You'll definitely get confused as a first timer to watch a LOOΠΔ video if you are not aware in their concept. This video (Paint the Town) is lore-heavy video. As mentioned from some the other comments, LOOΠΔ have a story-plot which started to build in since 2016 (LOOΠΔVERSE). So you need to check all their pre-debut stuff until to their previous comeback (Why Not?) to grasp what is going on in this video. Its a lot of tasks but this will make you love more LOOΠΔ as a group and artist as their sound/music is so much different compared to the other groups out there.
as briefly as i can, members and some lore summary: the girl with the planets revolving around her is heejin, smoke lantern is hyunjin, phoenix/burning wings is haseul, the opening rap part is yeojin, vivi only appears very briefly (😭) in the ‘you kill it you own it’ part with the deer antlers. heejin, hyunjin, haseul & vivi make up the subunit loona 1/3. in the lore heejin is god, she created colour and she created the other girls. vivi is an android. red eye girl (in the opening) is kim lip, girl with the blue light ring is jinsoul, girl with the purple light ring is choerry. these three make up odd eye circle. they each have an ‘odd eye’ hence the glowing coloured rings both in the mv and in their eyes. this represents the fact they also have powers; kim lip’s is time travel, jinsoul’s is space travel (basically teleportation), and choerry’s is dimensional travel (so she plays a pretty big role in connecting the subunits, or at least a pretty big role in connecting certain members to each other). the opening is also a nod to kim lip’s solo mv ‘eclipse’! denim outfit (and the girl you asked ‘who’s she?’ to) is yves, the girl with the long flowy dress is chuu, the brown haired girl in the first hallway scene (the ‘wanna be the cool kid? uh huh’ part) is gowon, and wolf/drum girl is olivia hye. these four make up loona yyxy. the ‘loonaverse’ as its called resides on the mobius strip; a one sided shape in an infinite loop. there are three parts to it. earth (where 1/3 reside, representing growth & light), purgatory/middle earth (odd eye circle, representing life & knowledge), and eden (yyxy, representing decay & darkness). each girl also has her own colour, animal, and in yyxy’s case fruit! these all play into the lore too, whether it’s linking different girls to each other or hinting at who killed vivi ^^ their lore is super expansive & some of the girls often say it’s something they’re proud of as they feel it gives them more charm :) PLUS their sound is super diverse, so you should definitely check out more of their music! you don’t need the lore to enjoy the sound 🥰
It's really hard to dive into a loona mv without any knowledge about the basic lore beforehand. Especially in this mv which is their most lore-heavy mv to date. Yes, in did, there is a huge storyline behind this MV, the LOONAVERSE, restarted by the Odd Eye Circle (OEC), second subunit of LOONA, that can travel between the three worlds that form the LOONAVERSE. But, in brief, this story took place in the moon, and they are ‘taking to the moon’ to redefine themselves by breaking the established rules to ‘Paint The Town’ in LOONA’s colors because each of them has a distinctive color, but also a representative animal ‘Like a wolf to the moon’ said by Olivia Hye, who also hits the big drum, left her trace in the sand at 1:49, and growls at 2:03. The girl on black starting the second chorus is Yves (Eve) leader of the third subunit called yyxy. The first and last girls on red and blue skirts are KimLip and JinSoul, members of OEC.

I heard someone who doesn't know the Loona lore much describe them as "The Sailor Moon of kpop" That's about as simple as I could put it myself outside of rattling off lore for 2 hours.
Loona has an ongoing storyline in their mvs. The storyline is very complex and still quite open to interpretation as not a lot gets confirmed or is overly obvious.

€8272[£8[2{£[281]£\2]£[82 YOU DID A LOONA REACTION **malfunctions in deobit (deobi + orbit)** 8:26 that happens to be the loml chuu (she actually invented the biting heart, and is well known for it) this might be a little confusing but i’ll try to make it simple; loona is a 12 membered girl group, with 3 subunits namely loona 1/3, ODD EYE CIRCLE, and yyxy (pronounced why why by why, full form youth youth by young) and every member has a solo song and bside. in korean, their name is idarui sonyeo which means girl of the month, referring to how each of them had a solo debut every month before debuting together as a group. the first girl, heejin, debuted in october 2016 with her solo ViVid. the rest of the girls in order of debut are hyunjin , haseul, yeojin, vivi, kim lip, jinsoul, choerry (pronounced cherry), yves (pronounced eve), chuu, gowon, and olivia hye. heejin, hyunjin, haseul and vivi make up the subunit loona 1/3 (no, i didn’t forget yeojin, i’ll get to her later) kim lip, jinsoul and choerry make up ODD EYE CIRCLE and yves, chuu, gowon, and olivia hye make up yyxy. each subunit also has a mini album and promoted for a short while. yeojin is said to be the / in 1/3 but she never promoted with them, and is usually singled out of the subunits when BBC (their company) describe their mvs (like “1/3, odd eye circle, yyxy AND YEOJIN”). it’s probably due to the fact that yeojin was 14-15 around the time she debuted and wasn’t allowed to promote with the subunit due to child labor laws so they incorporated that into the lore :) (to make it clear, none of the members promoted for their singles, only subunits) in 2018, loona debuted as a 12 member group with Hi High. loona (as you said) DOES actually have a lore that they’ve building, ever since heejin debuted in 2016. we call that lore the LOONAVERSE. it’s super complex, so i suggest watching Loona: The Avengers Of Kpop because it’s a great introduction to them and their storyline (it doesn’t go into the members personally but it helps you figure out most of the stuff about loona) if you plan to watch loona’s mvs in order, start from heejins solo mv and go memberwise and subunit wise. to answer your question, yes there is a story,, some have already commented on it, but the project started back in 2016, with each member releasing a solo song with an mv and a VERY mini album along with it (theres only twoo songs in their respective ep/album),, after a set amount of girls debuted with their solos,, they started to promote as sub-units, and there are three in total, loona 1/3, loona odd eye circle and loona yyxy and then finally they debuted as 12 in 2018,,, they each have a color and an animal, and the latter members have fruits that represent them as well but don't worry about figuring out the lore and the story for the first time,, some orbits don't even delve into the lore,, as asian theory says, you don't need to know the lore to enjoy loona,, but it is an added bonus when you get to it

You'll definitely get confused as a first timer to watch a LOOΠΔ video if you are not aware in their concept. This video (Paint the Town) is lore-heavy video. As mentioned from some the other comments, LOOΠΔ have a story-plot which started to build in since 2016 (LOOΠΔVERSE). So you need to check all their pre-debut stuff until to their previous comeback (Why Not?) to grasp what is going on in this video. Its a lot of tasks but this will make you love more LOOΠΔ as a group and artist as their sound/music is so much different compared to the other groups out there.
also, this song is described to have “bollywood elements” which makes me super happy as a desi orbit and i find it super cool :]
as briefly as i can, members and some lore summary:
the girl with the planets revolving around her is heejin, smoke lantern is hyunjin, phoenix/burning wings is haseul, the opening rap part is yeojin, vivi only appears very briefly (😭) in the ‘you kill it you own it’ part with the deer antlers. heejin, hyunjin, haseul & vivi make up the subunit loona 1/3. in the lore heejin is god, she created colour and she created the other girls. vivi is an android.
red eye girl (in the opening) is kim lip, girl with the blue light ring is jinsoul, girl with the purple light ring is choerry. these three make up odd eye circle. they each have an ‘odd eye’ hence the glowing coloured rings both in the mv and in their eyes. this represents the fact they also have powers; kim lip’s is time travel, jinsoul’s is space travel (basically teleportation), and choerry’s is dimensional travel (so she plays a pretty big role in connecting the subunits, or at least a pretty big role in connecting certain members to each other). the opening is also a nod to kim lip’s solo mv ‘eclipse’!
denim outfit (and the girl you asked ‘who’s she?’ to) is yves, the girl with the long flowy dress is chuu, the brown haired girl in the first hallway scene (the ‘wanna be the cool kid? uh huh’ part) is gowon, and wolf/drum girl is olivia hye. these four make up loona yyxy.
the ‘loonaverse’ as its called resides on the mobius strip; a one sided shape in an infinite loop. there are three parts to it. earth (where 1/3 reside, representing growth & light), purgatory/middle earth (odd eye circle, representing life & knowledge), and eden (yyxy, representing decay & darkness). each girl also has her own colour, animal, and in yyxy’s case fruit! these all play into the lore too, whether it’s linking different girls to each other or hinting at who killed vivi ^^
their lore is super expansive & some of the girls often say it’s something they’re proud of as they feel it gives them more charm :) PLUS their sound is super diverse, so you should definitely check out more of their music! you don’t need the lore to enjoy the sound 🥰

Yes, in did, there is a huge storyline behind this MV, the LOONAVERSE, restarted by the Odd Eye Circle (OEC), second subunit of LOONA, that can travel between the three worlds that form the LOONAVERSE.
But, in brief, this story took place in the moon, and they are ‘taking to the moon’ to redefine themselves by breaking the established rules to ‘Paint The Town’ in LOONA’s colors because each of them has a distinctive color, but also a representative animal ‘Like a wolf to the moon’ said by Olivia Hye, who also hits the big drum, left her trace in the sand at 1:49, and growls at 2:03.
The girl on black starting the second chorus is Yves (Eve) leader of the third subunit called yyxy.
The first and last girls on red and blue skirts are KimLip and JinSoul, members of OEC.

this might be a little confusing but i’ll try to make it simple;
loona is a 12 membered girl group, with 3 subunits namely loona 1/3, ODD EYE CIRCLE, and yyxy (pronounced why why by why, full form youth youth by young) and every member has a solo song and bside. in korean, their name is idarui sonyeo which means girl of the month, referring to how each of them had a solo debut every month before debuting together as a group.
the first girl, heejin, debuted in october 2016 with her solo ViVid. the rest of the girls in order of debut are hyunjin , haseul, yeojin, vivi, kim lip, jinsoul, choerry (pronounced cherry), yves (pronounced eve), chuu, gowon, and olivia hye.
heejin, hyunjin, haseul and vivi make up the subunit loona 1/3 (no, i didn’t forget yeojin, i’ll get to her later) kim lip, jinsoul and choerry make up ODD EYE CIRCLE and yves, chuu, gowon, and olivia hye make up yyxy. each subunit also has a mini album and promoted for a short while.
yeojin is said to be the / in 1/3 but she never promoted with them, and is usually singled out of the subunits when BBC (their company) describe their mvs (like “1/3, odd eye circle, yyxy AND YEOJIN”). it’s probably due to the fact that yeojin was 14-15 around the time she debuted and wasn’t allowed to promote with the subunit due to child labor laws so they incorporated that into the lore :) (to make it clear, none of the members promoted for their singles, only subunits)
in 2018, loona debuted as a 12 member group with Hi High. loona (as you said) DOES actually have a lore that they’ve building, ever since heejin debuted in 2016. we call that lore the LOONAVERSE. it’s super complex, so i suggest watching Loona: The Avengers Of Kpop because it’s a great introduction to them and their storyline (it doesn’t go into the members personally but it helps you figure out most of the stuff about loona)
if you plan to watch loona’s mvs in order, start from heejins solo mv and go memberwise and subunit wise. (you should probably do this after watching that loona intro video tho lol)

to answer your question, yes there is a story,, some have already commented on it, but the project started back in 2016, with each member releasing a solo song with an mv and a VERY mini album along with it (theres only twoo songs in their respective ep/album),, after a set amount of girls debuted with their solos,, they started to promote as sub-units, and there are three in total, loona 1/3, loona odd eye circle and loona yyxy and then finally they debuted as 12 in 2018,,, they each have a color and an animal, and the latter members have fruits that represent them as well
but don't worry about figuring out the lore and the story for the first time,, some orbits don't even delve into the lore,, as asian theory says, you don't need to know the lore to enjoy loona,, but it is an added bonus when you get to it

everything about the video that made you confused, it's part of the loonaverse! when i tell you this is the most difficult, confusing and amazing storyline a kpop group have ever done, it's out of this world (literally since their concept revolves around the moon). loona is not the typical group, they are very unique and definitely a sound u never heard in kpop! i recommend going on a journey with them, you will not regret it i promise. loona a 12 member group and every member can stand up on their own as each of them debuted every month with own song and album! you have TONS of content and music awaiting for you~ welcome to the loonaverse!!!
