Chuck was a puppeteer, a clown(an actor who perform comedy and drama)a singer, a dancer, a pantomimist, a projectionist, a scriptwriter, a mimic(Impressionist/dialectician and character voice over performer) and one of the co-founders of "The Sons Of The Desert"(The Laurel & Hardy Film Appreciation Society).
He became my father figure..Chuck was a talented, creative and sweet man..to this day(Crying)I still miss him.
Bill Gaines, Mad Magazine and all the EC comics were absolutely brilliant. Thankfully the EC comics were reprinted and I bought them all. Too bad there were people with their head up their a**es who ruined EC comics😡
Now....if we can only find the equally trippy Bit-O-Honey commercial..... I'd be happy.
I remember these commercials, especially the "Dumb" whenever "JB" is asked what he thinks of everything HE sees!
Well, There is at least 50 folks out there that had this burned into their brain as I did. Nesbits Orange nah nah nah nah nah nah NeSBeits ORaange🤪🤪
Lucy: Well... What do you think of our new Keyline Juice Commercial eh? EH???????? Marcina: that is the dumbest commercial I've ever seen... Lucy: Well What about Keyline Juice 2.O???? Marcina: huh....??? Lucy: The Un-Juice? Marcina: dumb... Lucy: That's-a-Juice? Marcina: dumb... Lucy: You got a lot of Juice. Marcina: dumb...
bienvenu, Thank You for posting this. I watched this when it originally aired.
This video summarizes most UA-cam comments: DUUUUUUUUUMB!
Lol yes you can tell it's an old VHS or Beta tape! Probably set at SLP!
I didn't even know you could record on 2 Beta
Those poor beta tape buyers. They paid around $1500 plus for what ended up as just a clock when vhs won the tape war.
When I was a kid, my brothers and I used "DUUUUUUMB!" a lot. "Wanna go play football at the park?" "DUUUUUUUMB!"
And what was so dumb about that?
Unfortunate that the video gets a bit garbled during the EC discussion
On the Tales from the Crypt season 1 or 2 DVD collection, I forget which. There's a "Shockumentary" as it's called, which does cover a lot more of this in detail. I watched it at least twice in the last decade it is an eye-opener.
True American hero right here
Love this. Great upload. Even that rough vhs tech has a sweet feel to it.
we used to sing this thing in jr. high school and no one made fun of us .... in Jr. High School.
Dumb
I read this man's biography years ago, and one memory of this book that remains involves the time when he paid for Sergio Aragones(Spy vs. Spy), to go home to Mexico for his Mother's funeral. A generous move for a man that could squeeze a nickel so tight, the buffalo would scream. One of my great comedic heroes.
Dam-mb
damn shame my dad’s not around now. a huge fan of Jonathan Winter, on a sick day home he happened to watch part of my Chuck McCann show (I was bugging him about this), and he became a big fan. belly laughs! my work was done. ;))
Another Gaines interview... ua-cam.com/video/zQMnzpRQ4fs/v-deo.html
Neat!!!
Good morning- I have a high quality recording of the music bed of "Put On A Happy Face." Chuck McCann sings to it. I would like to send it to you. It is the Johnny Williams Orchestra who has done "Star Wars," "Super Man, "Raiders Of The Lost Ark...' I cannot figure out how to get it on UA-cam. I'm at kevintvanmeter2010@gmail.com.
Interesting they don't move onto National Lampoon from MAD.
Bill Gaines was a national treasure! This would be a far more poor culture if there had been no MAD.
What's funny is that Bill originally had no interest in doing this work.
True! And, with how things are going the disturbing, satirical, antics portrayed in Mad are synonynus with America. All the way up to The White house with Alfred E. Neuman as President!
And, that was when Don Draper retired from the advertising business.
Dumb.
Hilarious commercial, but I've never heard of this stuff!
Update: The subscriber Bill is talking about, did call him, as a result of this show.
Funny thing about that Nixon-Kennedy cover. Both men eventually did become President.
I didn't leave Mad for Playboy. Been with Mad for many years.
+sha11235 I left Mad for National Lampoon. Then gave that up about 3 years later
+MoeGreensLeftEye Well, come back to MAD.
+sha11235 I loved Mad when I was a kid many moons ago. I haven't even looked a copy in decades. Do they still have spy vs spy? I know Don Martin passed way, he and Mort Drucker were my favorites
Yes, it still exists, but it is drawn in a different style than the way Prohias did it.
Also, Martin left the magazine in 1987 because he wanted to own the rights to his artwork, so he went to Cracked.
Bill had an interesting voice, didn't he?
m night shyamalan bringing back tales from the crypt this year.
+Simon Hinstridge Why?
what do you mean why?
+Schean Sagawa I was wondering what you meant by why?
Why does the horrid movie industry have to ruin everything good by "bringing it back" and mutilating it. That would be my guess. Shaymalan is trash
Bill Gains, Our Hero at Mad magazine, said what he meant and meant what he said. Other magazines owe him a debt of gratitude for showing they could not beat up on them easy. Great Guy!
And he was faithful, 100 percent.
John Hobson -To demonstrate the fortitude of the guy; when MAD started to explode in the late 50's, advertising came knocking at his door. He could have made a bundle of cash but instead spoofed the ads in his mags. What a guy!!
shame bill gaines died so young, hbo should bring back tales from the crypt tv series or a feature length movie, its been basically 20 years since it ended.
He was 70, that's not a young age. Of course, if he had cared about his weight, maybe he would've lived to be 80.
sha11235 he wasn’t unhealthily fat, and this was also while ago. Even now the average life span in the U.S. is only the late 70’s. So I imagine hen it was probably a few years earlier. That being said, you’re right that he didn’t die young, but I disagree that his weight was that much of a factor.

He was 70. That isn't young.
anyone can live to 100 or more ,that's a 30 year difference,70 is pretty young , compared to that.
I don't think he would still be alive today. He might have lived to be 80 had he cared about his weight. I know a doctor who would've helped him keep his weight down forever.
Mt friends and I in high school loved watching this when we were well, high! lol :) Monty Python's Spam skit was hilarious too :)
My kids can make a soda commercial.
One of my favorite "Commercial" memories . . . . a delightfully funny, weird and wonderful alternative to the mostly bleak ocean of horribly boring, insulting, loud and overly "Commercial" commercials that fill the screen more than ever now and have assaulted the senses and intelligence of many for decades! I still laugh and can remember the words to this quirky and fun, animated goodie . . . Was a breath of fresh air then and still brings a smile to my face now!
A little late I know but you articulated my thoughts exactly
Thank you, Klaatu!
From "The Day The Earth Stood Still"
Crumb got Ripped off when they made the Fritz the cat movie without his permission!
No, he didn't get ripped off. He got paid $50,000 for the use of the character. That was a damn lot of money in 1972, almost $300,000 by today's value. That is NOT "getting ripped off", by any stretch of the imagination. He wasn't satisfied with the finished product, however, and when they made a sequel, that's when he had had enough, and killed the character. Harvey Pekar had an interesting, pragmatic take on the subject. See "Ozzie Nelson's Open Letter to Robert Crumb" for more info.
You're quite right, Curtis!!
The first 22 seconds were animated by Mark Kausler.
For whoever was looking for the Delaware Punch it is available on this site (as well as Nesbitt's and other greats) soda-emporium.com/
what about... the cure for the common soda?
@kloggeddrain Coolness! If I ever get a Costco account I'll check it out. I wish I could find Delaware Punch again; that was my absolute favorite.
@LuvvyDuck Erm....no admittedly. I got a pack of vintage sodas and 3 bottles of nesbit's orange were in it. It's really good. I forget what the pack was called, but i know it was sold in costco.
@kloggeddrain you're lucky, then. Do you live back East or like that? I know we don't have it here in Southern Cali anymore, at least not in my town. We used to have some really great stuff like Nesbitt's, Nehi and Delaware Punch. When we had the old Alpha-Beta markets they still carried them.
@LuvvyDuck What are you talking about im drinking it right now.
I've never hit the acid or taken mushrooms. After this, I don't think I have to.
I did twice in high school in the 80s. It was not like a Nesbitt’s commercial and I don’t recommend it, ( though I heard “mushrooms” have improved in the last 39 years.)
WTF?
Coolest commercial ever!
Not only was the commercial great, their orange soda was the best ever. When I went to the fridge, it was always a toss-up between Nesbitt's orange and grape Nehi.
I drank this recently and it was so good, the strawberry and peach one is good too.
