I think originality is rooted in our influences and how we value them. Take John Williams' score for the star wars for example. In it, one can make obvious connections to late romantic opera music such as Wagner, orchestration habits akin to Ravel and impressionism, and melodic tropes from folk music. None of these ideas are original in isolation, but the mix of them is. The way in which Williams values aspects from different music genres/eras is what distinguishes his style and makes it original.
Very well put! It’s basically impossible to make something wholly original, you’re always gonna be influenced by someone else. Better to make art that’s somewhat derivative than not create at all! And the more you make stuff the more you find your own style!
This is brilliant mate, loved it! As some fantastic creators keep saying: there's no original ideas, only good spin. "What if X but Y" is often enough to create something original feeling, even if it's built from familiar blocks. Even then sometimes, as you said, the simple fact that it's our 'take' on an existing thing is enough. And beyond that still, what's familiar and unoriginal to us may seem brand new to people who are, through you, seeing it for the first time. Great stuff. Can't wait for Mouth Gaming Mk. III
Thank you! I definitely feel more and more like it’s important to create things just for the fun of creation and not worry about it’s ultimate impact or ability to stand alone as something “new”. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos too!
