      She was always nice to me when we interacted but also seemed very odd. She is an artist(worked in the arts department) so it was nothing abnormal for that department. I worked in the photography department/student relations, taking stock photos for advertising and running the black and white photography lab. So early 2000s. I was in the classrooms all the time taking photos of students.

    Unsurprisingly, this sparked some controversy at the time. Lead man C. Thomas Howell responded by saying the movie is very "innocent", but I think he meant "oblivious"... Despite poor critical reception, the movie went on to make a decent little profit.

      Ya if you really think about almost no movie is safe from offending somebody. While I think we should be mindful I just think the world is getting to soft and people need to relax. Nobody is going after Robert Downey for his role in Tropic Thunder. You can go after Zoolander and sea of other flims. Hell even White Chicks. That being said I wouldn't go near a film like this in present day. The point is to make people laugh so why upset people. You won't ever see a film like this ever again.

    My eldest aunt who was my English teacher brought me to movie theatre and this was the movie. :) I was too young as 11 who doesn't know anything between black and white at that time but now (46!) I guess my aunt liked that actor, haha. She is now over 80 and miss her as I live in Sydney and she in New York.

      yeah ik it wasnt like some jojo chokalingham (mindy kalling brother) stuff - it was supposed to prove that other people dont have life necessarily easier than you think - black americans in this instance. i just wish they went abt it more carefully like RDJ in tropic thunder cos that was made decades later and people understood it ironically against that, but the makeup was poor here. thats really my only criticism 🤷🏾

    FUNNY STORY. Wayyyy back in high school, something very similar, but not entirely, happened to my friend Vito. Except, he applied for black scholarships on purpose and he was actually awards one when he was white and they did not know. So he banked on it and went to college as himself. Did not do blackface or any of that. At some point, the scholarship found out he was not black and pulled his scholarship money and he sued the pants off them for being race-ist. Long story short, they settled out of court and he got a free ride all the way through grad school.

    I remember this movie, and my take on is this shows how the Aboriginal natives or American Indians are imitated, loved and hated all at the same time. The so called white men won't admit there fascination with the so called black men, only a few will, but this movie proves their fascination. This was 1986 before the term African American was coined 😂🤜🏾🤛🏾🪶🏹🪓🐢❤️👍🏾

    I saw this on video tape in the Eighties it wasn't that bad. Apparently written by the writer and creator of Ellen and The Wonder Years. As the lead actor said it showed the racism black people went through unlike other movies and TV shows with blackface.
