I recently watched a video where a woman talked about how we shouldn't have guilt about our stash. She suggested we think of it as a curated collection instead. Since hearing that it has made me feel proud of my yarn stash! My current collection takes up a 12 cube unit. I keep it organized by color. It sits in my living room and having it out in the open inspires me frequently.

When my grandfather passed my grandma moved into an assisted living home. She taught me how to knit and when she moves she sent me home with 4 full totes of yarn. I ended up teaching my closest 3 friends to knit and I shared the yarn with them. I’m down to two totes of yarn and when ever I make anything I show my grandma what I made with her yarn. She loves it, it helps us stay close together even though she’s hundreds of miles away and just had her 97th birthday.

I love seeing people's yarn stashes. It's like looking at their Pinterest boards, or seeing their record collection, or their bookshelf. It tells me a lot about what inspires you, excites you, and gets you excited and creative!
And yeah, there's no shame in the size of your stash, and I think it's important that we encourage other fiber lovers to let go of the guilt in the size of our accumulations. I've never thought my husband should be ashamed of the hundreds of videogames he's collected since he was a child. Even though there's many he has never played, or never finished, they all bring him joy. For some reason, women are expected to have a more practical and selfless mindset with our hobbies and collections, and we often feel like we're obligated to justify how we spend our money so we don't appear impractical and selfish. "This was on sale, that's for my niece, this one's going to be resold, that's for my friend's baby, this is for my kids, that's for my husband, and maybe after I've spent dozens to hundreds of hours on all these people I love more than myself, MAYBE I'm going to make something I like.” We don’t have to minimize ourselves and shrink the space we take up.
I love your stash, and how bright and colorful it is! I’m about ready to de-stash a bunch of acrylic yarn and my first hand dyed yarn tests that doesn’t bring me joy anymore, and I’ve been avoiding it for months. My friend died last month and I’ve been in a mega funk since then, and now as I’m trying to claw myself out of it… that might be the first place I start. I think my empty shelves might make me a bit sad though… I may need to fill them back up with stuff I’ll actually enjoy using.
I’m sorry you’re frustrated about organizing your space and not having the furniture you need to store stuff efficiently in a pleasing way. I feel that. For about 4 years I had 90% of my yarn stash in some Sterilite stacking storage totes crammed under my desk, and it was absolutely miserable trying to grab anything from my stash. I don’t entirely love my open bookshelves either. I hate how expensive furniture is. I don’t know how I’m going to reorganize my stash when I part ways with my small rainbow mountain of acrylic yarn… I like your metal basket and your jars, maybe I’ll find something like that at one of these home furniture stores for a good deal and just commit to tackling that this weekend. I don’t like feeling stressed by my collection. All the acrylic used to bring me joy, especially when I had tons of babies to make baby blankets for and my budget was a lot more restrictive. But now I’m just uninspired by it and it’s time to pass it along to someone else. ♥️

My stash is 95% from my mom. My original stash got left behind after my divorce, and my mom decided she couldn't see well enough to knit anymore, so I inherited her stash. Right now, it's all in one big tote, and this has inspired me to sort through it, move it to a better storage solution, and get rid of a lot of it that I know I'll never use. I'm slowly starting to rebuild my own stash now that I can do so.

I love your honesty and full disclosure. Every maker starts with the best intentions of not accumulating too much in the way of ‘extra’ supplies, but it’s just a testament to how much we love ALL things fiber♥️♥️♥️ Life is too short for guilt or embarrassment! If you don’t LOVE your stash, try to pass some of it on to someone who could use it! Be gentle with yourself and just do a little bit at a time if it feels overwhelming. And, BTW, I’ve been a knitting, spinning, felting, weaving, dyeing, stitching, sewing and quilting for over 30 years LOL, I’ve got STASH!!!! And I’m fortunate to have an entire room dedicated to my crafting, but I’ve been there! Organizing is a must (from time to time). If any of your stash makes you feel heavy in your heart or impedes your creativity, it’s time to lighten your load♥️♥️♥️ find charities or school groups who would appreciate the supplies and keep on crafting!!! ☮️💖☀️

You honestly got me so inspired to organise my stash! I’m trying to work through it because I’ve got too much stuff that doesn’t sparkle you know 😂 I would love to be able to have it a bit more visible but I don’t have the furniture for that. I have yarn and fiber in three different bookshelves/cabinets too 🥲 sad to see that your video ended on a less happy note, I really think you did such a good job! Realising you have more stuff than you want to have is progress too. And you did organise it with putting all fiber in one place and most of the yarn in one place, that’s still a big step on the way! Go you!!🎉

My stash reminds me of a good feeling. My mom started my stash about a year ago and every time I go to use one of the skeins, it brings me back to that moment and what we talked about at that time or the “oooo look at this” moments. We live farther apart than we would like. we’re really close so it gives me the feeling like she lives closer again. 🥰

Fun fact about my stash: I have to keep it all locked away in bins with lids because my cat, Brioche (named after the knitting stitch), has this fun little habit of stealing skeins of yarn and dragging them into my bedroom and sometimes under my bed while I'm asleep at night. Sometimes she drops them in the middle of the floor on her way to my bed and sometimes they actually make it under the bed. She also does this with any swatches, projects, and FOs I may leave laying around, so every project has to be safely tucked into a project bag (which will still get dragged around) each night before I go to sleep.

I have a VERY large stash of yarn. Two whole shelves worth, and more for my other varying interests (sewing, spinning, beading, embroidery). BUT I've never felt ashamed of it. I love to jump between then activities that bring me joy. If it means I have to fill a whole room with the materials to keep myself happy, then I don't mind. I also love being able to offer yarn and materials to friends - getting into a new hobby can be expensive. This way I can offer them what they need to get started AND share the crafts that I love with them.

I am proud of my stash. YEs it might seems big to some people put it shows me all the work I did to get it. I use to have a small stash some years ago, because I was sick and couldn't work. But I got healthier, knitting really did save my life. And then I could work. So I bought yarn. I got from a store clerk to a better paying job to better to better. So my yarn stash grew with it. It is also a safety net for me. Since my sickness can come back, depression is not fun and comes and goes for me. So I have a stash for when I cannot work and cannot buy stuff. So yeah, I'm proud of my stash and I treat it almost like a friend who always have my back

    Happy Valentine’s Day to you!!
I love watching stash videos. I like seeing what other people have for their creative endeavors and maybe getting an idea or two on how to store my own. I hope you’re able to clean out your unwanted store materials and yarns soon! I find as nice as it is to bring something new in, it’s just as refreshing to free up space.
I have Too Many Hobbies. Which is both nonsense but true as while they’re fiber related, the materials don’t often intertwine well with each other? My stash is in two rooms + closet + garage bins. Knitting and crocheting yarns are mostly on a 4x4 shelf with a bin of fabric. Knitting machine cones and weaving cones are in a closet and in a box cause cones really don’t store nicely at all. All the fiber is in like four trunks, one’s for all the pretty braids and batts, one’s like five washed fleeces I got for a steal, and two are alpaca blankets that I foolishly thought I could wash and process myself but HA. No. I just need to fork over the money to a mill to make them into roving for me.
I’ve been working hard to work through the stash this year and I think it’s going well so far. I need to reorganize as well since I think I might be able to condense down to have an empty shelf (!!) and I know that will feel so good.

My stash is in a weird half closet space above our stairs. All in plastic bins- 8 bins of yarn and two of fiber. Then a bunch of fiber and yarn squished around those... and some in my bedroom closet. And scraps and WIPs in storage ottomans. And some random yarn in other storage spaces because they were never put away after swatching... I try not to feel guilty about it because it brings me lots of joy! And through my hobbies, I've met great friends and kept myself very busy.

My stash is half (approximately) "fancy" (indie dyed, special fiber) and half acrylic hand-me-overs. They are in varying storage containers awaiting a final storage system when that room is finished. Until then, I moved a hutch/secretary into my room that behind the glass doors I have stored all the yarn that is bookmarked to be used this year. No guarantees that it will, but seeing it displayed should help! Happy making everyone!

This was a lot of fun to tag along for, definitely inspired me work on my own stash organization. At the very beginning of the year I did a bit of an inventory, but I’m thinking about setting it up in a nice way to where I can see it more! Also I’m thinking at the end of the quarter doing another flat lay to see where I’m at because I totally lost count of what I’ve used and what I’ve added already!

Hello, I really enjoyed going through your stash with you. It always helps me to touch and see exactly what I have. When I see a pattern that is perfect for something I have,or I can use a bunch of singles skeins with, I am so much more motivated to get started. Unfortunately, still working on the finishing part.
Don't feel bad about having so much stuff. You seem really dedicated to keeping even the scraps after having used most of the fabric. I wish you didn't feel like you had to use every thread. I am sure that would help with some of the space being taken up. Once you have used the fabric it is okay to throw the crumbs away. But I know you are working on it in your way.
I loved the line. "I didn't say that with my chest. I'm like manifesting." Keep doing your best!! Im glad you are so dedicated to so many crafts. I will be binging your videos.

Currently I have three shelves on my bookcase for yarn and yarn things. I love my stash, except for all the acrylic I bought when it was on sale. Not because it’s acrylic, but because it’s not any textures or colors that I love. I was just really new to crochet at the time and was excited to get cheap yarn 😂. I also have beautiful yarn that I buy for when “I become a good knitter”. Whoever I get to touch and feel the good stuff, I get excited about learning a new technique and challenging myself to get better.

I love the square shelves for yarn storage, it keeps everything from rolling around (and off onto the floor). Recently I decided to install a pegboard system in my craft room to hold all my hanks and flat ball/skeins (also great for mini skeins!), with a few shelves underneath for cakes and skeins that can sit flat. It's such a great system and I highly recommend it if you have the space as it allows you to see everything in your stash at once, so things are easier to find. Either way, no shame about my stash. The backlog of projects I've accrued over the years will keep me busy and will eventually be replaced with more yarn :) Good luck!

One thing I love maybe more than knitting itself is looking through my stash and thinking of what to make with it. I then pull the yarn together and put it in a project bag to knit next. Which works, in theory... if I had that much self control. But normally I'll just get distracted by something new and it'll end up sitting for another 4 months LOL

Your stash is gorgeous! My stash started with two glass ikea cabinets on either side of the TV and has grown into my bedroom into storage cabinets. I would be more depressed without seeing all of my yarn daily. Now to brainstorm how to display FO’s. I have a cat and she’ll chew on them.

I seriously love the color of your love note sweater, it's gorgeous!!
I live in a 1 bedroom apartment so my yarn stash is shoved unceremoniously into an overflowing duffel bag in my closet. I plan to buy some clear plastic bins I can stack up so they're not just hanging out in there. My cat is a little crazy and likes break into where my clothes are stored and I don't want her chewing/eating/furring up the yarn for various reasons. (string related vet emergencies are not fun!) I have other craft supplies (sewing, bracelet making, cross stitch) shoved into 1 ikea cube by the couch and a small ikea craft drawer I keep next to my vanity but it's not great. I'd rather everything be in one area too! The dream would be to have a small office and crafting room.

    Happy Valentines!
My stash is 2 Rubbermaid bins and one of them is just half filled with cotton yarn from my crocheted bra era 😅 I actually should make some dishcloths haha
The rest of my stash is a mix cheap big store yarn and some precious LYS yarns one off. I’m slowly figuring out what kind of yarn I like knitting with the most. So now I have a ton of worsted yarn I don’t feel like using!

Great video! i have seen others recently interrogate the use of the word , and propose instead words like , or to try to minimize guilt or the idea of just needing to use it up. I have recently inventoried my yarn, and i have many many kgs worth. I feel very lucky to have it all as i knit alot. :)

I was totally really overthinking the fact that i have no room to store my Yarn stash other than on the ikea bookshelf that is in my bedroom kinda in indirect sunlight and also have the same shelf in my kitchen for my extensive library of books NOT in the sun so i could switch them but then i don't want my yarn smelling like food!! I like collecting things but having my entire yarn stash facing a window makes me wanna yarn feng shui my room 😂 and also please just think of your stash as your very own yarn fiber and sewing goblin horde and you will feel infinitely better. No need for shame or regret, you are already taking steps to tidy said horde. One step at a time 🖤🧶🪡

I definitely feel the same about spinning--I haven't gotten into it yet simply because I worry that I have no business making MORE yarn. My stash of (mostly sock) yarn is big enough that it has also been keeping me from exploring garment knitting, since I don't have sweater quantities and don't want to be buying more yarn. But I love all the yarn I have and pretty much everything has pattern plans attached, so I'm content to just sit here knitting socks for the next little bit and maybe this fall I'll think about sweater knitting again...

I managed to (finally) organize my stash a few months ago, though definitely not as aesthetically as your own. The goal is now to knit down the stash and start buying more intentionally. I get a lot of my yarn from a local thrift store, so it ends up being a lot of odd amounts, interspersed with sweater quantities. Hoping I'll see the bottom of my stash bins by the end of this year!

I have no stash shame. I call it my “yarn pantry” and it takes up a few bookcases. I’ve organized it by yarn weight, and then by colour within each weight. I work from home and the colourful shelves of yarn have become my inspiration background for conference calls. ❤❤

I have one big shelf that's fully devoted to yarn, knitting accessories, and knitting books and recently took my SQs out of hiding in my closet and onto another bookshelf. I like being able to see it all and mix and match for projects. I don't really feel shame for my stash, although it is large. I'm happy to support small dyers, but I do want to be able to use and enjoy it all, so I am trying to be more intentional in my purchasing.
I'm sorry your sorting took a bit of a turn and hope that it will lead to fully enjoying the things you have.

The Lion Brand ReUp doesn't come in a black, only a very dark blue. However, that yarn makes really great market or reusable grocery bags. It washes well and holds a lot of weight. I have knitted up two large bags with the ReUp yarn and I use them all the time.

Do artists who paint feel ashamed of their tubes of paint? Ha. I think not. Ever heard of S.A.B.L.E? Lots of us, including me, have SABLE. It means Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. That is definitely me! I have to say, knitting your Love Note in pink and then dying it to black is BRILLIANT. You had none of the pain of knitting with black yarn, and yet you get a beautiful black sweater! I'd be interested in hearing more about that project: what sort of yarn, and what sort of dye did you use?

I'm in a similar boat to you when it comes to stash. I do have a cedar chest I got this year for the holidays that I love, and I've got a few baskets worth of stuff. I have a lot of scrap yarn. But I would like a small cubed shelf to display but protect wips. I'm also trying to clear out my stash since most of it was gifted which is truly appreciated but I'd like to get some yarns I picked out that are more hand dyed or hand spun. I also want to start spinning and sewing, haha.

Hi Hayley, I get feeling overwhelmed with the amount of yarn and crafty stuff around. I have made it a goal this year to try and stash down. Right now most of my yarn fiber is stored upstairs in bins in the living room. We have a weird closet that my husband lined with cedar so I can store my yarn there with out and issues. However my yarn has also managed to migrate downstairs to my office and craft room and I would like to get to the point where it is all in one space again. I have managed to make a decent size dent on my sock yarn ever since getting my circular sock knitting machine so that has helped and I have been able to help stash down others by cranking sock tubes for them.

My stash is comfortably stowed away in a cedar dresser with various size drawers and compartments. It came as a part of a set that a couple on fb marketplace was selling. It’s pretty large and I actually just went through bc I’m making my first sweater and wanted to use as much stash yarn as possible. Luckily it’ll be half stash yarn (eventually I reconsidered my second color but feel good that I purchased from my LYS and it was pretty affordable yarn). I do feel that my stash is pretty large and it’s definitely a goal of the year to use mostly stash yarn for projects. I do look at it as more like a collection. Much like books I have that I haven’t read yet are just yet to be read, my yarn is just yet to be used. Honestly I think as long as you’re going through yarn from time to time and asking what still brings joy/suits you then a stash stays intentional and I think that’s the most important thing. Your stash does look very lovely
