What a great construction technique. Watching other concrete printer homes being built. The printed home was much quicker as the printer does not have to haul or lift or tamp as the production is guided by computer…. Very impressed with your work!
Thanks, yes these bags work really well, and dirt is plentiful in most areas.
That OSB will turn into wet cardboard very fast. You need to dig that OSB out get some steal plates and some Steal angles. Then you need to weld one of the steal angles to the steel plate and pound it in the slot that the wood was, make sure it clears the door frame and sits on the wall on both sides, then put the other steal angle on the other side and weld it together from underneath. You could have made your own concrete headers with plenty of rebar in it, but since to didn't do either you need to support the walls above the door and the window. If the wall doesn't flat out fail, the weight will break your window, and you won't be able to open your door once it fully settles.
In the old adobe homes they use wood beams for headers above all the doors and windows. They usually will oil them and plaster around them too.

We could have planned things out better, but it will all work out. The OSB was just a quick solution to keep the newly laid bags from sagging down. We have plans in mind to support the window and door frames better, and it should be very stable in the end, so stay tuned.

Great video. I suppose it's too late now, but I recommend 2 gallon buckets. I've moved a lot of dirt in these. They are just light enough that one in each hand is very comfortable to carry and easy to lift between elevations. Kyle looks to have a good attention to detail, awesome!

👍 They considered just filling the buckets half full, but they both felt comfortable with the weight of 3/4 full, so it worked out okay.
Kyle's definitely not a perfectionist, but the walls turned out really nice!

Awesome work! Maybe a big wooden headed sledgehammer to tamp the sides? Then you're not kicking bags with side of foot or kneeling to tamp with 2x4

You are the only build I've seen since 2012 when I did my build that are using ratchet straps for the top plate... I swore I innovated that technique vs a cement top plate but I see other creative minds at play... 👍 Sweet
We got the idea from Tiny Shiny Home. They use hurricane straps. 🌞

Have any rodents tried to burrow up underneath his walls? We have had that happen and said some live traps just to see what it was and it was mice. Might be time for snap traps. This is looking fantastic!❤

in future before the sill plate add one more full course of bag but only a few inches thick so the sill plate can be set into this bag to level it yu could also put a water membrane all around the roof so any water that some how manages to get that far in gets directed out to the edge of the wall ... for those bad days when rain comes from below and such ....

yeah if you laid a final light bag course to tamp the sill plate into you could have used a 12 inch wide treated bottom that sat in a tamped out level path abut half as thick as the board .... then laid and pinned like you did BUT bend the rebar over flat between the top board and bottom board ....even direct it inwards so if further tie in is required you can weld to the end of the rebar if needed ... then mortar you bottom plate to the bags and level to the bottom of the top board for a later drip strip to push water out far from the wall or channel it to one end and barrel it ...

another way one could affix windows to the bags would be with long nails in the frame .... or better very long spiral nails or screws .... so they bite in ...
First time I encountered this type of building, but I'm fascinated and intrigued by Hyperadobe walls/buildings, thank you for sharing!
These long bags are so much easier and more stable than sand bags. It is a really neat process and makes for a very solid and inexpensive home.

Love this man. Thanks for sharing. BTW I seen and helped build homes in this same way. One thing we did in hurricane prone areas. Was to use post hole dingers. Down into the top of the walls about 4 feet. Then put rebar and those Simpson Strong-Tie . Down in them hole. This made it so we could then nail off the top plate to them. Not that you can do this now or do I think you need it. Just making the comment so maybe if someone would like more ways of doing there top plate. Yours ROCKS !! Thanks, no worries! That sounds like a very strong way to attach the roof, and a great way to do it in areas that get tornadoes or hurricanes. The huge amount of mass from an earth structure should hold up very well to extreme wind and weather, but it is very important to attached the roof extremely well. Yes, we think this house will last for a very long time here. 🌞🏜️
Great project and video explanation. On the strapping, it looks like you've placed ratchet straps. Perhaps the strapping used on shipping crates/boxes would be more cost efficient... You could even place more throughout the wall structure.
Thanks! The red straps are some that our son bought inexpensively on line. The thick heavy straps were free, they were holding together the salvaged wood bundles that we used on projects at our place.

In my humble opinion , earthbag buttresses should have been incorporated into your design every eight feet of straight wall length for added stability. After the fact, consider setting cemented and moisture protected in the ground 6x6 or 8x8 post every eight feet tight up against the straight wall for wall stability. You can tie the post into your bond beam. Your work appears neat and level. Congrats!
I know a lot of people add buttresses to hyperadobe, but I think it's somewhat of a carryover from earth bags which are MUCH less stable. Until you see and feel 18 inch walls in person, it's hard to grasp how solid they are. We thought he probably should put in some buttresses, but he decided not to. As we have seen the walls going up, we are pretty confident, that it will be just fine without them. Time will tell. 🙂🏜️

Thanks! It's just an outside faucet. Before starting on the walls, they buried and stubbed up the water and drainage lines. We have had some spring winds, but overall the weather has been really nice! Wishing you a wonderful weekend! 😊

I think it would have been wise to have more doors in the structure for future possible extensions. It is difficult to cut doors in existing walls like this I think. Moreover, I think any overture means many tons of dirt less to move.

Thanks! He didn't want to mess with them at the time, but wishes now that he had put more in. We will be putting a window in the door, so that will help some. His floor will probably be something like we did in our house, earthen in living areas and concrete in kitchen and bath.

I wonder... what would the ambient temperature be like. Would it be similar to being in a basement mostly surrounded by earth? So then you wouldnt have to use much electricity for ac or maybe not even need to use any?
It should stay pretty nice. Probably a bit warm in the summer and a bit cool in the winter, but overall very livable and steady temperatures that don't vary much from day to night.
If you were going to rebuild this, would you make sure to finish of the walls with leveling of the top straight away, perhaps as each sides top layer was layed, before the cement/concrete set try to assemble the wood frame and make sure to stomp every side perfectly leveled, before it sets? Or is there a reason why you do it the way you did?
He has to walk on the bag he just filled, so it's not going to be perfectly level. It also would dry out before you can get a full course on to make final adjustments. Leveling everything at the end worked fine.
More windows, putting in lintels, and adding the electric boxes between the layers, are the things we would have done differently.

Question where do you find land where their is no zoning laws? I know they are doing it in New Mexico and AZ.

Here in Cochise County, land that is zoned RU-4 can get what's called an opt-out permit. Counties in other states have something like it too, but it can be hard to figure out which ones do. Best wishes!

We have the opt-out permit. It's a permit that is available on some land in Cochise County, Arizona.
I'm surprised you didn't do a larger bond beam all the way around made with soda cans like a earth ship, then put on the sill plate on top of that......

if the wall settles wont the concrete be under tension and snap ?
It will likely crack some, but it shouldn't be a problem. It will also be covered in stucco and sealed. The roof structure is also very rigid.

I dont see any barbed wire in between the courses. I used 2 runs of it between each course and Drove rebar every 5 feet of wall.
Barbed wire is needed with sandbags and supper adobe because the bags are slippery. The hyperadobe bag material is grippy and has holes so it joins together very well, making an almost monolithic structure. These walls are impressively solid!
What are his plans for the pit?
I would make it into a green house or cellar, but he doesn't have any plans for it yet.
I wonder if you guys could have ran one more course of tubing around the top of the walls and then DIDN'T compact it. Then the 2x6 roof base plate could have sunk into the soft layer much easier. Just an idea.
It would take 2 days to lay another full course. The dirt doesn't stay soft for long and needs to be compacted within a couple of hours. Most people use cob to fill in the gaps, but this seems more stable.

Q: How can you ensure that these bags not joined by any screw or knot will stick together when any violent storm or quake takes place?
The walls are 18 inches thick, and the bags are a mesh material with small holes, so the layers all sticks together. It's a whole lot of mass, it's not going anywhere.
