  • Get flocked! Flocking is a great way to add a bit of pizzazz and luxury to boxes, and while its not a difficult thing to do, there is a bit of a trick to it.
In this video, I go through what flocking is, the best ways to apply it, and how to repair.

What type of box related content do you want to see next? Dovetails? Box joints? Exposed domino joinery?

Finger joint boxes video would be great but if it can be done by using metric measurements.
It is probably something very simple to do for some but to be honest there aren't many video that explain it all in metric measurements, most are using imperial measurements due to their imperial dado stacks.
I am sure that you would cover it all from all angles and give recommendations on finger sizes according to the thickness of the material from your personal experience.
Your videos are always very informative and great for people with all skill levels.
Big 👍 and please keep up the great work.

Hand Cut Dovetail boxes, and trays to make the boxes useful as a jewellery box or something like that.

Trays and stuff to go in the box would be cool to see. I have yet to build anything for the insides of my boxes lol.

I'm working on some moxon vise kits and stuff, and with that I'll be building a new moxon vise specifically for dovetailing, so I think I'll wait until after I've got the vise built before dovetailing! :)

I remember a mate's research journey to discover and find materials for flocking some damaged pockets in his car. It was all Pre google search and UA-cam, back in the old days we had to be keen to learn through lots of phone calls, driving to factories and suppliers and chatting to people in the industry.

Probably the best flocking video I've seen. Excellent work covering the subject and I learned quite a bit. Especially when it comes to repairing issues.

I did some flocking for my recent dice tower build and I really had a hard time with it. I didn't seal the wood under it and it ended up with the light spots like your bad samples. I used mineral spirits to wipe it all down and remove all the old flocking as well as a bit of scraping. It was an absolute mess. The 2nd round went a lot better. Sealing the wood seems to be critically important as well as using more glue than you imagine. I wish I had your video before I did my project as it would have saved me a lot of effort! Thanks for sharing!

Hah, sorry that I took a bit long! I've not tried dice on flocking, how does it effect the sound? That'd be one place I'd be really torn between flocking and fabric - 3mm stiffened felt reaaaally deadens the dice roll sound (which may be good or bad depending on your perspective)

Thanks Paul. About five years ago, I did my first Flocking Project. I bought the Flock from Carba-Tec. They did not have the burgundy glue and the shop guy told me to just use regular PVA, which I did after a sealing coat of PVA. Worked well. So maybe try an experiment with just PVA as the glue. And of course it is half the price of the colour stuff.

I was genuinely surprised how well the PVA worked - I don't know why, but I assumed it'd create hard glue lines and lose a lot of the soft-fluffiness. Do you put paint down coloured first or tint the PVA to get a more uniform look?

A thin coat of PVA. Let it dry, and then thicker coat to stick the Flock. I turned some Christmas Ornaments last year ( snowmen). I used black glue and then the flock for a top hat. The glue bleed through my masking tape and made an ugly line. Where as if I had used PVA, I would not have had a problem. So something to consider in the appropriate circumstance

Love to see solutions for tear out on splined mitre joint boxes, might have been my technique or wood choice, but I had a shocking result with my last go. Tbh, your content is always solid, well thought out so don't over think what you do, it's great regardless. Hope you and the family ate doing okay.

    Courier tubes... SHOULD BE CHEAPER?

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  Рік тому

The tricky thing is whether you can find two that have a piston fit. Mailer tubes here tend to be a tube with plastic caps on either end, rather than two pieces that slide up and down.
