Ménerbes is a hilltop village in Provence, France, that is famous for its beauty, wine, and truffles. It has a long and turbulent history, dating back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and was the scene of a five-year siege during the wars of religion. Many of the old houses and the Citadel still stand today, reflecting the village’s heritage. The village has also been a magnet for artists, such as Picasso, de Staël, and Mayle. 📚 History:
Ménerbes, a village in Provence, France, has a history that goes back to the Paleolithic era. It was named after Minerva, the Roman goddess, and belonged to the Papal state of Comtat Venaissin . During the religious wars, it was a Huguenot bastion and withstood a long Catholic siege . Many historical buildings, like the Citadel and the 16th and 17th century houses, still stand. The village has been a magnet for artists, such as Picasso, Maar, and Mayle.

Visit the charming village of Ménerbes and admire its historical buildings, such as the Castelet, the house of Dora Maar, and the churches. Explore the ancient Abbey of Saint-Hilaire, a former convent that dates back to the 13th century and has a sober and elegant architecture. Ménerbes is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of Southeastern France. The walled village on a hilltop in the Luberon mountains, foothills of the French Alps, constitutes the main settlement in the commune. In 2017, it had a population of 990.
