Heritage Rough Rider Rancher- Revolver Range Review

  • The Rancher is Heritage's first "Long Gun" and is reminiscent of the revolving carbines of the mid to late 1800s. Based on their popular Rough rider single action revolver pistols, this low cost revolving carbine is accurate, affordable and easy to maintain. The Rancher comes with a checkered walnut stock, and a leather sling but only one cylinder chambered in .22 LR. The Rancher can fire Shorts, Longs and Long Rifle ammo and will accept the .22 magnum used in other 6 shot Heritage Revolvers.

      I really like to see you do a video of a .32 Rough Rider or Ruger SSM. For that matter, since small calibers are part of your thing, I'd like to see ANY of the .32s, .32 S&W, S&W Long, H&R Magnum, .327 Federal, .32 ACP, or either of the .32 Colts, if you could find them. I've owned, fired and handloaded all those calibers but the .327, and they're a lot of fun.
      Then there are the .31 cap & ball black powder pocket revolvers, and also the guys recreating the .32 Rimfires using modified centerfire cases and blank charges (kind of scary, but yes, it is a thing and it seems to work).

    Great review very informative. I just wanted to say that I did purchase this rifle before watching this post over much debate on which single action 22lr I wanted to buy. I am very happy with the rifle it shoots very well both in the 22lr and the 22 WMR calibers. Everything about this rifle is quite unique. It is well built . The fit and finish is very good. The combination of a really kool rifle and the price can not be beat. I recommend this rifle to anyone who has the desire or need to own it. One thing I would like to share. Is when I was firing this rifle I put my support hand underneath the back of the stock near the sling swivel and my firing hand in a support position at the grip. I utilized the trigger guard hook as support for my firing hand. I found this position very accommodating. I could move my face further away from the cylinder flash and a much better support position and line of sight to fire from both at the bench sitting and standing unsupported firing positions. With practice this firing method is the way to go. Your keeping your support hand away from that cylinder flash as well. Just thought this might help someone in deciding whether or not to purchase. Lever action rifles in comparison do have rounds in the magazine as an advantage. Yet we all know what has to be done to reload the tube magazine vs the six round cylinder. Both the lever and revolver rifles are single action. One real advantage the cylinder has over the lever is you don't have to move all those parts to fire the rifle. You just haver to pull the hammer back and fire. Lever action 22lr is just that. Not a combination 22lr and 22 WMR of both with just a cylinder change. These cylinder's are very available at the Heritage web site in many different types, colors, engraving's. The 6 cylinder vs the 9 cylinder weapons are not interchangeable. 6 to 6 and 9 to 9. Hope this didn't get to long I just felt that you all should know.

    I think there was a TV series way back in the 90s entitled Lazarus which was portrayed by the late Robert Urich. In one episode, he used a Colt revolving carbine. I liked the rifle so I bought one, a brand new Uberti revolving carbine in .45 Colt with an 18 inch barrel and fixed sights. I sold it later when I retired because .45 Colt ammunition were getting to be more expensive to shoot. Good thing I saw your video and found out that Heritage came out with a .22 version. I will definitely get one soon. Thank you.

      I really want to pick up one of the Uberti revolving carbines! When I started doing Cowboy action shooting, I picked up a couple revolvers and a rifle in .38/.357 because of the price of the .45 ammo. Hey I really liked your video, it was very well put together. The only thing was that you let the hammer forward from the half cock position, this is a BIG NO for single action revolvers as it can mess up the timing leaving a groove on the cylinder. The proper procedure for laying the hammer down from any position is always to cock it all the way back before lowering it so the complete cycle of the action can occur. Just a friendly tip. Keep up the good videos!

    It wasn’t easy to find but I was able to track one of these down & I’m glad I bought it because it’s a fun little carbine revolver to shoot with both the 22LR & 22WMR cylinders. The only cons were some scratches on the barrel where it looks like whoever installed the barrel sling mount didn’t know what they were doing. The finish isn’t great either but considering how long I waited to find one & then how long it took KYGUNCO to ship it I got over it quickly once it was in my hands 😆.

No pain no deformation on the skin. The range master was watching my grip and said he knew how and what was going on. We were carrying some hot fiocche .357. I was getting tattooed with lead that was shearing off on the forcing cone! I corrected my grip and the embedded lead pieces eventually went away.

    Has Heritage said that the .22WMR can be shot out of the Rancher with the .22WMR cylinder? I assume that it could be I just have not seen anywhere that Heritage has said that. I have a Rough Rider that I bought with both cylinders and putting the .22WMR cylinder in a Rancher to complement the RR would really be cool! Also, one of the more iconic revolving rifles was carried by "Bull" Harris as played by Arthur Hunnicutt in 1966's "El Dorado" with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. He carried an 1855 Colt Revolving Carbine.

    Hmm, so holding the barrel area is always a bad idea for any revolving carbine...? My favorite weapon of the Civil War is the Colt 1855 Revolving Carbine, and the engineer in me was looking at this Heritage Rancher and was screaming at me to fashion a custom wooden handguard for it, along with an extended ejector (so the handle can stick out of the handguard) made out of aluminum rather than the original plastic. But if it's dangerous to do so, I guess that's that project scrapped.

    • @SmallCaliberArmsReview
      @SmallCaliberArmsReview  4 роки тому +2

      The Rossi Circuit Judge has a fore end on it and is a revolving carbine, there is a "Shield" to prevent your arm from getting hit by anything ejected out of the cylinder gap. It can and has been done, but I think it takes away from the look of the rifle.

    I am from Merrie England for my sins. Back in the seventies there was a similar looking revolver available in the sporting (gun) press. It had a long barrel to comply with shotgun laws, it was calibred in only 9mm for shotgun use, thus making it more a rat gun than anything. From memory, I think it may well have had only a standard SA type butt. I tried looking for one some years back, but I got nowhere in tracking it down, so I guess they never caught on...!!!
