavor of one's jams or preserves, but you can simply compensate with honey. It is not necessary to wait until every single grape is ashed over and dark purple. This is far too OCD for my liking.

Mine is deep coloured and waxy, and with tan/brownish seeds, but still sour. Should I just harvest them before the birds get them?

The time to harvest Concord grapes is when they are sweet. Keep tasting them until they are no longer sour. They take between 1 and 3 weeks to reach sweetness after they have turned purple.
