I do the teacher vs class also but we do it daily. I have a list of rewards written out and if they win at the end of the day they get to cross off a letter. When all the letters are crossed off they earn that reward.

I purchased inclement weather games, I have alternative incentive seating and taking it away seems to work. When I have the budget I'm going to try the doorbell, my call backs have fizzled out after a month with 5th graders. You are awesome! As a 2nd year teacher I have learned so much from you! My principal said my classroom felt safe and inviting!
One thing that works well with 2nd graders is "I Spy a 2nd Grader who is __________(quiet, respectful, ready to go etc.). I choose someone who is listening and then they get to choose someone who is also listening. Then, they both get to move their clip up or put beads in the class jar. I especially like to use this when lining up. I find that it motivates them to work together. I've used it for large class sizes ( 30 +) and a small class. They love it!

Great ideas! I teach three 5th grade math blocks. I´m going to try teacher vs class with each block and at the end of the week they will get additional math game time. They love it when we do math games on rainy days for indoor recess and are always asking if they can have more math game time. For my homeroom, I ordered a cute 3D Mason Jar in which they are trying to fill it with paw tokens (Pawsome Behavior! My theme is paw prints/dogs in my classroom) When they fill the jar, they get to vote on ice cream party or pizza party. They earn these during homeroom activities like morning time, going to resource/lunch and coming back, lining up, etc. My other two classes have voiced that they wish I did something with them for having good behavior and work habits. I can´t wait to get it started!
I do a 4x5 sticker chart, but I have them use those bingo dabbers. They get a dot each day they are on track and behavior is good. (I teach RSP-pull out btw). Then once they complete a row, they get a prize, and the prizes get progressively larger until they fill their card. Then they start over again. It works out to a row a week if the behavior is good. For that day to day group, some dynamics do great, others need a mini candy treat (a few smarties or a starburst square) to get them through.
Last year I “celebrated” students for a variety of reasons with bubbles. At the end of the year, I awarded the first ever Bubble Awards. My go-to is stickers. I create a series of sticker cards. Students earn stickers for whatever. Once they accumulate 20 stickers, they choose a prize from the prize box. I tried the bubbles AND stickers at the beginning of the year, but it was a bit too much.

Each student gets a birthday sticker…August babies get it on the first day of school, May, June, and July babies get theirs before I close out the sticker cards for the year. I need to manage the “interruption” of the prize box and the new card a little better, but I think the overall outcome is worth it.
The kids have their own trading card economy at our school “character cards” which they can earn for good character, it’s also with their favorite characters on the cards. Every week they can earn them if they succeed throughout the week.
I have used attention grabbers but really after a while they kids hot bored using them as did I. I really like your whole class vs the teacher approach.. Need to think about some nice inexpensive prizes.
Hello! jJust subscribed. I am a first year teacher this year and trying to plan out my classroom management techniques. For the classroom economy- if you do tickets how do you monitor it? Are they just in charge of their own tickets and if they lose it then they don't get to turn them in? How do you manage that? Also- for stickers- is there a separate page for each week and then you just label each page for what week it is and they start a new page weekly? I love these ideas and am leaning more towards the sticker idea as it seems a bit more organized!

I bet your students are missing you like crazy and I do not blame them . I notice these are all extrinsically motivating. Is there anything you do to instill intrinsic motivation? What about the kids that have developmental reasons that blurting out is much harder for them to control? Or kids on IEPs. Or kids that need wobble seats not as a reward but as a need? Does the whole group miss out on the points for the one or two students that struggle?
I’m sure she takes this into account for each individual student. I doubt she can really go into individual strategies while still protecting her students privacy. She opened the video up with “there are no right answers, find what works for you” :)
For these students, I have a chart that is broken up into each section of the day where they can earn a 3 (excellent) 2 (good) 1 (needs work) and I tailor it to whatever that individual student needs to work on like calling out, completing assignments. They set a goal at the beginning of the week and if they hit their goal, they have chosen their reward. One of my students chose being the PE assistant for a lower grade PE class. Another chose being a media assistant for a lower grade class. I have one student that chose additional time on the Coding website and another chose extra recess time, which I worked out with the grade level going out to recess afte r us so they are attended to. I was afraid the other kids would think it wasn´t fair but we have talked about fair doesn´t mean same, it means giving everyone what they need to be successful and they really get this.
If you're looking for a resource for intrinsic motivation strategies, I'd highly recommend Marvin Marshall's book Discipline without Stress, Punishments or Rewards. It works for a lot of different age levels too!
Do you ever find that students get frustrated with that one kid who will not stop earning you points? My class is at frustration level because he’s the one ruining it for them every time , even if they encourage him not to.
I also recommend doing the three to one rule with this. This means that you never do more than three positive before bring up something to work one. It also works in reverse that you don't do three negative before giving a positive. Each of these help to keep the challenge up for students so they stay engage, but limiting them giving up because it is too challenging.

I work at an after school program where behavior is a huge issue and this video helped me so much. I honestly cannot thank you enough!!!!

If it ever gets there and it is consistently one kid, that’s when I will have him call his parents and we will try and mediate the problem on our own.
