I think it's more that it was poorly uploaded to the internet in 2004 and that's the only version out there now. I have some old vhs home videos from the 80s and 90s that I've digitized and they look surprisingly good.

The more I think about it, I suspect that the lineman laid on the ground for some time due to extreme fatigue. Some people seem to think he just laid there due to a lack of motivation or laziness, but I think he was at the point of exhaustion, because I know when I become worn out from exercise, it's extremely difficult to think properly and you start to care less and less about the game you're playing.
