Want Me Back is the first one I ever heard from you. I'd listened to Lawrence and Vulfpeck, and my friend was like "Dude listen to this" and suddenly there was a whole new world named Cody Fry to listen to.
You two Cody and Cory, should make MORE music together, your chemistry, musically and personally, it's brilliant. What you did so far asks for more! Seeing this live version, the vibe you created really comes across!
This song is top of my Spotify Wrapped for the second year running. I literally believe it's the most well-constructed, musically interesting yet insanely hooky pop song I've ever heard. Everyone I play it to just freaks out at how good it is. So much joy has been gleaned from this one arrangement so thanks a lot Cody!
Really fantastic breakdown and conversation. I'm so fascinated by the creation process here. As someone who works 95% of the time from sheet music to my performers, I wouldn't have even thought of just sharing a demo file as an method of teaching the piece. Thank you for sharing these insights.
Love the fact that Cody was the slightly disapproving spouse to Cory's mustache! lololol That live video is honestly one of my favorite music videos of all time -- the part when the horn players play cards during breakdown makes me lol every time. But I also dearly love the orchestrated version of it from Cory's live album with the Metropole Orkest, probably bc that's how I learned of Cody in the first place
I have been obsessed with this song and "Better" lately, as well as watching all of Cory's "One The One!" videos, so it's really cool to watch you break down an amazing track with him! Love your stuff, hope to see you in concert someday!
As a musician, I appreciate this breakdown so much! Honestly this is one of the best tracks I have heard in soooooo long. At the end, it’s like “of course it’s going to end on the minor major seven” haha. Seriously, keep it up, the world needs more music like this.
YESSSSS. Cody this whole production is incredible. I’m so glad you brought Dynamo in on this. Awesome to see you and Cory just be pals that love jamming and recording. Cant wait to have you on DormInform soon!
I remember stumbling upon this song on the drive home. I'd just finished being assessed at the end of a grueling anaesthetics rotation before my summer break when this song came on and ABSOLUTELY SLAPPED. I rolled down the windows and jammed so hard in traffic. I went from incredible stress and anxiety, to joy and euphoria. I still think about that moment and put on this song when the day's been particularly rough. Truly, sonic medicine. Thanks Cody!
Cody, I absolutely love your writing & arranging sensibilities. It’s such a breath of fresh air! Saw where I’m not alone in this, but the video of this song was my intro to your work as well. Thank you for your art!
I would love to hear some of your thoughts on the version of "Underground" you did with Cory and the Metropole Orkest. The arrangement was one of the most colorful and well crafted I've heard. Great stuff!
Yeah this is very rad. Thanks for taking the time to do stuff like this. There are all kinds of little things to learn watching other people just poke around in their own session(s) and I'm very into it. Thanks man.
Cody, you are actually such a talented musician. Not only are you a crazy multi-instrument player, but you can play and arrange all of these instruments so well
Dude, these songs have had more play than anything else in our house all year. I love it! The musician part is needing out on all this production stuff. At some point you are going to pop and people are going to discover this backlog of wonderful music.
You should realize that you really teach how to produce a song for us amateurs. It is so good to have this opportunity to learn this knowledge. many many thanks and regards
One thing that always arouses my admiration is to see a pro doing his job with lightness and irony. The way Cory expresses himself with his way to move and his physical stance is powerful even before he plugs in the guitar. His way to be on the scene is so intense that i was made to think i was watching Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin. And in this video his funny moustache add something to this IMO.
I love that you’re continuing to make these, it’s nice to finally confirm my guesses on what key sounds you’re using. (Where the Nord is the lord is amirite) I’ve always wondered though was the plan as you wrote the song always to be in that live sound format with the fuller group, or did you think of it more in the album sense and the video and ensemble idea came later?
you are such a great artist. i hope you reach beyond the limits. Your skills are just unreal and of course cory wong too! great one guys. The live versions of Better & Want me back grabbed my attention. Cheers!
Awesome breakdown again! The live recordings are in my top20 listened to on Spotify so I really hope you do more of those with Cory :) Not sure why Cory's bashing his moustache, I think it fit his striped persona perfectly. I was sad to see it go!
Cody - I would be interested to learn more about your approach to songwriting? Cory had a lot of terrific things to say about how thorough you are in providing material to collaborators, but how does it all start? It would be fun to learn about your approach to writing lyrics and music - does it all come together at once or are you pulling together different ideas? Great stuff, really enjoy your work!
This is so great! A question out of curiousity: Is this whole session-breakdown-thing inspired by jacob collier? I saw his ones first and more and more artists seem to do it lately (which is great!) so I was just wondering.
Here are my thoughts on the "CM7 / C#" business: I think your ear is perceiving it as an A7add#9, in first inversion. The motion from C Major to A7 (in first inversion) is a pretty common way to approach and tonicize D Minor with chromatic motion in the bass, dating back all the way to baroque counterpoint. So, for a split second, you're essentially reharmonizing the chord in a way that's familiar to most listeners. The #9 business on top is just some spicy color in addition to all that.
@@CodyFry You put words to it. "The c natural just sort of disappears". You can sing either the main chord tones and it makes sense, or you can sing the low instruments riff, and they both are just sorta "there".
In this "extrovert/introvert" label nonsense. I love how energetic Cory is but he's open and respects different personalities. It's okay to be energetic and its okay to be chill and I've met toxic people who put the quiet ones down.
Yo! I Co-arranged this song for the all male a capella group at Belmont the Pitchmen, its gonna drop in a couple months you should check it out!!! We just dropped our first single last month! Loved the breakdown!
There's something is Cory's laugh that gave a new meaning to life for me. Also my jaws are hurting from smiling at the goodness of the entire video.
And "go ham" on the cowbell I did (or at least tried haha).
So cool to see you breaking this stuff down man. Great work.
Not a question, but the live video for Want Me Back was the one that got me to listen to more of your music 😁
Same!
Same!
Same!
Same here! And same with Better! I even thought that's the original version of Want Me Back!
Same here as well, that is one brilliant rendition of that song!

Been obsessed with this song and Better for 2 years straight. Your collabs are out of this world!

I'm with you on that one - I can't decide which one I like better, they're sooo good! So I'm not gonna and just play them over and over!
You’re a legend for the slap part.
I have been obsessed with this song and "Better" lately, as well as watching all of Cory's "One The One!" videos, so it's really cool to watch you break down an amazing track with him! Love your stuff, hope to see you in concert someday!
Cody, PLEASE breakdown "Underground." It's such an ethereal, unbelievable, out of this world song, man!

how is it that you’re flawless at every instrument (including your voice)?! can’t wait to go to your concerts post covid and watch the magic live :)

Stache Cory is mesmerizing and healing! It's in your ethos brother, bring it back!!!

I am a Korean fan and I love your music

This video/arrangement of this song is hands down my favorite thing you guys have done together! Love it! And thanks for the song breakdown!
I always loved that C# on the bass, always felt it was like using a pitch bend coming from the major 7th and going back.
I have watched the Metropole Orkest version of this song so many times. Thank you for this
Love the moustache !! And the slap bass. Whole arrangement is awesome!
I never get bored of the songs you recorded with Cory! You both are genius! Keep the amazing work up:)

Love this song! Great breakdown.
This song is so so good !
You guys are my favorite music duo of all time!
You’re music is so complex and dense.. I love it man!
Love both versions of this tune. Also enjoyed the humor in the live video.
your the most talanted and best singer there is! Love you cody fry
This was my "Most Streamed Song" of this year, such a master piece!!!! , (And "Better" too!!)
I love that you’re continuing to make these, it’s nice to finally confirm my guesses on what key sounds you’re using. I am so blown alway by these video and cory's music is so great.
Thanks for taking the time to explain parts of your process dude, really insightful stuff!
I absolutely loved this version of the song. Too funky 👍. Great breakdown!
Absolutely love that you do these, thanks!
you are such a great artist. i hope you reach beyond the limits. Your skills are just unreal and of course cory wong too! great one guys. The live versions of Better & Want me back grabbed my attention. Cheers!
Even when you write such a bop, it's a lovingly, deeply constructed piece of music. I can't stand it. I love it.
Me: Do you think I can try to make up my grade?
Teacher: 12:01
This was such an unreal song & video. Hope you guys can collab together again soon!
Love breakdowns like this. Thanks for putting it together.
I and my boyfriend enjoy your music. Greetings from Peru, Latin America.
At last!! I'm excited to see the details of this great song!
LOVE your music Cody!
I love this song 🎶 this music gives me energy 🤩🔥
Dude.. I looooove this content. Please keep it coming!
I want Cory's laugh to be my ringtone
You're so talented, man. Keep these videos coming...they're inspiring.
So pumped for this... thanks bro! Still wish you'd break down vocal parts on camera 😀
Are we going to get another Cody & Cory colab anytime soon?
Hey man, I absolutely love this song. Could you possibly show what kind of percussion you have going on in the finished track?
a joy, as always. thank you sir
3:35 okay nobody else noticing that he literally says "go ham on the cowbell" in the most country place in the USA??? I find that pretty hilarious.
Awesome breakdown again! The live recordings are in my top20 listened to on Spotify so I really hope you do more of those with Cory :)
Not sure why Cory's bashing his moustache, I think it fit his striped persona perfectly. I was sad to see it go!
genius !!
Fanatastic !
Another great song and super cool guitar solo. Did Cory came up with and played that?

Dang…really bummed I missed the show in Knoxville!

Talk about GROOVE
Cody, somerhing is wrong with your screen recording...please fix it in the next video 😁😁
Your vocals sound killer in all your demos. Can you do a video breaking down the vocal chains on your stuff?
Thank you for doing this Cory! Do you think you and Cory will collaborate again in the nearish future?
@@CodyFry that's what we all love to hear 😁
Great work Cody! Just curious as to why you used both Logic and Pro Tools for this project?
@@CodyFry thanks for that Cody good to know! I appreciate it 🙏
Bit of a logic freak out with that "secret track" lol. This is really really cool! I love this song. Top song for 2020 for me btw
Top from Spotify i mean
Amazing song, this should have more plays
When Cory shows up things get funky 😂😂
Seems like your screen recording framerate is lowered than your refresh rate or something? Weird video artifacts when showing pro tools
@@CodyFry could be a RAM issue. Video and audio software at the same time is a lot of memory to manage
THIS IS THE JUICE
Cody I love your music 👍😎 But one question regarding the Logic screen capture: is the „jumping“ of the SPL a Logic or capturing issue?
@@CodyFry yes - it seems your graphics card is too busy. Anyhow you are a great musician!
This man is a genius
That playhead is flying!!! Logic can’t handle this fire track!! 🤩🤩🤩
yes!
Thanks you soooo much 😍
Y U such genius 😭😭😭
That little slap break is deliciously meaty, what did you record it through?
! Hey Cody! Can I have your permission to put one of your songs for my Instagram video?
I can't help but hear many similarities between "Want Me Back" and Earth Wind and Fire's "Getaway". Care to elaborate?
Nah the Mustache made the video 20% more awesomer!
Cory really wants that bass gig
In this "extrovert/introvert" label nonsense. I love how energetic Cory is but he's open and respects different personalities. It's okay to be energetic and its okay to be chill and I've met toxic people who put the quiet ones down.
Well, at least now I know what happened to Squints from the Sandlot...he back Cory Wong
The stach made the video!
Did you get the first spot on the Cory Wong show because he stole the guitar plug in gag from this video for his intro? :-D
Yo! I Co-arranged this song for the all male a capella group at Belmont the Pitchmen, its gonna drop in a couple months you should check it out!!! We just dropped our first single last month! Loved the breakdown!
The Dynamo versions of all these songs are better than the album versions.
I found Waldo again.
Cory do be always wearing stripes, though
Cory’s laugh is simultaneously the fakest and most genuine thing I’ve ever heard
