  • The Largest Crocodile to Ever Exist: Sarcosuchus The Super Predator...
In today's video, we will be taking a look at the natural history of this giant, delving deep into the prehistoric swamps it called home to learn how it lived, how it hunted, and, eventually, how it was discovered by paleontologists millions of years later. We will be travelling back in time to a period known as the Hauterivian, part of the Early Cretaceous period that saw the beginning of the golden age of dinosaur evolution. Sit back and relax as we take you back in time to meet Sarcosuchus imperator - a flesh-eating crocodyliform from the time of the dinosaurs.

Fascinating. What a beast! That is meant as a compliment. If you have ever seen a modern-day crocodile's power taking down a wildebeest at a river's edge, it would be hard to imagine the power that Sarcosuchus must have had. Thank you for featuring Sarcosuchus.

I don't know. The narrow snout looks like something more fit for catching fish. Probably ate whatever they could catch but I would say something like a deinosuchus, with its really robust skull, is better fit for ambushing dinosaurs. The skull at BYU's exhibit puts me in mind of a giant gator. Teeth on that are bigger than a tyrannosaur's. Whatever the jaws bit down on wasn't going anywhere except underwater.

I going to take a run at the purpose of the bulla: It was a finely tuned sensory devise, among other uses being able to pick up movements of potential prey and other creatures. It stayed remarkably moist even out of water. It also served as protection to the smaller teeth behind it and a buffer to the large upper teeth embedded in it.

I heard that Sarco is not a member of the crocodile family. Does a Sarco have different body parts than a crocodile?

Alligators can't crossbreed with crocodiles, both are genetically too distinct from each other, crossbreeding an American Alligator with a Chinese Alligator seems far more viable since both are alligators and more closely related
