I read this man's biography years ago, and one memory of this book that remains involves the time when he paid for Sergio Aragones(Spy vs. Spy), to go home to Mexico for his Mother's funeral.
A generous move for a man that could squeeze a nickel so tight, the buffalo would scream.
One of my great comedic heroes.

Bill Gaines was a national treasure! This would be a far more poor culture if there had been no MAD.

What's funny is that Bill originally had no interest in doing this work.

True! And, with how things are going the disturbing, satirical, antics portrayed in Mad are synonynus with America. All the way up to The White house with Alfred E. Neuman as President!

Update: The subscriber Bill is talking about, did call him, as a result of this show.

Love this. Great upload. Even that rough vhs tech has a sweet feel to it.

Bill Gains, Our Hero at Mad magazine, said what he meant and meant what he said. Other magazines owe him a debt of gratitude for showing they could not beat up on them easy. Great Guy!

And he was faithful, 100 percent.

John Hobson -To demonstrate the fortitude of the guy; when MAD started to explode in the late 50's, advertising came knocking at his door. He could have made a bundle of cash but instead spoofed the ads in his mags. What a guy!!

Funny thing about that Nixon-Kennedy cover. Both men eventually did become President.

Lol yes you can tell it's an old VHS or Beta tape! Probably set at SLP!

Those poor beta tape buyers. They paid around $1500 plus for what ended up as just a clock when vhs won the tape war.

Unfortunate that the video gets a bit garbled during the EC discussion

On the Tales from the Crypt season 1 or 2 DVD collection, I forget which. There's a "Shockumentary" as it's called, which does cover a lot more of this in detail. I watched it at least twice in the last decade it is an eye-opener.

shame bill gaines died so young, hbo should bring back tales from the crypt tv series or a feature length movie, its been basically 20 years since it ended.

He was 70, that's not a young age. Of course, if he had cared about his weight, maybe he would've lived to be 80.

sha11235 he wasn’t unhealthily fat, and this was also while ago. Even now the average life span in the U.S. is only the late 70’s. So I imagine hen it was probably a few years earlier. That being said, you’re right that he didn’t die young, but I disagree that his weight was that much of a factor.

anyone can live to 100 or more ,that's a 30 year difference,70 is pretty young , compared to that.

I don't think he would still be alive today. He might have lived to be 80 had he cared about his weight. I know a doctor who would've helped him keep his weight down forever.

Bill Gaines, Mad Magazine and all the EC comics were absolutely brilliant. Thankfully the EC comics were reprinted and I bought them all. Too bad there were people with their head up their a**es who ruined EC comics😡

Why does the horrid movie industry have to ruin everything good by "bringing it back" and mutilating it. That would be my guess. Shaymalan is trash

I loved Mad when I was a kid many moons ago. I haven't even looked a copy in decades. Do they still have spy vs spy? I know Don Martin passed way, he and Mort Drucker were my favorites

    • @sha11235
      @sha11235 7 років тому

Yes, it still exists, but it is drawn in a different style than the way Prohias did it.

Also, Martin left the magazine in 1987 because he wanted to own the rights to his artwork, so he went to Cracked.

Interesting they don't move onto National Lampoon from MAD.
