A Bumpy Start in South Africa - Highs and Lows Overlanding // EP.62

- We are finally in South Africa, but what a bumpy start. The highs and lows of overlanding compressed in one week.
We left off at the Fish River Canyon, pointing our compass south. A lot of rough roads where laying ahead. But all too soon the car starts smelling bad. Milk everywhere, a nightmare in every car. A package broke and leaked for two days into the car below furniture and floors. We had to take drastic action.
We managed to get it under control just in time to meet Olga on Tour and Faramund on their first lag driving north up the west coast. Glad you made it home safely guys!
Our plan was to surf as much as possible before we head to Cape Town, and we had a couple of days with nice swell around Lambert's Bay. Nice weather empty lineups, beautiful!
But for the first time on this trip, the Bluelandy crossed our plans. Sending us to Cape Town much earlier than planned.
Enjoy the Ride!

The smell of sour milk is pretty grim. Hope you get the shat sorted .GrizzyNbear overland are in south africa with there Landy.
Oh yeah it's really bad and you only need a tiny bit to make the hole car smell terrible.
We know if you check their episode 255 (I guess) you will see what happens in our next episode 😉
Hi guys. Another amazing video, just beautiful landscapes. I guess when you travel the distances you guy do in sometimes though conditions a certain level of failure is inevitable. Looks like relatively light damage considering and you weren't stranded so lucky overall.
Thanks you 😊
Yeah I mean over 50k km in with rough terrain is just hard for all the equipment. We're glad that this was the only serious issue we had.
And you are right, we were slow so the prob didn't really damage anything underneath the car.
Had that happen to us in Mexico . Had like you checked it not long before , ares was due to a bad bang from tree limbs jamming up in to it a few days before . Glad you sorted it out and are well on your way looking forward to seeing the rest of your journey as you go . Great content again you two loving your videos very much cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A.🌍🍻👍🏼😁…P.S. a farmer pulled up to see if we needed help and said oh I have a wrecked landy at home with a new one ( shaft ) on it you can come stay at are place and I will help you replace it . ( OVER LANDING YOU NEVER KNOW THE AWESOME PEOPLE THAT WILLINGLY JUST SAY OH HERE I CAN HELP YOU OUT . ) the landy community is awesome the world around . 😎
A bummer that you had to go through the same. But without it you would have never met this nice farmer. Gotta love the community! Thanks for watching Steve 🙌👏🏻
@@Thebluelandy … so true . And thanks again for the awesome videos you share with us 🍻👍🏼😁
So you were in my home town Lamberts Bay...enjoyed the surf...but shame...lost your propshaft. Luckily you are tecnically inclined. Will have to check my Td5 pick up...propshafts as well. Next time...come say hello and stay over.
Hey and thank you for the invitation! You live in a beautiful place! Yeah better check them in a bit paranoid ever since 😅
I seriously look forward to watching your videos. The work you two are putting into showing your journey and the multiple views in Africa is next level. Thank you for the videos and I will continue to check in every week. Thanks again for the behind the scenes of the working life of the Landy and the upkeep.
Hey, thank you so much for the nice feedback! This helps to keep the motivation up to pump out one episode every week! Check out the older episodes and let us know what you like the most!
What an epic journey this is overlanding
Thank you, we know we are privileged being able to do this. Thank you for watching
Nice surfing...🏄
Thanks 😊
Awsome video
Thank you Steve
What crazy times! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Oh yeah, there was a lot happening those weeks
Thanks for the content. Its a pity your vids are behind.. Anywho, welcome to the cape. If its not too late, let us know if you require any assistance. from the cape land rover club. regards paul
Yeah, it is so difficult to keep the video close to real-time. we travel quite fast and have a lot happening that we want to show. And making more videos is not possible.
Thank you so much for the offer! I highly appreciated it!
Although definitely a nuisance, prop shafts are thankfully easy to replace.
Good thing it wasn't the differential itself - now that's a hassle!
Yeah thank fully we where driving slow and the prob didn't destroy anything below the car. And yes they are replaced pretty quick
@@Thebluelandy You were lucky - the props esp the front one can chop through the allot floor plates with ease - I have seen it happen (RH drive cars) and thats exactly were your left ankle is. Truly scary.
Ps Easy with the correct slim socket which you have I noted. Not as easy as you think without surprisingly.
One more reason to be the driver not the passenger 😅
I was learning the hard way until I got the socket the first time I had to take out a prob I had only metric tools
I don't know how far in the past this video is. From your comments about the other group I assume it's a few months.
It's a pity as I am near Langebaan and could have helped finding a new or good used prop shaft.
Most probably you didn't feel any play as the universal joint was starting to seize.
Hopefully you enjoyed our part of SA.
Hey, yeah sadly we're quite far behind with the videos. We're working hard to close the gap but with so much things happening it's difficult. And we can't post more often than once a week while we travel.
Don't want to spoiler too much but the guys from Pon Steyn pointed us in the right direction 👍
Thanks anyways
Try ponstein 4x4 in Gordon's bay.
Thanks we were there and they pointed us to thier prob shaft supplier 👍
Awesome
Driving a Land Rover is a good way to meet the locals....generally in garages!.....You would have thought Land Rover would have sorted out the problems in the later models.
The new INEOS 4x4 might do the job provided it proves reliable....some BMW engines arent..too high tech....The Citroen 2cv...now that was reliable although slightly underpowered.
Please investigate buying an INEOS once your subs improve.....Some have used Mercedes-Benz wagons....said to be the last of the quality mercs...around thirty years back.(the three pointed star makes a great Masai decoration)
This blog seems a bit more cheerful despite the prop problem.
Lol Ineos fanboys are almost as bad as Toyota fanboys😂😂😂😂😂
Hey Bert,
I not sure if we will ever have enough subs to finance a car of that. We have a friend that just got an Ineos I'll listen closely what he has to say about it. I general the earliest time I would buy one is probably in 10 years 😅
But with my car choices I'm more hanging toward the off beaten path.
Again I will say, nobody can beat japanese engineering. 2.7 lakh km driven still no major issue in my 2014 toyota fortuner.
I guess a Japanese car also causes problems if you fit a wrong prob after a lift. This failure is more on me then on the engineering
Know you behind with videos but welcome to SA. Hope you have an awesome time and enjoy our unity beauty. Hope to see you around
Thank you Paul! Yeah we really enjoyed South Africa, it's a beautiful country, and we met so many nice people there. We hope things will improve over the years!
Spilt milk, broken universal joint, things I am sure will get better.
There are always ups and downs, but that's life, and I think in general we have been quite lucky with the car!
Can I ask you what camera you use to film everything? And do you use it also for the shots of the nighlty star skies? Good luck with the prop shaft!
Hey Karin,
We link all our gear in the description.
For the night shots we use the DSLR.
@@Thebluelandy thank you so much!
The truth is Defender props and joints are too small for serious worry free travel.
Nice video.
Hey, thanks for watching!
In our case, this is not necessarily true. It was more of a wrong choice of prob after a lift. The rear one which is putting down most of the power is running since day one without a problem (275.000 km).
Boneheaded comment.
@@Thebluelandy I have run Defenders since 2000 and have my first still with me and IMV the transmission (out of a Triumph) and the axles essentially out of a 1950's Rover P4 are all very weak and break when confronted with any serious off roading. The LT230 transfer box and input shafts are equally feeble hence so many companies claiming improvements and thats before we get onto the very narrow half shafts they all use.
In summary I am correct although obviously if you lift the car and fail to fit double cardon props you are asking for problems. I assumed you had competently altered your Defender. Perhaps that was incorrect?
@@Jabber-ig3iw Quit your jibber jabber Fool.
Yeah, that's kinda what happened, I change from standard prob to a wide-angle one. Which got recommended by several fellow Landy drivers with the same setup.
We're now in the club of double cardan
Prop ran dry and disintegrated.
Can be it's not always easy to get grease in all four bearings, I normally grease them when they are warm still not always easy. But as said before I checked for play and greased them in Windhoek.
Nowt you did wrong chap. Seen a few go that way over the years. Had a friends rear go at the gearbox end and it dug a six foot long hole in the road and picked the truck up off the ground. We were both full time Land Rover mechanics at the time. We learned to buy Gywn Lewis propshafts quite early on!
Awesome editing ... loved the scenery and the lovely slice of normal life exercise on the go. Never really considered the need to work out but all that sitting down between the next amazing view I guess it's really important. As always... thanks both x
Yeah in pretty scared to loose a rear prob on the gear box side. Don't want ever experience this.
Work out is important and we sadly lost the routine doing it in the hot countries. That's way we are both in the worst shape of our lives. And have both lost quite a lot of weigh, most of it is muscle.
The smell of rotten milk is the worst. Glad you could clean it all. Could you get the propshaft repaired or did you have to replace it completely ?
Hey, yeah milk is just the worst.
we kinda did both 😜
Hi, if you come anywhere near the north eastern cape. I have run a san rock art site that is around 4000 years old, and one of the biggest in Southern Africa….
Sadly we didn't make it that far east. We only had time to go until J-Bay
Regardless if the joint has play or.not it ran dry son
It was greased less than 1000km before the failure.
@@Thebluelandy im actually stressed now. I have a crappy front prop aswell. Uni joint hardy spicer? Wasnt a britpart unijoint no name or something?
@@Thebluelandy 1000km dusty conditions and hot conditions maybe took a toll. Did you do 1000km mostly dust and off road. Some dust can be like powder plus some river crossings inbetween?
No it was a Terrafirma wide angel prob… did only 70k km, BUT it was the wrong prob, we have a 50mm lift and therefore we should have run a double cardan
It was 60% tar 40% gravel not the worsted terrain we have been in.
Sorry you had the problem with the Landy. But you always handle adversity so well.😊
Thank you, We're trying our best 😊
Herzlich willkommen in Südafrika. Ich hoffe sehr daß ihr eine schöne Zeit bei uns habt.
Vielen Dank, ja wir haben SA sehr genossen!
hey if you need assistance in cape town dont hesitate just let me know
Thank you so much! That's so kind!
Sadly we have quite some delay in our videos and we're already way passed Cape Town, but we were in good hands there!
