Thank you so much for making this video it helped me out so much! I'm also from Canada so you describing how you got into vet school was very helpful for me :)
Hey Amanda! I’m finally crunching down on binging your videos. You’ve inspired me to consider OVC. It definitely helps being in Ontario and there are grants available now to stay in Ontario LOL. Your video before this one definitely helped. As an older person who has no friends and family who have even done anything beyond a bachelor’s in engineering 🙄 (just the two distant cousins) were absolutely no help. Being the trailblazer and breaker of cycles is not easy. So like I tell my RVT classmates, look for resources; we have a collection of the world’s knowledge at our fingertips… use it! With that said. Thank you for being a resource that is SO relevant. I’ll probably have more questions for you later, but right now I’m absorbing. I have horrible studying habits that I need to improve upon. My first semester just ended and while I finished with a 3.6 GPA and have loads of experience, I know I have a lot of room for improvement.
Thank you so much for the kind words!! Wishing you the very best of luck on your vet school journey and if you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out!! 🥰
I did my first internship/shadowing experience about 2 years ago, and the first day they decided to put me in the OR. I also happen to be Jewish, and that day happened to also be a fast day. I'm sure you can tell where this is going. My first ever spay I fainted right when the DVM made the final cut to excise the uterus. Luckily she was a family friend and it was fine. She said I was extremely professional in the way I handled fainting! Pro tip: if you feel faint, don't make a big deal about it. There is a patient opened up on the table and they probably can't come to help you anyway. Just tell them you're feeling faint, lean against the wall, and sit. You won't be sterile but at least you won't fall on the patient or in sharps! She said I had good empathy and I would do well. I have never fainted watching/assisting a surgery since, and I'm working as an assistant now-- so don't give up if you do faint the first time. My favorite place to work is in the OR!
I love stories like this! I think it’s important for anyone going into the field to remember it’s not always going to be picture perfect. I worked with a vet who didn’t do surgery because she fainted every single time! She works for the government and loves her job. There’s many different avenues in vet med and it’s so important to remember that. I’m glad you didn’t let your first experience deter you from something you now enjoy so much!
Me too! My first day job shadowing at a rural clinic the vet told me the first thing on the agenda was repairing hernias on pigs. I grew up in Chicago and had zero food animal experience I envisioned piggies on a surgery table . Nope it was a parking lot procedure with the farmer holding the pigs by their hind legs while the vet did the surgery and the pig squealed bloody murder. The first pig had a small hernia the second was much bigger and I found myself putting the dr’s kit on the hood of his truck and slipping into oblivion. The vet was a super nice guy and made sure after that made sure he explained what was going to happen. I still hate to see any animal in pain but I’ve never again fainted. It’s been 31 years since I graduated and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Waiting now for my daughter to find out the result of her vet school applications.
I really want to get into Guelph! My dream! I’m only in grade 7 but I’m trying my hardest with grades and animals! My average is 81-92 and I ride, own two free roamed bunnies, volunteered at a barn and planning to do more in the summer!☺️ Hopefully I get in when I’m older! It’s been hard with marks bc it’s super boring! LOL
Just wanted to say I love that you make these videos and take the time to help so many people learn! I'm a 13 y/o in Ontario who's always wanted to be a vet and you videos really have been helping me learn more and know what I want to do for my upcoming high school years! Please let me know any advice you could give on volunteer opportunities, personally I've been thinking of doing my community hours at a local shelter, would that count as decent experience in the future? again thank you so much for these vids :)))
Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you found it helpful! Volunteering at your local shelter would be amazing! I have lots of classmates that still work with the shelters they volunteered with! Good luck with everything going forward 😊
Hey Amanda! Thanks for sharing all experiences and suggestions! Is it possible to get in DVM if I take a Veterinary Technician program? Thank you again for all info provided!
Thanks so much for watching!! It will depend on the school you're looking to apply to. Some schools require you to to have a bachelors degree (or at least a couple years completed) to apply. At my school, a Vet Tech degree is considered an Associate Diploma so you would need to do additional schooling on top of that degree to apply! If you're unsure, I would email the vet school you're interested in and they will be able to give you more advice tailored to their program specifically! Hope that helps 😊
Thank you so much for making this video it helped me out so much! I'm trying to get into vet school but not sure how to proceed, actually I am having a vetrinary diploma and also work experience from India..
I started volunteering with the veterinarian that looked after my family dog and then that led into a job opportunity at a clinic. All my other experience I got from applying for jobs. Hope that helps!
Hi Amanda. Thank you for this video. It was very informative and helpful. My daughter, who will be in 10th grade this next year, is trying to figure out what sciences to take in high school to help best prepare her for vet school. She took Biology last year and plans to take Chemistry in 11th grade and possibly Physics on 12th grade. What science would you recommend for 10th grade? She was considering a Zoology or Animal Science class. Also, in your video you said it doesn’t really matter what you take in high school when it comes to applying to vet school. So in that case, does she still need to push hard sciences? Just trying to figure out how much she needs to push harder sciences now, since we know they will be coming in the future at college! Thank you so much! Anne
Hey! Thanks so much for watching!! The courses you take/what you get in them doesn't directly impact your vet school application, however, the courses she takes in high school will impact which undergraduate programs she can apply to! If she's looking at Zoology or Animal Science they will most likely require biology and chemistry in high school in order to apply (If she has a school in mind, I would recommend checking out the university's website to see which courses she needs to take in high school). For my undergraduate program, I had to take Biology and Chemistry for sure, and then they recommended taking physics, which I also did! Each program will have slightly different requirements, but in general, if she's applying to a science based undergrad, they will most likely require her to take the sciences in high school to prepare! Hope that helps, and tell her I say good luck!!
A new subscriber here! ✨Really love your videos and looking forward for more!! I’m a first year college student now and I have no vet experiences... I asked a few places this year but mainly because of COVID-19, places are not accepting students to go volunteer and shadowing. I’m really stressed out because I know it’s late to start my vet experience in college but in high school I was not sure what career I want to pursue. Do you have any tips on asking for shadowing and experiences? And is it really that late to start my experiences in my second year of college?
In terms of volunteer and work experience I think it's important to check the requirements from the vet school you're planning on applying to! At OVC there was no minimum requirement for volunteer hours that we needed to apply! So if the schools you're looking at are similar, I don't think it's too late to start your experiences. I found volunteering to be more about figuring out what path I wanted to take in veterinary medicine or to see if it was actually a career I liked, so depending on your school, try not to focus too much on the number of hours you have but the quality of experience you're getting! Volunteering at clinics may be hard for the next little bit so I would try and get some experience at your school. I worked for a summer under a professor doing research on swine and it was some of the most valuable animal experience I gained!
Hi I have a question. I'm in grade 12, want to go to the same school and undergrad program as you to get into vet school. My average is 95% right now (for grade 11) and I have 2 years of volunteering at a shelter (shadowing the vet, helping out with many medical procedures), Is it very hard to get into Guelph animal biology?
Hi! I'm grade 11 in high school and I want to go to OVC. But I came to Canada 2 years ago so I'm really worrying about animal experience. I had dog but I don't have any other animal experience. I want do volunteer at clinic but I don't know how to contact with clinic because I've never been to vet clinic in Canada. Do you have any tips for volunteering at clinic? Sorry my English is bad.
Don't apologize, you're english was great! It can be scary but I would call a bunch of clinics in your area and ask to speak with an office manager/manager. Explain your situation (that you want to go to vet school) and ask if they'd be willing to have you come in and shadow vets. You may get a couple clinics that say no but don't give up and you'll hopefully find a clinic that works out!
Student Vet Amanda Thank you for the replie! I surprised when I heard that animal experience is required. In Japan, we don't need any animal experience or interview! I will try to contact with clinics in my area. I'm not sure what's going to happen in this circumstance....but I will try my best!! Thank you!!!!
I helped out at a family friends farm! I found volunteering in Guelph difficult because there’s so many vet students/future vets. I did a lot of my volunteering/work outside of Guelph!
A lot of vet clinics will take on volunteer students! Any clinic you are interested in, I would hand in a resume and just let them know you’re wanting to get into vet school and if they ever need an extra set of hands you’d love to help! Getting your foot in the door is the hardest part so don’t give up!
Thanks for watching!! I’m glad you’re enjoying them! My undergrad program was a 4 year degree. You can apply to vet school in your third year, but I ended up finishing my degree before I got in 😊
Hi! It depends on which school you're applying to but for OVC you need 8 pre-requisite courses that are listed on the website, volunteer/animal experience as well as undergraduate degree. More info can be found here: www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/recruitment/en/applyingtodvm.asp
Your videos have given me all the information that i need, thankyou for that, but i do have a question, currently i am a post baccalaureate student of business but i want to get into vet school, so will face problems getting into med school because i dont have a science background ?
You can definitely apply with a business degree! You just have to make sure that you have the appropriate pre-requisites when you apply (which a lot of them are science courses)!
Hey! If you take a course during the summer in a full time semester (2.5 credits) then you can use it! If that’s the only course you’re taking during the summer you won’t be able to use it unfortunately! Hope this helps!
Hi I am 13 yrs old in Toronto. Do you have any volunteering place suggestions? I'm finding it hard to find places to volunteer. Which clinic did you work at? thank you, I'm very keen to get my experience early
Hi! it's been my dream to go to OVC for a long time, but I'm in first year university and don't have much experience. I rode equestrian for 6 years and have lots of experience caring for horses and barn animals. I also have experience with beekeeping and dogsitting with all sizes of dogs (i know dogsitting isn't much) and have handled many kinds of animals. I volunteer twice a week at a vet clinic (i also have a job and am in university full time). I was wondering if you think this experience will be enough? obviously I am going to continue to volunteer throughout university, but is there anything else you would reccomend?
I think you have a good variety of experience already! I had never worked with cows when I started at OVC so don't feel like you need experience with every species when you apply. You can always try to get experience in research or production to cover all your bases. Another thing I would recommend is getting involved in the university with things that have nothing to do with vet school! It's great to have extracurriculars on your application to show that you're a well rounded student. I think you have a pretty solid base already!
How far back did you go with your experience? Are you allowed to include experiences from high school, say horse or cow showing from grade 9 to 12? I have a lot of animal experience from the age of 10 all the way to now, just wondering how far back you recommend I go? also volunteer experience, if I held a leadership role in HS would that count? (i am applying to ovc) THANK YOU :)
Hey! I included stuff that I did in high school! What I did was prioritized more recent things (so mostly things from university), but if I had space left on my application then I made sure all the spots were filled and used experience from high school! And yes, you would put it under extracurricular activities - hope that helps!!
Hey! I have to choose between animal biology and animal science at Guelph very soon. I'm wondering if the vet prerequisites classes also overlap with animal science because I feel more interested in that one but I don't know if I should just go with animal biology. And do you feel that animal science is a good undergraduate to be prepared for vet school? thank you I would appreciate your opinion.
Both programs will prepare you really well for vet school! I know a bunch of people from each degree that got into ovc! I would take the program that interests you more!
I loved the video(new subscriber)❤️I’m in high school and my dream has always been to work in veterinary medicine. However I feel as if my grades haven’t been the best so far and going into my junior year I’m feeling extremely stressed to do good. I’m wondering how much my grade 9/10 grades will matter to universities? and what grades would you suggest aiming for this year? Thank you❤️ I love your channel
Thanks for watching and subscribing!! I can only comment on what the process is like in Canada, but for us, universities only look at grade 11 and some grade 12 marks! So I wouldn't worry too much about your grade 9 and 10 marks. Take a look at what universities you'd be interested going to and get an idea of what their admission marks are (for me it was around an 80% for my undergrad) so that you can figure out a realistic goal to aim for this year! Also no vet school will look at your high school marks so don't worry about that either! You got this!!
Student Vet Amanda aww thank you so much, that definitely makes me feel a lot better. I live in Ontario so my path would be pretty similar to yours. Again thank you so much, so excited for your future videos!!
Hello , I want to get in to vet school I had graduated in biology chemistry and physics after my 10 grade What else I need to have to get in vet school I am also planning for ovc
You'll need to apply for an undergraduate degree program! You can see all the requirements on the ovc website! www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/recruitment/en/applyingtodvm/admissionrequirements.asp 😊
@@shamshersinghkang9722 anatomy, physiology and histology are all courses you take in vet school that you can also take in undergrad. I didn't take them in undergrad, but I know people who did and they found it a lot easier in vet school so those could be some courses to take 😊
I don’t think it would be an issue! As long as you have taken the appropriate pre-requisite courses needed to apply to vet school you should be good! I would email the schools your interested in as they might have different requirements when applying!
@@yourvetamanda Thank you very much! Although I have more questions hehe, but I understand if you can't reply right away! THANK YOU SO MUCH again and good luck+ God bless you and you're family! :)
It is very difficult to get shadowing experience around me it feels like no one wants to give me the opportunity! I am only a first year pre vet student so I have time but I really want to get on it!
I also found I had a hard time shadowing. I was lucky and a lot of my shadowing came after I was hired on at a clinic as an aca. I got to know the vets while I was working and I ended up shadowing them later on! You could always try that route out!
Should I keep in touch with the vet clinic I've been volunteering at since gr 9? I might move away to college so it'd be hard for me to come back to there. but I have a great connection with the people there and it'd be a shame to not keep in touch did you get your reference letter from your high school vet clinic? thx!!!
I would for sure, especially if you’re hoping to get a reference from them! I ended up getting both my reference letters from vets I worked with in high school!
I'm planning to go to uofg for my undergrad for ovc. Ovc requires like 8 courses right? And an undergrad is 4 years about. So is is 2 courses per year? If not, how many courses in a semester ?
A full time semester is 2.5 credits which is typically 5 courses! So your first year you will take 5 courses first semester and 5 courses second semester! You will take the 8 prerequisites courses over the 4 years of undergrad!
@@bacondan That's just for the first year of undergrad! The earliest you can get into vet school is after 3rd year, so it would be about 30 courses! OVC will look at your marks from 8 prerequisite courses as well as your average from your last 2 full time semesters!
Congrats on getting in! The struggle is sooo real
Thank you so much for making this video it helped me out so much! I'm also from Canada so you describing how you got into vet school was very helpful for me :)

Do veterinarians paid well in canada?
Yes! The starting salary for a new vet right now is between 105k-120k!
Is there no VCAT like there is for Medical School (MCAT) and Pharmacy (PCAT)?
No there's not! The MCAT used to be a requirement to apply to OVC but that was removed several years ago!
Oh that’s perfect then!! If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask 🥰
Hello ,
I want to get in to vet school
I had graduated in biology chemistry and physics after my 10 grade
What else I need to have to get in vet school
I am also planning for ovc
You'll need to apply for an undergraduate degree program! You can see all the requirements on the ovc website! www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/recruitment/en/applyingtodvm/admissionrequirements.asp 😊
@@yourvetamanda thanks very much
Also can u suggest me some of the courses should i choose to study-during undergratuate
@@shamshersinghkang9722 anatomy, physiology and histology are all courses you take in vet school that you can also take in undergrad. I didn't take them in undergrad, but I know people who did and they found it a lot easier in vet school so those could be some courses to take 😊
@@yourvetamanda thanks
Its very helpful
Hopefully see u some where during studies
@@yourvetamanda Sorry to bother you too much one more thing!
can u please suggest to me a college for an undergraduate degree I live in Brampton?
Becoming a vet is my passion but I unfortunately do not take physics ...do I still have a chance ?
I think it depends on the vet school you’re applying to! For OVC we didn’t have to have a physics pre-req to apply! I’d definitely look into it 😊
Student Vet Amanda thank you ❤️
Quick question, do I need to take physics in highschool to get into vet school?? Is it a requirement?
I took physics in high school to help with my physics courses in undergrad but it was not a prerequisite for vet school!
Hi! Is it okay to use nursing as a pre-vet?
I don’t think it would be an issue! As long as you have taken the appropriate pre-requisite courses needed to apply to vet school you should be good! I would email the schools your interested in as they might have different requirements when applying!
@@yourvetamanda Thank you very much! Although I have more questions hehe, but I understand if you can't reply right away! THANK YOU SO MUCH again and good luck+ God bless you and you're family! :)
@@yourvetamanda BTW I am so Blessed to find your channel! Definitely gonna share to my friends who wants to pursue vet med :)
Student Vet Amanda thanks for the suggestion!
Should I keep in touch with the vet clinic I've been volunteering at since gr 9?
I might move away to college so it'd be hard for me to come back to there. but I have a great connection with the people there and it'd be a shame to not keep in touch
did you get your reference letter from your high school vet clinic?
@@yourvetamanda So overall its 10 courses and 8 prerequisites ? ( or is this for the first 2 years ? )
@@bacondan That's just for the first year of undergrad! The earliest you can get into vet school is after 3rd year, so it would be about 30 courses! OVC will look at your marks from 8 prerequisite courses as well as your average from your last 2 full time semesters!
