Technics SA-5170 Restoration and some Questions

  • I've been gradually restoring this Technics SA-5170 receiver, mostly by cleaning it up inside and out. While doing this, I replaced the front panel lamps (so-called "festoon") bulbs with LED types, mainly to reduce the amount of heat buildup in the receiver. They work, but leave a lot to be desired when it comes to evenly illuminating the dial and front panel.
    Hence my questions to you: have you tried something similar with your old stereo receiver? If so, how did it go? Did you have problems with even lighting?
    I'm not going to spend a bunch of money on LED lights if cheap and simple incandescent bulbs will do. It's not /that/ important to me.
    I'm less than totally thrilled with the quality of this video and apologize in advance. As proof that no good deed goes unpunished, I recorded this with the Sony camera for its better audio quality. Unfortunately, it produces a fairly poor image in room lighting.

    Just found this video. That Technics line was very popular in the mid 1970's. My first receiver in 1974 was a Pioneer SX-434. These Technics models were good quality components. I got my brother-in-law an SA-5060 unit a few years back, fully restored. Thrusting (pun), 12wpc it ain't no powerhouse. It does have a nice tuner and aux input. It can only drive one pair of speakers but that's minor carping. These budget and budget+ receivers were perfect for high ideal, low income dudes like me in the 1970's. Ah, to be young again.

    Bill, I can see your problem right away, and it's simply the bulbs you used. My dad picked up a bunch of those from Pep Boys to fit in our 1993 Mercedes 300TE Wagon, and they barely filled lit the lights at all. However, fitting a set that I got on Amazon for about $7 per makes them look factory and lights the interior up like a runway. Those ones you have are extremely directional, where the amazon LEDs are flat, surface-mount and have a wider throw. You might want to give those a try.

    You can take a dremel or similar and dently cut off the lenses on the LEDs so they get flat in the end. That make the LEDs spread the light more like regular lightbulbs. By cutting them off they also get dim in the end, whitch also helps to spread out the light.

    I read an article awhile back about a guy that replaced the bulbs in his '66 Chevrolet with LEDs. He ran into a similar problem and found a solution using a light defuser. It was simply a piece of semi-opaque white plastic that he glued in front of the LEDs. This caused them to throw their light more evenly, thus eliminating the dark spots like in your display. Hope this help Bill

    @uxwbill got ya, perhaps then a diffuser?, also they DO make colored sleeves you can mount over the led's to change them. as well.

    @uxwbill i agree with @thebibleisfiction, i used translucent paper (the one used for hand copying maps and things like that) to make a diffuser on my cheap photocamera flash and worked pretty well!
    Anyway i would suggest to use even some kind of orange/yellow filter on these LED, don't know why, but i think it would make the device more classic instead of a "retina burning" cool white LED. As always you're videos are interesting and really well made and Nice restoration!

    I liked the Festoon LED's for cars, really brightens things up...
    Maybe you should buy those LED's on strips they sell on eBay. I think some even come with a festoon adapter so no wiring modifications. Of course, you would need adequate room to stick the strips of LED's in.

    You can get a strand of LEDs from the auto parts store. One of those is about half the length of the receiver panel, and should give no dim spots at all.

    I have an almost similar situation. I've purchased new bulbs (8V 250mah) and only one bulb comes on, the one that's at an angle second from left. All the others are on but only show a dim glow from the filament (not fully on). I've switched them around and get the same results. I'd rather stick to the filament type bulb if possible. Don't know what's going on here, any advice would be helpful.

    You're using a different camera to the one you usually use, the sound quality is much better than on a lot of your other videos. These old receivers are pretty cool really, replacing the bulbs with LED is certainly a very good idea in terms of waisted heat and power consumption, did you need to put resisters on them to drop the voltage?

    I know I'm late to the party, but have you ever used the spray-on glass frosting from places like Home-ah De-pot or sLowes? You can also find it at craft stores (Michael's or AC Moore here in PA). It should last with the LED's due to the lack of intense heat associated with standard incandescent bulbs. Probably only need to coat less than 1/2 the glass envelope re: LED directionality.

    I have an SA-5270 receiver and I love it! I picked mine up for $20 off craigslist. All the original lights work in mine and i would not know what to do if they happened to burn out. Do they even sell regular fuse lights anymore? If so where do you get them? Radio shack was no help here at least locally I do know that these are GREAT receivers and i intend to keep mine as long as it will play! Great find Bill!

    "Technics by Panasonic" -- this must've been from when they were first introducing the Technics brand to the USA. Not sure about those LEDs, but at least they're easy to replace, unlike the receivers I've seen which use tiny "grain of wheat" bulbs soldered into place.

    hey sorry been a while, finally got back to looking at it today, I did replace filter caps anyway as I had some nice new ones..., excuse my ignorance by the way, I checked for DC voltage on out puts and found 020.9 mV on the bad channel and -0024mV on the good channel....what does this mean? I also pulled all the main Transistors and checked...just need to do some of the smaller ones...i am learning a little at a time here so any help would be great?

    Hello, I also have a Technics SA 5170 that I am repairing, but am having problems finding a service manual or schematic. I was wondering if you know the original power transistor part #, or a correct replacement part #. The unit I have has four NEC 586 transistors.

      ***** Dan Hefferland I had a similar desire to put in blue LED festoon-style bulbs into my MCS 3253 receiver with a similar dial plate. I took a chance and ordered the LED style with multiple LED lights in a single bulb (12 total for each). It fans out the light a lot more and turned out great. I have observed no uneven illumination. Here's a link to the ones I purchased on Amazon: amzn.com/B00AO04WDC. Here's a link to view also view the outcome: www.dropbox.com/sc/dw9fljseksvikqx/AABY8xtQtsP_uEZpfg5cMaIva

    That’s great! I’m working on one I picked up not long ago. How do you get the cover off?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  4 роки тому +1

      There are four recessed screws, two on each side of the cover. It then lifts back and off.

    • @josiahkaufman6526
      @josiahkaufman6526 4 роки тому

      uxwbill thanks man! I was able to figure it out. Some nut had left some glue on the back edge so it didn’t want to lift at first. I was looking everywhere for additional screws, but was finally able to figure out the problem.
      I’m hopefully going to use some deOxite on it tomorrow, but even using compressed air to blow out 40+ years of dust has done wonders. Thank you for the helpful video and response! Happy music playing!

    Hello man, I recently acquired one of these in a garage sale and it works almost great. Only the right speakers work, when I go left it goes quiet, so I changed the little fuses in the back, but it didn’t fix the problem, so I hooked all 4 ceiling speakers I have on the right. Can that cause long term damage? How to check what else could have caused the problem with the left speakers? And then my second question, which is kind of even more important, when I run it on volume 3 or 4 for over 1h it starts to smell like if it would catch on fire. What you recommend me to check first?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 роки тому

      There is an internal fault that will have to be repaired. It may be as simple as extremely dirty controls, although that is pretty unlikely.
      Yes, you will eventually damage the receiver by driving that many speakers from one channel.

      @@uxwbill any tips on what I should check first? Now I get no sound no more. I have another 2 receivers to take parts from 😁

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 роки тому +1

      You're going to need some familiarity with basic electronics theory, class AB audio power amplifier design, a decent multimeter, a decent soldering iron and quite possibly the service manual.
      I suspect that one or more of the final output transistors have blown. Swapping parts can work, just make sure they're really compatible and know that you run the risk of blowing good parts in the process. Beware of fake replacement parts.

    Hey Bill ??? hope you Can help me ??? I have a vintage Technics 5250 Receiver i acquired a couple years ago. It was filthy. Cleaned everything up , but the FM Started fading , just white noise. Now i don't even have that !!! Is this a common problem with Vintage Technics Receivers ???

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  8 років тому

      +Tom's Tunes Many problems with these receivers are due to aged components that have drifted in value. At a minimum you will require some troubleshooting experience and basic test equipment like a multimeter. Ideally you should have the service manual for the unit as well.

    I have one of these that works fine except the FM only plays in mono and only occasionally will go into stereo briefly then go back to mono. The phono and tape sections play in stereo fine so it must be something with the tuner section.....Any ideas on what it might be?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  6 років тому

      Check your antenna first, and try with as strong of a local station as you can find. If it's still a problem, the tuner circuit will require service. For that you will require the factory service manual and the ability to perform an alignment of the tuner circuitry.
