Mr. Florent, I completely agree with your assessment of the Winchester 101 manufactured in the early 1970s. In North America, where I live, a multitude of this model are still in circulation. Winchester manufactured three grades: 101 like yours, 101 Pigeon grade and 101 Dimond grade. When you find one with a 90% rating, you have to seize the opportunity. A beautiful 101 is both robust and elegant for a ridiculously low price.
I purchased a 101 XTR lightweight Winchoke in 1985. I shoot it most weekends & it is still a great gun. Probably worth more than I
paid for it too!
Still hunt with a 101 xtr. Its a knocked out 40 years old gun my father bought in his prime. Love it and will hunt with as long as possible. Foreend broke and repaired, buttstock cracked and repaired at pistol grip, barrel selector is brazed so only safety works. Changed pins in the trigger assambley. I am looking at Berettas and Brownings butt always end back with my old hunting buddy 😀
Recently bought a Winchester skeet 101 with 28" barrels in 1969. All I can say is they are great guns. Manufacturing is second to none because they were made in Japan. They are a bit heavier than the modern over and under but it helps reduce the recoil.
Inherited my grandfathers 101 after his passing and took it out the first week and shot 2 pheasants at a game farm. Love the shotgun but love the fact even more that a 35 year old shotgun still shoots probably as well as the day it was purchased. Superior craftsmanship 👌🏻
I had Winchester Newhaven make me a matching pair of 101 Pigeon grade guns in 1977. a skeet gun 28" barrels and a Trap gun 30' barrel. both gave impecable performance. the receivers were silver and heavily engraved. I recently sold them to a collector. both were in excellent condition. the original winchesters were a world class act. they stand up today equal to any modern guns for reliability and finish. Their barrels were way ahead of their time. I have Ceaser Guerini Invictus vii , perazzi mx2000/8 and Miroku and also a Beretta D T 11 to compare them with. I am a definite fan.
I' bought a Win 101 back in 1982; still have' Best shotgun I've ever owned! Skeet, trap. turkey. quail, ducks, geese, the occasional coyote and a few squab almost never had a chance in front of it> Superb!
How long is the barrel? 28”?
I have had my 1966 winchester 101 for a little over a year now. This shotgun is amazing for the money. I've had to customize mine a bit for lop, but it does me well for trap so far.
The best shotgun ever made
I have a Winchester model 101 Classic skeet
with 28 inch ported barrels.Over all it's a beautiful gun. Soft shooting. (Limbsaver boot). Ballance is spot on. I can shot trap, skeet, sporting clays. Or go hunting. Great all around gun. Absolutely no complaints.
Great review mate , I absolutely LOVE my skeet only 101 above the Citori or any other . Has the right fit and balance . Mine circa 1980 , made in Japan . Great success afield as well ..👍👍
I own 2 - one I keep the 410 briley tubes in as it’s a riot to shoot 410 out of. Excited to have my son use the 410 as he comes of age. It will be his ‘learning to shoot’ gun. I am huge fan of Winchester shotguns and old rifles. My family has always bought them and just keeps passing them down. I have never had one that has ever malfunctioned. They’ve spoiled me...
I have two 101 Japan guns i recently purchased at different estate sales. The first a 101 trap made 81-89, and the second a " Ted Williams " sears marked 26" field gun ic/mod
Sears only carried the guns from 1969 to 1971 as they were too expensive for their everyman sales model.
Wonderful guns that sell for around $1200 US. Deals can be found if the seller does not appreciate fine guns.
I used a Winchester 101 when i first started shooting at 10 years old, Then went onto a Beretta when i was a teenager. But after a few years decided to go back to the Winchester and have two of the 101 game guns which i enjoy using and shoot really well with them. You don't need to spend a fortune to have a quality gun that does the job.
Spot on, i've got several old miroku and winchester 101s and a 96, all bought for half what would pay fir a new cheap ata or yildiz, people get too caught up with new guns, old is gold
I have a 101 XTR sporter, multi choke. Action is a bit loose now and bluing a little faded but it must be almost 40 years old and seen plenty of use. I find comb height is only a shade lower than a Browning on the sporter. Trigger pulls no worse either, and is mechanical not inertia. Only problem is spares, and weak point is ejector hammers cracking. A good gun, would have over a new budget gun all day long.
Thanks! I appreciate this, I'm looking for a good double barrel in the USA. This told me, I think, the pre Browning Winchester is something to look for.
I have a 101 grand European trap gun , 30 inch fixed choke , shot a lot and is a bit loose but is a fantastic Japanese classic shotgun ,length of pull was a bit short 14:25 and shot a bit high , lengthened it to 15:00 ,fits better and now shoots point of aim for me ! A keeper !
The Grand European is a Model 501. The model number of mine is G50118. (Grand European Standard 30" fixed choke) It has Inertia triggers not the mechanical triggers of the 101. the model numbers are:
Grand European Featherweight 25-1/2:" G50155FW+
Grand European Trap-Standard 30" G50118
Grand European Trap-sSandard 30" MC G50119
Grand European Trap-Standard 32" G501181

Grand European Skeet 20/70 G50189

The first time I ever shot a clay was a round of skeet with a borrowed 101, thanks to a bit of beginners luck I beat the other shooters with more fancy guns and the 101 owner was fairly hooting with pleasure. That was many years and thousands of clays ago but I still have a soft spot for the old Winchester.
Had one for years. Very good never failed.
Dad brought one in the late 60’s and we pheasant hunted in Iowa with it. We also never paid for a turkey for Thanksgiving or Christmas as dad won turkeys in turkey shoots my entire childhood. It’s a beautiful shotgun that works great!
I have one that I bought from Bass Pro Shops a couple of years ago. I was a model specifically made for and sold through Bass Pro, it looks quite a bit like yours but it did come with a recoil pad. I love it!
Got mine in the 80’s. This thing rocks!
My father had a Winchester 101, 30 odd years ago. it was the best gun I ever shot quail with. I shoot with a Beretta 686 now, wish I had a 101.
I do not have one of these but I do have the Winchester Model 70 bolt action in 270. I love it. I like Winchester a lot
Love the Winchester's bought the diamond grade because it was the only gun in the shop what fit me, i don't shoot it very often now because i shoot the pigeon grade every week or occasionally shoot one of the model 23's, they are old and have done lots of shooting and never ever fail
The Winchester 101s made in Japan were essentially hand fitted guns made to superb standards.
The Pigeon and Diamond grade guns are top tier trap guns. The Grand European model was the top of the line and sold as the Winchester 501 in Europe.
I have 6 Winchester 101 trap guns: 1 basic trap, 1 30" Pigeon Grade, 2 Diamond Grade (30" & 32"), 1 30" Grand European, "& 1 Diamond Grade 32" Un-single. I also have a 27" Win 101 Skeet gun. The price for these older guns has risen 25-40% in the last 2-3 years as more people realize what a great value they represent.
A lot of detractors claim these guns "...kick like a mule...!' Well, none of my guns do so it must be an aftermarket part that causes that kick!
A good friend of mine has won multiple state, regional and zone titles as well as making the All-American team shooting a 32" Pigeon Grade 101.
As others have said, the firing pins break. I have had that happen but not with any frequency. If one does break, it takes longer to remove and reinstall the stock than it does to install a new firing pin.
Dave is right! If you find one and it fits, buy it. You won't regret it
Just inherited a 30" Pigeon grade international trap fixed chokes I.m.and full what a gun. It's exceptional 👏 1979 Olin-Kodensha production.
@@timeverett7828 Mine is a bit earlier and shoots great. Your's is a keeper!!
@@Pynckone I think you're right.
I have 3, pigeon grade 410 w/ 2 skeet barrels, pigeon grade 20ga w/ 2 skeet barrels, and 12 ga w 2 skeet barrels. The engraving on the 12ga is gold inlay. Love them all, esp the 410.
After years of shooting with company weapons recently brought one of these for my cupboard at home as a workhorse and it’s a great bit of kit for the money and I don’t have to worry if it gets knocked around a bit.
got a 101 from 1963 love it
Nice video, David. I have a 20ga. 3” 28” full over modified field grade I take to the trap range on occasion, keep it in a handsome canvas/leather Brescia case, and enjoy all aspects of shooting it. It’s a comfortable change from my Browning Superposed 12ga and 725 20ga. Oh, yes, I’m in the US where I can’t use lead in the field, only drawback.
I just picked one up with very little use. I have owned a few Browning's and I like this equally. It looks like new and feels wonderful in the hand. Winchester with Mr. J.M. Browning help is the West!
The one's made in Japan in the 70'S and 80'S are exceptional guns. With outstanding quality and workmanship. Used prices just keep climbing higher on these models. Very sought-after today.
YES Sir,
I bought Broning made in Japan full chock with steel shot,
I did 20 timeee
got one 1970 never been shot
I own the Japanese made 101 in a .410 over under . My gun belonged to my dad . For the longest time I thought the stock was made of plastic. So shiny, Its in my collection now and will keep it for my sons when my time runs out . I have taken it out to shoot doves only once. I can't remember my dad ever shooting the gun . Can anyone give me information on how to properly date my rifle, thanks Pete
@@petedetects7012 contact Winchester they can tell you.
@@timeverett7828 thanks Tim , I'll look into that .
I just got the 101 pigeon/trap it is an amazing gun 0 recoil and on the mark!
I have this gun since last year. Made ca 200 shots, it works out good, the recoil is ok, the precision satisfying. Best regards Ronny
I have a 26” 12ga skeet model from the 1970s that I purchased used in the 1980s. I love it. As you describe, it’s a solid, handsome gun. Shoots well. I also have a Beretta Silver Pigeon and I love them both, but prefer the Winchester. You reviewed it fairly. I think you’d have to spend 3x to get a superior O/U.
I have a Winchester101 xtr lightweight game, has to be the best handling gun l have owned , Beretta's and miroku,s I have owned in the past, but would never part with this one.
There are plenty 101,s out there some in really good condition, spares maybe a problem ,but most gunsmiths can make bits, excellent buy at sensible money👍
Gruew up reading about AJ smoker and his 6500, as a kid i always liked the look of the 101 and 6500. Some years later bought a 6500 sporter used it for everything. Honestly think if winchester start making this gun again with steel proof barrels it would sell very well.
Just purchased a new 101 Ultimate Field, 28 inch. Made in Belgium. Going to shoot some clay next weekend! Seems to handle very nicely and seems build to last. Looking forward to hunting some ruffed grouse with it.
Love the review. Just about to buy a 101. Can't wait to try it out
I have a Grand European (Model 501) which I have been using regularly for 40 years. So far a broken top lever catch spring and 3 sets of firing pins. The pins pit because they stay contact with the primer on firing as there is no spring to withdraw the pin. A local gunsmith does hard coated pins but for Miroku's (same problem) but there are not enough Winchesters around to justify making hard coated pins for them
I have had mine a 101 sporter from new over 30 years old now, I use it as my weapon of choice for game and clays. The only down side is on a days game shooting it does get a bit heavy as the day goes on. But as you say bomb proof, and wouldn’t part with it for anything
Or as an alternative an Indy Shadow they seam to be coming up regularly now as their owners are at the giving up shooting stage of life. A good one can also be had for around £400. I love mine for sure.
Got a 30" 6500. Love it!
Got one as a bit of fun bullet proof.. Really enjoy your videos. Keep em coming. A video over lead and using aim point for different ranges would be interesting. To me anyway..
Well done.
I've been shooting a Winchester Diamond Grade Trap 101 since 1987. Great gun, only problem is it likes to break firing pins
That's a Belgian version produced by FN in this model year.
@@timeverett7828 1987 was kodensha plant gun
@@MR12GAUGE ok u right ✅️
Hi David we have 3 of these winchesters me my son and dad great gun for beginners love it.
I've never owned or fired one, but here in the USA they're held in very high regard.
I own 3 101’s all XTR silver pigeon 2 lightweight and 1 featherweight. They are mechanically as fine a shotgun as I have ever seen. There are others with better fit and finish but none are better mechanically. They are just fantastic in every regard. Not sure what 450 pounds equates to in US dollars but the ones I mentioned are in the $1700.00 and up to well over $5000.00 depending on condition, gauge, and originality including cases and boxes that they were supplied with when new.
I have a Winchester Diamond grade trap 32” and love it….
I want owned a 20 gauge 101 pigeon grade. I’m still trying to buy it back from the guy I sold it to. It was a great little Gun.
I have an old Nikko SV712, which from what I’ve read was made in the same maker of the 101 and is supposed to be essentially the same the gun. It certainly looks like it. I like it, but as we can’t use lead shot much more in California I’m a bit restricted as I haven’t wanted to shoot steel in it.
I have a 101 xtr and love it. It is my first gun only had it year but it is a great gun and good fun.
Thank you David.
i had 101 25 years ago GREAT gun for the price did all i wanted and never went wrong atall
Looking for my first gun and the Winchester is on the list now , also lamber nothing to fancy as you say but a good starter 👍🏻
I recently bought a mint condition "made in Japan" model 28 inch, with full and mod chokes and started shooting sporting clays...gun works flawlessly, and every time we shoot my scores go up...For the price of a new "turkish" shotgun I think it was the better choice....
My father shot one many state championships. Until he got his first Perazzi comp 1 , then it was game over for the 101 , no comparison
Been shooting my 101s for 5 years in competition with decent success. Just got a Perazzi Comp 1 and love everything about it except I still shoot my Diamond Grade Un-single slightly better. So following the same path as your Dad. I don't know what I'll use in competition this season yet!
Pynckone I shoot his comp 1 now he passed 4 years ago 94 / I just modified the comp trigger I put a mx12 trigger in the comp , 1 housing it’s 32’’ full and improved mod , I used to shoot a 101 trap bought it at the PX in Germany 73 for 220 brand new, dads was a 1963 101 ,
@@boarzwid1002 Just had my Comp 1 worked on by Giacomo.. Trigger work and had the case hardening redone. They also repaired a broken chip on the forend. Looks like they recheckered and refinished everything. The gun looks new! I complete with my Win 101 Diamond Grade Un-Single or my DG O/U. Still getting the Comp 1 dialed in. The Comp 1 isn't marked on the barrels but by measurement I believe the barrels to be full and extra full. When I am on the bird they break into a cloud of orange dust....but I still shoot my 101s a bird or 2 better! They are all fun!
Pynckone nice Giacomo does assume work, once you get it dialed in , it’ll be a real killer mine with 18.4 bore shoots 1oz better than 1.1/8 I would like to try 7/8 oz , Giacomo was my fathers go to guy,
6500 mins 2, legendary Sporter, weapon of choice for the sadly deceased AJ “smoker” Smith. Very very good guns, built regardless of cost using quality materials, not to a price point, with a gold trigger and gold game birds that look like pterodactyl’s.
God AJ smoker, i haven't heard that name in a while. Used to read about him with my dad back in the 80's he used a 6500 also.
YES Sir,
I bought Broning made in Japan full chock with steel shot,
I did 20 times
love me a winny!!! ..... i will eventually find a decent pigeon grade 12g .... but it has to be spotless!! 😁😁 great guns!!
I have a Winchester 96 expert skeet put a combe resizer on it and my daughter learnt to shoot with it great gun fire the money £500 paid for it it was like new when I got it shot thousands ove shells through it stil going strong can't complain it's made ove good material
Greatest gun ever made!!!!!
I wish we could get them for that cheap in Canada!
By the way, 28" bbls,. I also bought improved cyl, modified and full chokes for each barrel.
very very nice shut gun❤❤
Lovely piece of history mate.
I'd buy but I'm in the US
I need a short on the firing pin replacement. Seems to fire soft on the top pin at the most unfortunate times.
can u use a trap gun ..for shooting slugs ?..thanks
Love mine
Hi I’ve just bought a 101 xtr light £220 Hopefully it will serve well on the woodys and the clays.
We've had my grandfather's for decades. It's solid, but noticeably heavier than modern o/u's.
I love the old 101s and am curious about your opinion of the new winchester 101 made by FN in Belgium? I have one along with my brownings and love it
I purchased a new Winchester 101 sporting alittle over a year ago. 30" barrels with 5 invector plus chokes, lovely piece of wood. It's a clay busting machine. Luv it!
$1500- $3000 in the USA
I own a Winchester Supreme 12 ga. chambered for 3" 26" barrels beautiful wood.
Any chance of a review of the the selct sporting range? They seem to be ignored for some reason.
Are the Nikko 5000's the same as the 101?
I was thinking about picking one up for my father but I saw some people complain about the fore-end cracking and having a lose fit on some online reviews from places like Cabela's and Bass Pro, so I got a really nice used Beretta 682 Gold E Sport model instead for $2,000.
The new ones are not the same as the older ones.
The quality of the wood is much higher quality on the original run of them and I have never heard of that issue. The fore end pin does walk on mine and I could see that causing a problem
@@mattnw42is the new one good for hunting mate?
@@zeebaars-6fishingI know two people that have new ones. The one uses it for pheasant and small game. He does quite well with it.
My old model is set up for braking clays, but I would have no qualms taking it for flushed birds.
Could you do a video one day about Lanber shotguns? Thanks!
Id also love to see a video on lanbers
Premier Guns did a great one on Lamber 👏
Yes we do have a few Lanber films coming out over the next few months so keep your eye on the Channel and yes they will be better then others that are all ready out there. Thanks for you comment TSC Team.
Muy elegante arma 👌👍 bellaza
Love the old Winchester 6500...have a peach or two in the cabinet...couple more to get to complete the collection..new guns don't do it for me
My first gun 101 sporter diamond grande 😜😜😜 multi choke
great guns...very well balanced and sweet handling, my japanese made classic doubles is very similar, and theyre worlds apart from a Lanber!
Nowt wrong with a good Lanber fella. They'll hit as well as anything else and last a lifetime... just not as trendy these days. I got rid of my B525 (not using it) ended up getting a cheap double trigger Lanber and love it... wouldn't swap.... 😂... I've probably been sniffing too much stock oil again.
@@MKChase-uj9vx yep theyre a good gun. My first tbh bit dont handle like a 101
@@philwhiting4035 agreed, lanber are a good gun, but a fair fair way off a 101

i have an winchester 96 xpert that is very basic to a 101
All the older winchesters brownings and Mirokus that are from the 80s are still a better buy then a new turkish gun and can be had for the same money although they’ve seen a lot of work there still put together and finished better then the new turkish guns and sadly over looked these days as warranty sells more then a reputation
100% i own several and wouldn't consider any new gun under 2000£ before a tidy vintage 101/miroku
@@MR12GAUGE everyone knows if you want one gun for life miroku/browning is the way to go there most reliable action on the market
£450 Winchester or £450 Lanber ?
If you only had that as a budget, which one would you buy ?
Hard choice as they are both very good guns and both worth every penny of that £450. Thanks TSC Team.
Are you kidding us?? Witchester 101 for sure!!!!
If the 101 is in good condition i'd take it over any gun new or old upto 2000£, lanber are a good gun- but a 101 is a far better gun
That was my first gun it spent a lot of time in the gunsmiths broken hammer spring broken firing pin and occasionally would double discharge, wouldn't buy another.
I have a Niko Shadow made in the same Miroku factory that made the 101. It looks exactly like the 101 except IMO there is better wood on the Niko. It's a great gun but it has fixed chokes.
Twenty years after WW II, firms were asked by the US government to assist Japan's manufacturing base to recover from the war. Winchester granted a license to Kodensha to
have the 101 produced in Japan under a joint venture company called Olin/ Kodensha. (Guns manufactured by this company are marked with that name on the breech in front of the trigger guard.) The early guns were practically hand built and are extremely high quality, superior guns. Eventually, the Kodensha company requested Winchester to manufacture their own line of guns for sale exclusively in Japan. Thus the Miroku was born.
The reason why the Miroku's had better wood is the superior wood supplied by Winchester was selected and set aside by Kodensha for use in the Mirokus. Winchester ended it's production in Japan over this breach of good faith.
@@Pynckone miroku wasn't kodensha they are a seperate altogether, that's nikko at kodensha, olin/winchester also wasn't happy about the japanese making and exporting guns to the states under different names, then eventually just exported nikko branded guns, it all fell apart, sad days but a very cool history
@@MR12GAUGE I'll buy your explanation. I read the information in my aforementioned post years ago in a trapshooting group. His explanation may have been off a little. I always wondered because the dates of the wood selecting controversy and the cessation of Japanese manufacture differed by several years.
Como tener una belleza de arma
Is the Winchester an ejector
IIRC it depends on the model. The higher grade ones were eject fired only.
Great guns, definitely not like a lanber though i dont think the two can be compared in terms of build quality or reputation. I'd say that today you'd need to spend more than your average browning beretta money to buy better than that 101
Is Winchester 101 made in spain or Japan? Is the Winchester super grande also a 101 but just with a diffrent name on it?
The old Winchester 101 was made in Japan at the Olin Kodensha plant
Japan is were they were made.
Bună seara cât costă o armă?
I'll take four of them for 450.00 please.
Yep I've got one,,it was my mates gun and he was offered £200 for it as a trade in,,I bought it off him for the £200,,bloody bargain,
Tom USA
I bought it at a Rod and Gun Club In Germany while stationed then in the Army. It was 1973. It is a great gun. Dove, quail, pheasants, ducks, geese, grouse, and more skeet than I could count. It has always gone bang. Love it. I still shoot it every week at skeet. I shoot clays with a new 101.
Winchester is a gun for 2 lifes
Can Winchester's Model 101 over and under shotgun be called "historical"? I think so.
👍🇨🇱
Now the Winchester is made in Belgium and the Browning are made in Japan FN owns both of them Browning is made buy the company that use to make the Winchester and the Winchester has higher quality standards than Browning that came rite out of one Brownings service managers mouth when I was having problems with my Browning 425 ultra sporting clay I had I sold both my Brownings and bought a ruger red label way better gun than the Browning and the friends of mine that have the new Winchesters hasn't had a problem with them so I'm thinking of buying a Winchester
