- The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.
Terry Labonte bookended his career with a win in the 2003 Southern 500.
Another great race! Thanks for the upload!
18:20 Petty was THROUGH. You know he's a complete hard ass, too, and to see him in that shape, you know things were hellish.
Superb image quality
So amazing

I Like 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo And 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Iconic Generation 2 Most Beautiful Car In My Opinion NASCAR History Thanks For Uploading
so beautiful. 6-7 feet….the most important 6-7 feet in the race, so beautiful. It was so doggone sweet to FINALLY see SOMEONE BREAK THROUGH on tv after 11 years of watching nascar. A vibe was slooowly taking shape that guys like Elliott,Rusty Wallace, Gant, Ruud, LaBonte were going to break through but i had to wait for ESPN and Morgan Sheppard down the road…and Ron Bouchard in a race i didnt get to actually see him win lol before the metamorphosis reoccured and picked up steam
23:45. It wouldnt be too many years later before they called that turn 3 switcheroonie move the “patented Earnhardt move. Now you we see where he learned it….
*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1980 SOUTHERN 500 (23 of 31):*
#2 Dale Earnhardt (3310 points with 3 wins, Chevrolet)
#11 Cale Yarborough (-23 with 4 wins, Chevrolet)
#43 Richard Petty (-113 with 2 wins, Chevrolet)
#27 Benny Parsons (-216 with 2 wins, Chevrolet)
#88 Darrell Waltrip (-261 with 4 wins, Chevrolet)
#15 Bobby Allison (-376 with 2 wins, Ford)
#90 Jody Ridley (-541, Chevrolet)
#3 Richard Childress (-610, Chevrolet)
Despite his great 1979 season, Joe Millikan (Chevrolet) had to scale down to a partial schedule for 1980 and even became Petty’s relief driver after he got injured in the Pocono 500. Part-timer Buddy Baker (Chevrolet) won the Daytona 500 and the Alabama 500, Neil Bonnett won the Pocono 500 and the Talladega 500 while David Pearson won the Rebel 500 after taking over the Chevrolet #1 Donnie Allison used to race..
Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Darlington’s case, the Spring race was the Rebel 500 while the Labor day one was the Southern 500.
What a Super Treat to have this race documented on video(!!!) 🙂. We can do without the dumb banjo music 😖.
Watching that, who would have thought that Terry Labonte would become a future two-time Cup champion, and his little brother Bobby would become a Cup champion too.
I want to know less about Chris Economaki's Bermuda shorts and more about that shirt Dick Beaty was wearing. WTF?
The holy grail of NASCAR race uploads #IYKYK
Jim Lampley doing NASCAR?! That’s incredible.
He did the 1984 Firecracker 400 too
8:30 Cale realizes “my butt is burning.”
Man, these races are such a time warp to a better time.
Texas Terry
Hellava race 🏁 😎 Dale in the 2 car it's a good looking car
Want a finish. Good job to Terry Labonte on his 1st career win
Dr 3-21-24
Terry Labonte's first ever win
🏁Very cool, really enjoyed!!!!!!!🏁
is this Sam Poseys debut? I watched Ponono 1980 last night and Jackie Stewart was accusing Neil Bonnet of skullduggery for using entire straightaway to hold off Mr. Baker and the #11 car while Mr. Economacki enthusiastically endorsed Mr. Bonnets efforts. I agree with Mr. Economacki and im wondering if that, in effect, resulted in the change. If so they replaced one road racer with another and, in spite of Mr. Stewarts call for clean driving and sportsmanship where grit was needed lol i still prefer Mr. Stewart and it aint even close. I believe Mr. Earnhardt would have agreed, he never punched Mr. Stewart in the nose like he did Mr. Posey years later after Mr. Posey asked him a question about…clean driving at Atlanta 😂.
Earnhardt punched Posey?
@@blackpagan100 Posey admitted as such on ABC sports Atlanta broadcast, yes. Pretty sure it was one of Mr. Sheppards wins there. Ill try and track it down for ya, hilarious stuff listening to Posey snivel.
I agree
WOW! Alot of Montes entered and winning.
The color i enjoyed, well done.
