I'm REALLY late to the party, but thanks for posting! The visibility and good preservation of the wreck made for great images. I almost said out loud "don't go down that companionway...!" because, well, it actually gave me the creeps. Now that's a testament to good underwater filming.

Great video! Thank you!! It brings back a lot of memories. My dad, Vern Hinze was one of the first divers to explore the America back in the 50's. I remember as a kid being in awe of his tales of the America & other ships he dove on in lake Superior. I also remember I got my ass spanked for eating some of the candy sticks in a jar he salvaged from the America. They tasted like fresh peppermint candy canes..

I hope he took more than candy,it was totally legal to salvage prior to the 1980 bottom lands preserve act.And if he did your family should have some nice pieces from him.

Sure would be neat to gather some investors and build a faithful replica of the America and turn it into a tour boat perhaps on Lake Superior.

Amazing! I don't know the first thing about SCUBA diving , but I suppose that one of the advantages of diving in the Great Lakes is that there are no dangerous nor ugly creatures like sharks, stingrays, octopuses, etc.

Great Lakes shipwrecks are like time capsules. You get spoiled for the best and diving brown stains on an ocean floor lose all the appeal after you get spoiled for Great Lakes wrecks, and Lake Superior's Isle Royale is arguably the BEST wreck diving IN THE WORLD! ...Yup, I said it!
Did you know they planned to raise the SS America in the mid-1960's and turn it into a museum ship? They even planned on sailing it back to Duluth, under it's own steam power, using it's original equipment after 37+ years in the lake! Then a SCUBA diver blew it up with dynamite in or around 1965 so that plan was scrapped. Let's see you do that with an ocean wreck! -Spoiled for the best

It hit some rocks beneath the surface of the water, the captain handed the boat over to a rookie captain (John wick) who caused it to hit the rocks, he then grounded the ship where it sank for the most part, with the cabin and bow still sticking out of the water

This is the SS America in Lake Superior, although the one youre likely thinking of, SS American Star, did collapse into the water a few years ago
