    Rather than “don’t be obsessed with the equipment”, the lesson I heard was “internalize the equipment so that you don’t need to think about it”. Obsessing about gear is a natural path to internalizing gear capabilities so you can just react to artistic sensibilities rather than the technical.

      Well said, Janusz seems to care a lot more about the art of what you do the the gear rather than what type of equipment he is using. Although I'm not sure if he was at any point "obsessed with equipment", as he always seems to be disinterested in talking about it. At one Q&A, someone asked him about cameras and he literally said "I will not talk about gear, next" lol

      True in a sense but there’s also ppl out there that just plain obsessive with gears without any sense of artistic growth.

    How do I master some more of the basics he was talking about? I wonder how he learned when he was a novice cinematographer.

    • @AlterCineYT
      @AlterCineYT  3 роки тому +16

      I think what he means is that you should just keep shooting and gain experience on set and make enough mistakes to the point where you don't make those mistakes anymore. Janusz worked as a technician (camera dept, electric/grip, gaffer etc) and learned by working on set from other DPs. You don't always have to do that though, you can shoot and learn basic cinematography on your own by watching high end cinematography work that you like and trying to emulate it. Study how they light and try new techniques that work for you. Basic photography you can learn on your own really easily by just going out and shooting things (proper exposure, frame rates etc). Lighting is what you really want to focus on learning. Always watching the light, the softness and hardness of light, ways to manipulate and soften light for faces, knowing when to use hard light, and learn how the Inverse-Square law of light works. Also keep up on learning from other cinematographers online, like the content we produce!
