I recently replace wheel cylinders, shoes, and lines, including master on my little 62 bug. I became frustrated attempting to bleed air out. I took a break and came back to it. I managed to vacuum all the air out to where the clear vinyl tubes I was using became solid with fluid, no air. The pedal went to the floor and I was just perplexed. It took me awhile to figure that the slave cylinder does not move very far which is why it is critical the adjustment is made shown here. Anotherr factor was that the e brake took till the top to engage the drum, when each cylinder was adjusted the brake engaged the drum much earlier. The amount of thinking and patience one must have in working on these cars can be draining, but you have to do it!! Great video, Thanks!!

The more I work on them I realize how well they are engineered as a car for the people. Simply engineering, well built and can be repaired maintained with the basic tools.

Your way makes more sense as the shoes are a equal distance from the drum. If you pull a drum and see uneven shoe wear you know that the brakes are improperly adjusted. Great channel. 👍🏁

On. 1966 and 1967 can be adjusted with the wheels on 65 back can also if you have a angled brake adjustment my late father was a Certificate Volkswagen mechanic he had heated those tools and was beating Volkswagen s flat rate.

Mike uncomplicate your life and buy your self a narrow handle brake spoon, makes it so much easier. They don’t cost much and it isn’t a VW only tool. But they do come in different widths and it is under $10.00 most places. Your front does 80% of your stopping power in general where as your rear when adjusted correctly just keeps you going straight.

The brakes on my 69 bus was recently rebuilt but I could not locate a master cylinder for it. Any advice how I can obtain one. Also, I watched your video on the fabric store. I need a windshield and a local company can help me there but they are not able to obtain rubber seals for the windows. What should I order from the store you featured? Thanks for your help and the great videos..

Hey Mike! What size are your front tires and what a good brand to buy in your opinion

    • @Mikefngarage

I think they are smart car size....I dont remember what like 175 55 15 or something like that I will look a bit later. They grip better than the old 135 15.... but are lower profile then those. fit perfectly on the rims. THere are also 165 55 or 45 which are even smaller.

Looks like Mike has the same Nankang tires on his bug that I have on mine. There aren't a whole lot of choices these days but the Nankang's have been perfectly fine for me so far and are very reasonably priced

In my experience nankangs work great on a dry road in a sunny climate but not good on a cold, wet road espescially on a tight corner or roundabout.@@chrisfreemesser5707
Thats when you will wish you stepped up to Michelins, Pirelli or Goodyears.

My brake pedal went down all the way last week. Noticed my fluid reaevoir was empty. I filled up, so, now do i pump the pedal few times, ?

you have a leak somewhere. pull all the wheels and check wheel cylinders. chase all the lines to see what failed. After you repair that you need to bleed the brakes.

Hi Mike, I have a beetle with a pulsing brake pedal, and with new rear drums it still pulses. Could this be caused by bad bearings?

SOME TIME ONE SHOUE WEARES MOOR THAN THE OTHER SO YOU SHOULD NOT DO THE SAME ON EACH SHOO
