Thank you for all of your hard work in putting this and all of your videos together. I hope that all that see these appreciate not just the artists, but you as well.
Hello and my thanks to you for your appreciation. And although I may be a minor presence on youtube I'm very pleased with the favourable comments I get from viewers about my contributions.
Thanks Pete. You did Maurice De Becque well. Another remarkable talent you've found and taught me about. It is a shame that he hasn't been recognized as the creative and hard working artist and illustrator that he was. We deserve to know more about him as much as he deserves recognition.
Thank God for Pete Beard. He's doing a thing that badly needed to be done, and none of us knew it needed doing until we saw him doing it. We are in his debt.
Another astounding and varied talent I'd never heard of! His facility at work for both children and decidedly-nots (and everything in between) recalls the flexibility of the modern Shel Silverstein!
I suspect that he was excluded from the Art History textbooks and other collections from a sense of "pudeur" surrounding the more erotic images. Just my suspicion.

Merci pour votre commentaire. Habituellement, on se souvient assez bien des illustrateurs français, mais pour une raison quelconque, pas cet homme talentueux. Je ne sais pas pourquoi.
@@petebeard As a wildlife artist myself, I appreciate that he didn't put hats and shirts on his Jungle Book images. It would have diminished the dignity of the animal forms. I'm glad you've shone a little more light on this remarkable artist, Pete. I love the Reynard stuff and some of the saucy illustrations are fabulous too. A wonderful video, once again.
Fascinating, I'd never heard of Maurice De Becque. I particularly like his Kipling animal illustrations and the incredibly vivid, fresh colors of the painting at 11:45 (small boats on the water). Thank you so much for all the work you put into these videos. You're like the Sir David Attenborough of illustrators!
More than worthwhile, it took me back to when I was a young artist working primarily in etching and discovering the technique of aquatint, it changed the way I made prints. A pleasure to see the works of a master. Thanks
Thanks as usual for your comment, and I must confess both etching and aquatint are alien concepts to me. In my ignorant youth at art school i avoided all forms of image making that I then considered archaic. My loss.
Hi Pete, De Becque definitely deserves to be remembered and you have done him justice in this excellent overview of his work. Thanks for your continuing hard work.
What a spectacular collection of varied styles. His early work, along with the seascapes, Jungle Book and de Lisle illustrations are particularly well rendered. Thank you once again, Peter. Your research is much appreciated.
Absolutely loved the illustrations from the JUNGLE BOOK and De Becque's animal renderings (something I am particularly attracted to). And, as I keep droning on about myself in these comment pages, I'm always struck by how many of these highlighted illustrators are masters of such diverse mediums in their careers. Craftsmanship and basic skills of drawing and painting always rises to the top and De Becque is a perfect example. And, if I may confess, I'm more attracted to the mastery of his figure drawings as opposed to the erotic nature of the images. Drawing figures is hard! ;-) De Becque knows what he's doing. Anyway, thanks again, Pete, for highlighting another master illustrator. Hope all is well with you. Cheers!

Like several other artists you have featured, I had never heard of Maurice De Becque. It is a shame he, like so many illustrators, has been hidden from the world by the curtains of time. I'm very happy you have brought Maurice De Becque to our attention.
His animal studies are for sure his crowning achievement, thanks for putting this together! The illustration in the thumbnail with the tiger, what's it called - didn't see it featured in full in the video?
Hello and thanks for the appreciation. I'm not actually sure but it is most likely from the Jungle Book, although it could also be from Poemes Barbares. But if you google his name and jungle book it comes up in the images.
Hello and I think you may well be right. Which gives me a feeling of some validation - but also makes me somewhat depressed. This fellow is a case in point.
Extraordinary, that an artist so versatile and so immensely talented should have become obscure. The images of illustrations for Le fleurs du mal instantly bring to life Baudelaire's poetry. His Jungle Book is very different from others I have seen. yet somehow more applicable, catching the spirit, the feel of the stories. (With apologies to other artists, whose work I am not familiar with). Delving into a different world - watching this was like Alice's journey down the rabbit hole. The research must be intense - thank you.

Hello and thanks a lot for the comment. I have had a few holidays and there are more planned. But if I'm honest making the videos deosn't seem like work.
Gorgeous works. Such elegant compositions and intoxicating color harmony. Each one on point without fail. Thank you for making me aware of my newest favorite illustrator. This, incidentally, is just what I needed to see, as I've taken it upon myself to do s series of illustrations for each track on an old record of lovely life-affirming and lushly orchestrated, never-condescending songs on an album my mom used to play me in my formative years , and knew I wanted to avoid anthropomorphizing any animals where they appear. Like De Becque did with the Jungle Book, it would be best, I think, to make the animals believable, as if the events in the songs' lyrics actually transpired - even if, for example, a turtle speaks - since the spirit of the record overall is so honest and never patronizing or underestimating the intelligence of its young audience. Anyways, I could very well have kept this ti myself after "thanx for clue-ing me in to DeBecque"... Just a weirdo thinking aloud, and, nevertheless, may as well post it. No harm done. No shame in my comment game, despite the digressions and self-indulgence. Thanks again!

Great video as always, I wonder if he is a little more known in his home country giving that he illustrated a quite popular books like the Jungle Book.
Hello and thanks for your favourable comment. I dont know for sure but given how little information there is about him on Wikipedia France, or any other French source/archive I suspect that he's pretty unknown even in his own country
Another obscure gem. An artist with so much quality and so prolific and yet bafflingly unknown to the public. You remarked on this fact in the video, have you come to any conclusions as to why such talented artists remained so little known by the public. France, in particular, was known for it's Graphic Arts.
Hello and thanks a lot. And although I've given it considerable thought I really don't know why so many have become so forgotten. And in this instance it's surprising as the French are usually among the better nations at keeping their past culture alive.
@@petebeard Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they are illustrating someone else's ideas, and in that regard 'not really' the creative force behind a work of literary art. Occasionally some illustrators do receive more recognition, Beardsley and Rackham spring to mind, both were significant for their influence over many of their contemporaries, so their roles as stylistic originators may be why they received more acclaim than is usual in the field of illustration. And then we have cartoonists - in some senses regarded as inferior to 'proper' illustrators - who DO get broader public recognition, I'm thinking of people like Thelwell or Ronald Searle here, who's art expressed a distinctive worldview, in a sense they were both author and illustrators of their work. Heath Robinson is known more for eccentric gadgetry than his excellent skills as a versatile artist. So, three factors. The assumption that that illustrators are secondary to the real creator of a piece of work. That many illustrators, though skilled, are rarely groundbreaking stylistically, and that most have nothing original to say. The exceptions, Searle etc, proving the rule. Apologies for an exercise in 'thinking aloud' but I think those are my conclusions. And just to say, I don't think it's fair, people should know about John Minton, Eric Ravillious, Rockwell Kent and their like, because illustration was and is a necessary means of an artist supporting himself and his family. And good art whether in a gallery or on the printed page always has the power to lift our soul, even if only for a moment.
@@mesolithicman164 Hello again and thanks for your observations about the lamentable second class status of illustrators. Personally, I try to focus on attempting to redress the balance through the channel, and hope (probably in vain) that it increases awarenes and appreciation of at least some of them.

This video is amazing, and very worthwhile. Thanks 🙏

Hello again and that's good to hear. I didn't know if it would be a popular video or not, but it looks very promising so far.

i love your videos so so much
Hello and I'm delighted about that - thanks a lot.
Wonderful video! Thank you!
Hello and many thanks for your comment.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they are illustrating someone else's ideas, and in that regard 'not really' the creative force behind a work of literary art.
Another treasure trove of two dimensional magic brought into the light. Thanks Peter 🤝Beard.
