Being that the Behringer Pro-VS is due to come out soon, this video will be perfect for comparison and review! Dr. Mix, you ARE the man! Just saw your DX-7 review and there is nothing but EPIC going on there, especially with your musical skills! Thank you for what you do. Cheers!!!
I just recovered my Prophet VS Rack from storage for a decade and I'm upgrading the OLED Blue. Miss the MIDI analog good old days. Your videos are always joyful and inspiring, Thank You Doc!
Mid 80s that was the last phase of vintage analog as it merged with digital in hi end studio faves VS and PPG. The hard core and pros always loved this
These cost about 3 grand second hand, made in 1986. The filter makes it sound warmer. I've got a name for your tune, 'UA-camr Steals Prophet VS While Owner Is Still At Namm'
Yes, indeed. If I recall correctly, Dave Smith worked for Yamaha after Sequential went belly-up, Yamaha then bought part of Korg, and Dave soon got involved with the development of the Wavestation . 🙂
@@derekbaker3279 Yes, Yamaha bought Sequential IP, and many Sequential staff went to Korg. Result = Yamaha SY22/TG33/SY35 and Korg Wavestation/EX/AD/SR.
Every time Dr. Mix posts a video of a hardware synth that's being sponsored by the developer of a software version of that synth, it just causes me to lust harder after the real thing! Never once has it gotten me interested in some VST reproduction!
Sometimes the VST is the only tool available. Not in my wildest dreams I'll put a hand in a Moog, an ARP Quadra, etc. A guy in my City owns a DX-7. Other owns a Farfisa, other millionaires have some few others, but they woudn't lend me one.
8:08 sounds like a preset for The Box (Orbital) 11:10 - 11:48 super cool 14:35 something like FSOL I always enjoy these videos, thank you a lot Dr Mix !!!
Hi Doctor Mix! can I ask exactly which Cartridge contains the sounds you played in the final part of the video? what number is it? maybe the cartridge 240 or 241? Thanks in advance!
Prophet VS has a nice legacy: it led to Wavestation which led to Evolver/PolyEvolver which led to Pro-2/Prophet-12 ... which led to Pro-3 and whatever polyphonic synth Dave Smith comes up now based on that architecture
Remember testing this thing out back in the day at the music store... I've still got a Yamaha sy-22 module sitting in my closet... Make me want to dig it out and play with it🙃
I remember reading in a "future music" (US edition) interview with Trent Reznor about when he first got his Prophet vs back before he did "Pretty Hate Machine" and just got it out of the store and had to put it in his backseat car where the end of it had to be poking out of the open back seat door window and it started to rain and it gave the vs a bit of damage that he was able to fix but apparently the circuitry started getting weird and every year since he got it the sound gets a little bit weirder!🎹🎧💫😵👌
Heyyy Pssssst... Dr Mix, here is you patient listening.... and I have just listened that you have set wrong you LEFT and RIGHT channel... or that keyboard was always worked wrong 😬
Apparently Kraftwerk used the VS (It would almost have to be on Electric Cafe, because it came out way too late for any of their other albums other than The Mix and Tour de France, which came out too late for the VS), but I'm not sure where they used it on that album.
Doctor Mix panned the synth to the left and it went in my right headphone. I had to take them off to see if I had them on back to front but I didn't. Very confusing :D
Fantastic synth with lots of spooky character.. and it sounds like no other! Btw Prophet VS was extensively used on Stranger Things Soundtrack. In an interview Kyle Dixon stated that he used „Prophet vs for very mysterious X-Files like sounds because of the wavetable nature of it, but it also retains a very musical quality due to its wonderfully smooth analog filters.“
i dont get what everyones so sour about, this thing has a lot of character and seems great. maybe everyone in the comments just makes really boring music
The first Was Bee gees from spirit having.... Too much... ua-cam.com/video/nREV8bQJ1MA/v-deo.html And if i remember correct the Vs was used for the intro of We are the world Usa for Africa
Funny Fact, it seems he has used the same (not neutral's) Joystick position in the 2nd half of the Video. But anyway, nice Synth and as always, very satisfying when you have you jam sessions with your self :-)
Don’t know why but every time see Doctor Mix I’ll be extremely happy 😂
His energy is fantastic
Infectious positivism :)
same here, I love hime..so charming!

The song's the Bee Gees 'Too Much Heaven'. Fabulous harmonies and apparently an MJ favourite album.
My favourite synth. Still got it since new -86.😊
Peter Orre jag med... Har både rack och key kvar ;-)
Good choice; you bought during the last wave of vintage analog when it merged with digital here. Hi end then and now

They're around $7,000.00 used! If you need cash.

hot damn! this synth is an ambient pad MACHINE.
Look up the Fizmo - another great-sounding machine.
Hi end studio piece for pros. This was the last phase of vintage analog as it merged with digital. VS and PPG were the leaders
The VS was used by keyboarder Brad Cole on the "Serious Hits...Live!" tour (Phil Collins).
Used by Prince before then
I’m fascinated by this synth. The magic of Dave Smith. I can hear where my Wavestation started from. Great video as ever.
and you are perfectly right!
Bee Gees - Too Much Heaven
This is what I was expecting at the show! This is the quirky stuff people looking for new sounds and styles would jump on
I've been watching you for a while now. Same passion as you for synths. I subscribe. Hello from switzerland
I just recovered my Prophet VS Rack from storage for a decade and I'm upgrading the OLED Blue. Miss the MIDI analog good old days. Your videos are always joyful and inspiring, Thank You Doc!
VS is my favorite synth. it can sound warm and lush like prophet 5 or crazy weird and raw
Mid 80s that was the last phase of vintage analog as it merged with digital in hi end studio faves VS and PPG. The hard core and pros always loved this
So, when you did the balance thing, I noticed they are reversed!
Your vids always bring a smile to my face. Always. Many thanks.
I like the prophet VS it sounds so 1980's.
Thank you 😊 for making my day happier🌞🤗🤩.
Oh My GOSH! One of the MOST memorable Synth in history. And your videos return the whole sound experinece.

The predecessor of the Korg Wavestation. Once read that the Wavestation was a further development of the prophet VS.

Please do a review of Sequential Prophet 6 :-)
The patch at 11:00 sounds like the Mario cart go sound when the race starts
Aphex yes.
Sounds like the countdown of the race start
Hey, I have the patches UVI made from this for their VST.
What’s the name of the song you play for the first seconds?
The song's name is "Spontaneous Prophecy"
Its too much heaven by The Bee gees

I really love Arturias most recent Prophet VS vst. It has become my favorite synth. Hope one day I can play with the real thing
Love the sound
As a Prophet VS Owner, I can say that this synth has MUCH more in stock as shown here. Go and view some Retrosound Videos of the Prophet VS.
this is "in action" video, not "in depth"
@@filkry8832 aha
Agreed, this is a sucky demo of a VS. Hardly shows what kinds of sounds it's really capable of.
@@activelow9297 It's because he only just got it guys!! It takes a master of a machine to do the best review.

How about a follow up with focus on UVI's plug-ins? Please?

This is the precursor to the Korg Wavestation.
Beautiful synth but doint care for the sounds the arp Quadra is the most beautiful synth and has the sounds to go with it.
