Both Trek and Specialized have plenty of sizes. That's not a unique feature. My Trek is a M/L. The Atherton bike does look awesome! But calling it affordable is ridiculous!

On the similar note, why is bike market so global and seemingly one-fit-all oriented? Looking at cars, every country or at least region has own market with local production, every big company offers different models for different regions. Say, Toyota have Hilux Champ for Asia and Land Cruiser 70 elsewhere, Chinese and European Audi Q6 are completely different, what is Dacia in some places, Renault in others, and so on. Yet Trek Session is just Trek Session everywhere and Marino as boutique as they are shipping worldwide too.

To me, 'affordable' is what I am willing to spend and my affordable is other people's budget or expensive. I prefer to live by 'value' and no matter where the decimal point is in the price that I paid, if I get high quality for what I was willing to spend, then that is good value to me. The bottom line is, to each their own.

    • @LaurentiusTriarius

Not sure how to define it, I could afford much more expensive bikes than I ride.
Affordable should be something that everyone could theoretically buy, so let's say take your country's average salary and figure out what you can buy with that without sacrificing any primary need.
So I guess most people would have a budget of 5$ or something...😂

Affordable means what disposable income you can sacrifice without it impacting your day-to-day life. But I think good value for money also joins this.

    Affordability tests…
Test #1 - Using a debit card or paying off the credit card balance as soon as you get home.
Test #2 - Nobody at the shop is pretending you’re likely to earn a yellow jersey at the next TdF.
Test #3 - You are 100% comfortable rocking up to the shop with whatever you happen to be wearing.
Test #4 - Happy to secure it up with an average lock.
Test #5 - A single cynical utterance if the bike gets nicked… begrudgingly buy a replacement of comparable value.
Test #6 - Comfortable checking it in for a flight… in the box it came in.
Test #7 - Use is not necessarily restricted to dry and sunny days.

    • @RC-fp1tl

4-6 aren’t valid. Most people wouldn’t know what an expensive bike brand is by the name on the box, and I wouldn’t even leave my $2000 bike locked outside.

Atherton's affordable superbike is neither affordable nor is a superbike. Almost £5000 for an alloy bike with RS Dominion/Deluxe select, a mix of NX/GX groupset, A4 Dominions and £600 Stan's wheels? Get out. Even if that frame is some sort of industry-breaking miracle of engineering (which it's not) a top end suspension, drivetrain and wheels on any other frame will make a lot more difference for 99% of riders. It's just a boutique brand for snobs.

for 5k there are so many options...but i think we need to get rid of the idea that 5k is acceptable and the entry into a sport that should not cost a lot....riding a bike is like walking or swimming ... everyone can do it and it should be accessible....i bought a 2nd hand Giant X Trance because in my country bikes are very expensive due to being more a niche market and import cost...so for 1-2k it is hard to find a new bike with great components...people use creditcard etc which i do not like....so 2nd hand market is only option....i personally can afford a 5k bike, but choose to not to spend that much....i believe a bike is only as good as the rider is...

So in the mid 2000s I got a full suspension bike with hydraulic disc brakes for about 2.000€ (3.000€ with inflation now)- at the time an "enthusiast level bike" way above the average hardtail with V-breakes but not a race bike. When I look at something comparable today I see prices between 5-7.000€. And the actual "affordable" bikes below that are in the price range of what used to be high spec/enthusisast level. A Yamaha YZF 450 motocross bike was about 9-10.000€ 20 years ago- and is now about 11.000€. Something doesn't add up here

Good point about Atherton bikes!!! Good to see GMBN not just sit on the fence! But another con of Atherton bikes is are would they not also be really hard to sell with that many sizes? As surly the sizes become extremely specific which surly narrows the market when or if you want to sell it on…. But no way you can call a non ebike that’s over 4K that’s got rockshox dominion forks “affordable” more like a complete rip off seeing there also technically a direct sales brand lol

Looooove how Rich asks very good questions without being afraid touching the subject. Outrageous calling that bike affordable, it was far from Super bike. Affordable could be about 3k, no more and not GX/NX... 95% of people do not care about 5-10 cm difference in sizes. I did not know that Propain are so affordable! Affordable =within a budget of discretionary income proportional to the median income in your area minus living expenses. Affordable never means getting into debt over an overpriced commodity, that is what these bikes generally are.

In layman's terms Type 1, 2, and 3 anodizing are MIL spec terms which in the simplest terms determines thickness. Anodizing is a chemical conversion of the outer layer of the aluminum (or other base metals) Type 3 is deeper and more resistant on wear items.

I bought a base spec Megatower v2 for hard enduro riding and I destroyed/wore out stock parts and some parts were no where near up to the task - ending up costing me much more to replace everything with good parts that can handle it.
Where as someone who is trail riding an light build will be perfectly fine and be fit for purpose.

  • @VFXBishop
    @VFXBishop 5 місяців тому +2

Affordability really comes from a comparison from near peer products. If Bike A is "Affordable" and Bike B is "Average", there should be a relative scale for reference. Like if a 100% custom built bike with similar spec parts is $5000 and you're getting that same custom fit for $3000 with a similar spect of parts, then I'd agree that's "Affordable" for a custom built frame. But it really does come down to frameset for frameset cost in my opinion and Affordable is a relative term and really does need a frame of reference.

  • @PuffinPass
    @PuffinPass 5 місяців тому +2

When saying "affordable" you should really preface it with the word "relatively" as being relative to other bikes in this category. When you fail to make that clear you really are opening yourself up to a lot critique about what affordable really means.

I think we are missing the point here, that Atherton bike is special and looks soooo sick. I want one!! Yes, you can get an alloy bike with similar spec and geo for considerably less, but it won't be as special or turn heads quite the same. The Atherton won't necessarily make you ride faster or shred harder than similar spec reasonably priced bike, but if you want something to make you feel special, turn heads in the bike park and have strangers stop you to say "nice bike dude!!!" then it's going to cost a little more. You can't have both. Usually a special bike like this would be upwards of £7,000 so this is a reachable dreambike for anyone who has been drooling over the carbon Atherton bikes thinking they are out of reach. I think we should be a little less negative towards what Atherton are trying to achieve here and take for what it is. I think the crew at Dyfi have smashed it! It is arguably better looking than the carbon versions. It is bad ass and I'll say it again, I WANT ONE!!!

The main problem is that when you sell something as affordable, you just can't justify the extra cost for the super variable sizing since most people will be more than happy to have a close enough one to their size. It's particularly sad to see theese guys genuinely tryng to do something great for the MTB community and have it fall out of grace for a mere wording mistake, if they succeed they'll bring custom frames closer to the average market wich is great for everyone, we should be rooting for them not tryng to get them off the game.

I’d say the term ‘affordable’ is both subjective and very much context specific. The price of a very expensive bike is seen as affordable when it comes to a car.
In that sense you can’t compare something like an Atherton to a mass produced bike, saying they’re both bikes. Considering the costs to build a (semi) bespoke bike it can be considered affordable while a mass made bike of the same price would be seen as at least mid tier.

Think how much bigger then mtb sports would have been if all the companies actually manage to produce good bikes much cheaper.
More sponsor money for prof. the list goes on forever. Maybe those new upcoming could afford the insurance when competing abroad.
Most people dont ever bother even trying because the entry level bikes are so expensive to give it a shoot and hopefully get hocked.
Roughly 3000 usd (+taxes for lot of people) for entry level bike with bottom spec it a NONO for most people.

I think a rethink on how you would categorise affordable may need to be undertaken. The Atherton bike is THEIR affordable one in their range of what are really mega-bikes. For 4k£ you can get a full sus Canyon neuron Ebike with xt drive train, Bosh cx motor, Rock shox pike, Dt swiss whells etc etc.. Now please tell me where is a 4grand worth of aluminium on that Atherton frame???Custome sizes blablabla ...Nobody cares or knows what chain stay, seat stay lenghts they need or want !! It's a stupid gimmick. People just buy M or L sized frames and that's it... Another cool looking bike made for literally No one.

Its like comparing a hand-build sports car from a small manufacturer to a international car brand. allot goes into making the manufacturing cheaper, outsourcing work and parts to other countries and so on. Who ever got a custom anything, knows it is expensive and righly so. Here you are buying an almost hand made bike from people you know, trust and admire - that comes with an extra value and price. May not be a Super bike because of the components but a Dream bike - unaffordable for most - non the less. Components can be changed over time the frame is for a lifetime - literally.

When making a statement like affordable in this context. Preface it with, for "bikes in this category, made from this type of manufacturing technique" this is an affordable bike.
It then, maybe so, that the Atherton bike is affordable "relative" to other bikes in its category.
However, i dont know this for certain.
And as demonstrated in this video you can purchase a similar bike for much less.
Therefore it is down the purchaser to determine whether their specific manufacturing techniques, the brand etc are deemed valuable enough to pay additionally for it.
Therefore, affordability in this context is subjective. But it is not subjective when considering the whole MTB market because riders as whole dont have a choice whether a manufacturer decides to charge the consumer.
The only way manufacturers will reduce their prices is if collectively we stop purchasing overpriced MTB components.

What is Affordable is extremely subjective, irrespective of whether something is a good value or not. In the case of this Atherton bike, it doesn’t really seem like it is affordable or a good value.

    "Affordable SuperBike."
I don't care what sort of bike you call it. Words are fun but they only mean whatever meaning we collectively give them. We could call it an "affordable BadAssBike." Or an "affordable HyperDescenderBike." Or an "affordable BougieBike." Or an "affordable BestPossibleAlloyBikeInTheWorld." All those are titles that have a similar grandiosity as "SuperBike."
No matter what that second descriptor is though, "affordable" has a fairly-agreed-upon meaning and the S170 is not accurately described by the meaning "affordable" has held. Not now and not ever in the history of that word.
"Worth it?" Potentially. That's a much different concept that requires some teasing out.
    Great warranty
Sizes aplenty (which I think IS a big deal)
Unique geometry/build/features that satisfy some of the most capable downhill bike racers ever to race a bike in a bike race down a hill
Stylized look (which I don't really care about but aesthetics are valued by many so they command a price)
Unorthodox manufacturing method which has yet to prove itself to be superior to other methods (though novelty also commands a price).
I could ALMOST see my self buying one of these bikes if it came in a travel size appropriate for my much more flat part of the world. It would be the only bike I bought for at least a few years. A great warranty and a great fit go a long way to making something "worth it." No more worries in the bike department. Keep the tires in good shape, drivetrain clean and lubed, and suspension maintained and you'll ride your legs, ass, and wallet off for the next handful of years. If I didn't have to worry about a bike because a brand backs it up and it fits me well then I also don't have to be looking for the next bike.
Something that is worth it - "it" being the cost of getting it - I think could be called a "good value." This bike seems fantastic and I trust that it is based on the people who made it. This bike seems ultra-capable. This bike seems sturdy and like it's going to be functional for "the long haul."
This is a Good Value SuperHyperDescenderCrusherExtraordinaireBike.
    It is not affordable.

@@fugoogle9757 Sorry for the long rant, lol.
I had been thinking' a lot about this sort of stuff...and then this conversation came up in this video. It kind of all rushed out of my hands before I had too much time to think about trimming it down.
I work (more than) full time in music production. It's an endless thing to make it work. There are a lot of parallels between music production and mtb. Things can get crazy expensive for no apparent reason other than "it IS expensive."
Reinforce that with a dose of "you have to constantly upgrade" and my frugal ass starts to feel surrounded-by-consumerism (at best) and assaulted-by-predatory-marketing-and-product-design-aimed-at-creating-incompatibilities-to-force-extra-purchases-in-order-for-the-user-to-still-be-able-to-participate (at worst).
Fuck. I just want a good handful of microphones and a good short-travel trail bike that fits my wonkily-shaped ass (and rest of my body).
...and there's another long one. I guess there are still a lot of thoughts bubblin' away in my brain on this subject!

Custom Super Bike. I haven't gotten on with understanding them or why? A non "custom" fitted bike is customizable in literally every way for, id dare say, 95% of riders. In the world. The other 5%, that those very small changes are for or matter...they get paid to ride so...Even geo changes can be customized, on a non custom bike. Perhaps, its just one of those "things".
