I've only done one kaleidoscope in my life. It was extremely tedious. Glad that you showed the importance of pinning all 6 layers in place. Put the time in beforehand and you'll be much more happier with the results of your cutting.

A quick rule of thumb re repeats: the distance between the beginning of one print of selvedge fabric, colour, name etc info and the beginning of the next is one repeat. So if you want 6 repeats you cut 6 lengths using these markers. For a kaleidoscope pattern I put the 6 pieces together, then cut the strips the length I need from them. Then the six triangles together. If you have the space it is easier to do if you have the space to spread the fabric out. It gives lots of different kaleidoscope patterns. Can not wait to see the finished quilt. Oh regarding the sewing together of the blocks; I sew them in threes and then put on the design wall in rows. Each section of 3 triangle will fit together with the next kaleidoscope 3 in a row. And it is easy to move around the sections around this way. 😊😊😂

I find it easier to tear the fabric on the fold so you're only working with a 20 - 22" wide fabric. Then cut the 6 repeats, stack all 6 together, cut into strips and then into your triangles. It comes out very accurate and it's easier to cut through 6 layers instead of 12. These quilts fascinate me with how different each hexagon comes out. Love your channel - keep it coming!!

The process looks so finicky, but this is so close to a zero-waste technique. I also watched Donna Jordan's video on this kaleidoscope method; hearing it explained by 2 different teachers helps me process.
As a new quilter, hearing you say "It's only fabric. It's only thread," uplifts me. I never even started for so long because, struggling with perfectionism, I was afraid to waste material and time if it wasn't 'good enough'. My first 2 full-sized quilts (2nd is on the frame now) were made using thrifted materials only.
    Thank you, from Canada.

Hand piecing is soothing, calming, and relaxing plus it takes a longer time to complete a quilt. ;) Machine piecing is quicker, especially if another quilt pattern pops up and demands attention. :)

I'm liking that you pinned. Very much. But how do you know it's the same at the fold in order to get the 2nd print.? Wouldn't you need to unfold fabric and do 6 layers instead of 12 when cutting?

Mark - Thanks for the blue painter's tape tip. The fact it adds an edge to help snug up the ruler to fabric is really smart❣ Just saw your interview on Karen's channel. You are so awesome. Thank you for sharing your knowledge🥰 p.s. Hope you have a cutting mat that swivels now, so you don't have to cut like a lefty🤣.

I am wondering why you varied from the original instructions (Bethany Reynolds, Magic Stack-n-Whack Quilts - 1998)? If using the selvage as your repeat markings, I would go from the first letter all the way to the first letter of the next printing as my repeat, measuring 6 of them I would have the fabric store clerk cut at that point and/or rounding up to the next even cutting point. Wow, you must have a lot of arm strength to cut through 12 layers of fabric, I have trouble cutting through 6 layers of fabric. Next, snip in the fold and then rip the fabric yardage in half. Fold and set one half aside for later. Now, straighten up one short edge, measure your first repeat and cut. Use this first repeat cut as your template to cut the exact remaining 5 repeats. Spray starch and iron all 6 repeats. Pick a point in one corner, about one-half inch from the long edge, and pin, as you demonstrated. Continue to pin the entire repeat of fabric, spacing the pins in a line about 3-4 inches apart. (Bethany Reynolds, Magic Stack-n-Whack Quilts) Up to this point I have spent about 3 hours working, so I usually do this the evening before any cutting and sewing. I trim one long edge even in preparation to cutting the strip sets. I prefer to use the ruler as my guide rather than the mat measure lines but that is up to the individual. PLEASE point out to your viewers that you oriented the strip set on the vertical because of your camera angle & studio space, and that you would orient the strip set on the horizontal for cutting all the pieces. Yes, you will still have to rotate the strip set, but as they are still pinned no problems with the layers shifting. Your triangle ruler has a center line with the one-quarter seam allowance marked. So put the center seam allowance line on the trimmed short cut edge to make your first cut. This will assure that those edge triangles will fit exactly to make a straight edge on the quilt. The pieces you cut off will most likely be too small to fit exactly. Thank you for pointing out the sewing the triangles into 2 half hexagons for designing the quilt top. I do need to go back and watch your first video on the Kaleidoscope quilt.
