ryan lemon I have dyslexia and autism and I always call myself dumb, stupid and ugly even though I have amazing people in my life telling me other things and I find it hard with a lot of things and I'm 16 and I had to have loads of tests done to help me and see how far I have developed
the writers of this show really pissed me off because they could have developed Ryder storyline more closely and they only lightly brushed the subject. sure, they made it a little more emotional and gave it a little depth but they could have dug deeper instead of just doing one scene with dyslexia and it seems that they mentioned that Sam was dyslexic a few times. I like this show but it lacked continuity.
Hannah Marie I totally agree. As someone who has a learning disability, it’s really important to see characters who are like you and there could have been so many plot lines about it, especially in a tv show about high school
I know...I felt sometimes Glee would touch upon subjects just to get credit for “bringing awareness” to them, but wouldn’t dig that deep. Same with eating disorders. One emotional plot line, a positive, universal message for teens to soak in and then they move on. Oh well, I still like the show :)
@Hannah Marie I completely agree. People have praised Glee for "bringing a new perspective" to "diverse communities", but Glee really only makes background characters stereotypes and tells the audience how they can fit in to become like the "normal" (white, heterosexual) main cast. I hate how they nudge in stereotypes without even noticing it, like how Brittany, the only bisexual character is dumb, or how Ryder and Finn ARE SAYING THAT HE IS STUPID BECAUSE HE IS DYSLEXIC!
I totally agree. They should’ve developed this more cause it’s pretty cheesy. Like this compared to the Burt defending Kurt scene? Doesn’t hold even an electric candle to it
Dyslexic children aren't stupid but they're thinking is really unique because it's different. I adore it actually. It's something really special. If a person doesn't do things that others do or be like others are like doesn't mean that they're stupid but special. Just because it isn't normal, people think that it's something bad.
Thank you for the understanding. I was diagnosed at 6 and have Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalulia. That was really nicely said. My spelling is pretty good, my maths is literally back to front and my balance can be iffy but I am me. I used to think I was silly or stupid as a kid and now, I know I just think differently. 🙂 That has helped to make my day too.
this scene makes me teary eyed because I can relate to Ryder, I'm not dyslexic but I have asperger's syndrome and I know what it's like to have secret identity and not being grouped with the "smart kids". but the way Finn comfort him made me feel better. R.I.P. Cory you're forever missed and thank you for your kind words
Elaina Zimmerman I have Aspergers Syndrome as well along with ADHD and I'm not trying to be mean or anything like that but if you want my advice: you should be proud of who you are and what you have. Don't let anyone tell you that you should be normal or anything like that. Someone once told me that I should be normal and it still haunts me to this day.
The Meta you were not mean at all in fact you were kind and very helpful to those of us who have or have had some form of learning disability. Thank You.
The “I can’t” after she asked him to sound it out hit really close to home. I have Dysgraphia and I haven’t ever been able to sound things out and my teachers have gotten mad.
i always found it weird its such a big deal in america, in holland there's usually more kids with dyslexia in a class then without. nobody gives a shit. its normal. they get extra help and a half our longer to take exams, even an hour extra with finals.
It's a little embarrassing because the educational system is kinda fucked. the whole "judging a fish on its ability to climb" thing is heavily applied lol. In America, teachers don't get paid much so they don't really help the kids more than they have to. Also, it's really not that big of a deal here either. the show just made it seem worse than it is. .
K you are right dyslexia in itself is not a big deal...to those of us looking from the outside, however those of us with learning disabilities think it's a death sentence. now I don't have dyslexia but I do have A.D.D. and everything he said about how everyone treating you different and how in some way you have let your parents down it just builds and builds until you finally snap or you refuse to believe that everything they say is nothing but a lie and you persevere. now I didn't have friends like rider did so I had to do everything on my own now I have graduated college with honors and I work with people like ryder
Ryders speech made me cry so many times Growing up with dyslexia was awful, I didn’t tell any of my friends so when I had to read to my group or write someone’s number down I would mes it up and look stupid I would study every night after school so the information would go into my head But not I’m in university doing a degree I love. It was hard but so proud I got here

It was a nonsense word. I work as a special education teacher and we usually teach nonsense words to kids starting in kindergarten so it helps them with their phonemic awareness skills
Dyslexia isn't the end of the world and it's nothing to be ashamed of. I am extremely dyslexic too and my friends and teachers help me, yes the tests suck as all hell. I was being tested on Dyslexia since I was six and they said I was dyslexic when I was twelve. Not the end of the world, it's just something you can't do shit about.
Actually there is something you can do about it,no you can't fix it or make it go away but you can harness it and create things wether you're drawing, painting, sculpting, cooking and or building a project our brains might be wired differently somethings come naturally to us when my woodshop teacher found out that it was my first time taking that class he was genuinely surprised because it all seemed to come naturally to me so piece of advice use it don't push it aside because it's an artistic gift not a disability.
Well what's also hard about thay kind of.... "problems." is that public school really arent a place where it can be helped.Since everyone a has to progress at the same pace.In fact public school make any kind of difficulty hard to deal with AND you tend to compare how quick and good (or bad) you progress to how other progress
I have numerical dyslexia. When I see numbers, they get jumbled in my head and I can't rewrite sequences properly. Reading and writing for me is way, flawless almost. But numbers...I'm 26 and I have to have my phone number written down because I can't say the numbers in order half of the time.
When I first watched this episode I couldn't look at my perants since everyone in my family struggles with dyslexia and that's why Ryder was one of my favourite Characters because I had said those exact words to everyone I'd ever known.
I have dealt with dyslexia all my life, but it wasn't until grade 3 that I found out why my writing and reading was so far behind everyone else. When Ryder started talking about having a secret identity and the 3 levels of reading it made me cry because that's how I felt back then and now I'm 17 and still feel the same way sometimes.
I have dyscalculia and wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood. Struggled immensely with math to the point where my teachers would get frustrated and I would cry. It’s even worse when you aren’t diagnosed with it because you think you are stupid. I get the emotion in this scene.
I get how he feels. As a kid I thought I was stupid. Then I was diagnosed with ADHD. But even after that I felt different. I was still not as fast as my classmates even with the medication, but I also felt like everyone around me was in on secrets I didn’t understand, that how could everyone else do and understand things that I couldn’t. Why is stuff so much easier. How is everyone so “mature” yet I still felt like a small child. Then I was diagnosed with autism. Even today I am not where I wanted to be in life career and relationship wise. I just have to keep reminding myself that I am better off then most people with my disabilities and that everyone gets there at their own rate
Everyone always says that this stuff that they use to test students Is stupid but they dont realize how much it actually helps the student being tested. When i was in high school (Recently graduated) they did these tests on me the first time in freshman year and they found I had a hearing, learning and Reading comprehension problem with hearing i had to have everything repeated sometimes Tests, Math problems and projects. With the reading comprehension problem it was troubling too because it was hard for me to read independent and outloud and was also hard to go at a fast pace with my reading, but after I started sophomore year I didnt have a problem with reading anymore and I can read at a faster speed than some of my classmates and my friends. And for Learning comprehension It was hard for me to try and stay focus in class or on assignments and had to have help alot, but eventually i got through it. These test really help many many students and I'm very glad that these helped me in school.
This literally speaks to me on a personal level, I always felt like I was never a cleaver as my peers and I was always in the low set and I remember doing all the tests and being so worried that I couldn’t do it, I love glee 💗
I have dyslexia It doesn't mean I'm dumb or stupid it's just my brain works differently to everyone else. People with dyslexia can do the same things as everyone else it will just take a little bit long never give up.
2:28 - been dealing with concealed & high functioning depression and concealed & high functioning anxiety all simultaneously every day for 9 years since my mid teens - trust me, it's not nice
I don't have dyslexia, yet I can relate a whole lot to what he went thru. I recently learned that I have ADHD and that all the years in school where I struggled far behind everyone else was because nobody saw it. I teared up a lot and I'm glad it was showcased on glee, made me feel not so alone.
I have dyslexia and it's not a bad thing it just might make school harder for me. Not because I'm dumb just because my brain works differently. I remember when I got diagnosed they told my teachers to put me in all the higher level groups in school because I have the mental ability but it's harder for me to show it. for example if u asked me a question I may know the answer to the question but then if u ask me to write the answer or put it into words I might struggle. Although, there are different types of dyslexia some with numbers some with words it just depends how your brain works.
I love Finn in this season. He would be an amazing teacher. I wish he was still living. To see Rachel and Finn walking to the doors and say he is at home.
I am dyslexic and it is hard for me because when it comes to exams it is hard for me and when I try to Study but it just goes out of my Head. So I know how it is to have dyslexia
Dyslexia is nothing to b ashamed about there are plenty of famous genius that are dyslexic. My brother got diagnosed at 18 when he started university he got really good grades throughout his school life. He hasn’t let it stop him, doing what he loves. I’ve also taught someone who had dyslexia how to draw and helped her understand the condition, plus found ways to help her she was 10
I'm dyslexic but I don't get helped at school because I've moved school so I have to be tested again which is my 4th time. It took my mum 11 years to get me tested yet she has asked for me to be tested since my first day of school (She works in psychology and has dyslexia her self so she knew the symptoms). This was a really bad example even though I get what their trying to do.
“Am I stupid?” Was the sentence that made me love this character. Too bad Blake is horrible, because Ryder was and still is one of my favorite characters.
Wow, Ryder went through so much, being molested at a young age and being dyslexic. It sucks that Blake Jenner went down the path he did (abusing his ex-wife) because he has so much potential as an actor and singer and he portrayed his character so beautifully😥
Jake told Finn, Finn contacted the district, the district sent a representative, the representative was available and came right over, did all the necessary testing (without parental consent), decided on a diagnosis, started the IEP process (again without parental consent).......all within one school day? All without any documentation, evidence, or actual teacher recommendation? While in reality it can take up to months to have any of these steps completed? If only the country valued education the way they do on TV.
Everybody should have a friend like Finn Hudson the fact that Finn told a teacher and took Rider there says a lot that means he really does care about his friend he wouldn't have brought him there if he didn't care about him that tells you the Glee Club looks out for each other good job Finn R.I.P as well
I actually relate to Ryder because i feel the same thing and i have ADHD and people have bullied me and made me fell like i didn't try hard and that i'm lazy some of my friends have called me an idiot or retard and that was one of my many insecurities.
I have asperger, a form of autism only to social skill as there r different kinds and never knew it until I was in my senior year in 2007. I remember the tests the doctors did was resting on a bed with wires to examine my brainwaves, and the next day was an MRI that played 95's Casper inside, but the picture was flipped (characters supposed to go right would go left) and a buzzing sound that interrupted the movie. That happed in 3rd grade when I was 8. My parents told me in the late half of the semester, after I turned 18, couple months before graduation.
I have dyslexia and this isn’t a test they give high schoolers the ones for high schoolers include the writing like you see him too but the flash cards are for 5th grade and lower they have you read a paragraph and time it then they have you do the verbal to writing portion then they give you another paragraph you have to recite what you just read
I’m dyslexic as well I used to be a shamed of being dyslexic while I was at school years ago now I’m proud of who I am. There’s nothing to be ashamed about. Ryder should be proud of himself, and I’m glad Finn and Jake helped him.
I got diagnosed with dyslexia when I was 5 and I still couldn't spell or read when I was in high school but you learn to over come it and now I'm in the middle of writing a book that will most likely have lots of grammar and spelling mistakes but hey that's what the editors are for right? Wish everyone had a person like Finn in their lives to help us. We miss your Cory. R.I.P
As someone with ADHD, it's so painful to see other neurodivergent people go through this. My mom has a Ph.D and two masters and my dad has two masters degrees too. Growing up I felt so stupid. I didn't get diagnosed until highschool too but by then most the damage was done. When I got my diagnosis I was relieved yet so angry. I was a gifted kid burnout who burned out in middle school and was told about all the "potential" I had. Or how I just needed to apply myself and I could do amazing things. Then all of a sudden being told that my issue was a neurodivergency just pissed me off. Because I felt so mad that the world was so unfair and that it wasn't even something that I could originally control. I really wished they dug deeper into this storyline especially since Sam had dyslexia too. I know it would've helped many other neurodivergent kids a lot growing up.
Something I’ve learned as someone who has pretty noticeable problems with auditory comprehension is that you find creative ways of getting around it. At my job for example, when my boss gives me multiple tasks at once, I write it all down and I paraphrase a lot. It’s saved me a lot. I know some dyslexic people who also find ways around their difficulties. I know how easy it is to feel stupid, but at the end of the day it’s true that our brains just work a bit differently.
This scene shows that Finn would have been the best teacher ever. Thinking of that initial ending on how it would have ended with Glee. Him teaching and then Rachel coming home from NYC & seeing them married. RIP Cory
I found out I had mild dyslexia when I was 15 years old because no one tested me for by the time it was picked up it was too late for me to have support. I understand how he feels you feel so stupid all the time because it doesn't matter how hard you try you can never spell the simplest of words right or read backwards. You feel like everyone thinks you just are not trying as hard as everyone else.
I have a learning disability that is called Dyscalculia. It is the math version of Dyslexia. I found out I had it in middle school. I do not have happy memories with the testing and those spiral bound easel books. I also have ADHD and High Functioning Autism.
I don’t have dyslexia, but I have trouble with math, and have always been in a different math class the everyone else and I can move up to my grade level in math and stupid and embarrassed just like Ryder so this really hit deep for me . I’m good at every other subject , and not math and I don’t know what’s wrong . My dad works for his own medicine company and is good with math and I feel like he’s disappointed in me and probably thinks I’m an idiot for a daughter. After I found out I was bad at math , I had to work with a “ special “teacher for it and it made me feel like an outsider like, I wasn’t a normal kid .
I don't have dyslexia but I can still relate to Ryder in a way. I was diagnosed with a learning disability when I was really young and I've been in special education all through middle and high school. I never really liked it because I was self conscious about it.
"You think a 6 year old is gonna know whether his dad's gonna love him no matter what?" Any child no matter how old should know that. They should never have to doubt whether or not their parents love them
This scene made us realize Finn was going to be the best teacher of all time! :(

2:28 - been dealing with concealed & high functioning depression and concealed & high functioning anxiety all simultaneously every day for 9 years since my mid teens - trust me, it's not nice
this episode made me realize i'm dyslexic. i actually love having it now because some of the smartest people have it :).
I wish Cory aka Finn was still here 💔😞 cause he was the best teacher anyone could ask for ❤ he cared about everyone in the glee club ❤
I don't have dyslexia, yet I can relate a whole lot to what he went thru. I recently learned that I have ADHD and that all the years in school where I struggled far behind everyone else was because nobody saw it. I teared up a lot and I'm glad it was showcased on glee, made me feel not so alone.
this would have worked great for character development, but it goes nowhere. this should be really interesting, but they don't do anything with it.
I REALLY LOVE RYDER WHY IS ANYONE TALKING ABOUT HOW A GOOD CHARACTER HE WAS????🥺💔
No because his character was actually not that good plus the actor is a terrible human 🤷🏻♀️
@@hailieabshire2166you can’t hate the character because of the what the actor did
I have dyslexia and it's not a bad thing it just might make school harder for me.
Why am I so obsessed with Finn smiling at the very beginning ❤️❤️
I love Finn in this season. He would be an amazing teacher. I wish he was still living. To see Rachel and Finn walking to the doors and say he is at home.
I am dyslexic and it is hard for me because when it comes to exams it is hard for me and when I try to Study but it just goes out of my Head. So I know how it is to have dyslexia
Dyslexia is nothing to b ashamed about there are plenty of famous genius that are dyslexic. My brother got diagnosed at 18 when he started university he got really good grades throughout his school life. He hasn’t let it stop him, doing what he loves. I’ve also taught someone who had dyslexia how to draw and helped her understand the condition, plus found ways to help her she was 10
first thanks for the scene
I have a dyslexic friend. She’s very smart and a great person all around. Yes she has her struggles, but she is still able to be successful.
Ryder deserved so much more! I was disappointed with how the writers handled his character later on and eventually written off in season six.
In Poland students dont mind being dyslexics, because if you are, you can write your exams longer :D
I'm taking a SED class now and it's fun to know that they were supposed to get parent permission for him to take that test and to make an IEP.
I have ADHD, hearing Ryder say he's stupid hits so close to home.
You never feel good enough, you feel lost.
I have ADHD too and that part at 2:34 where he says "Ryder just needs to apply himself" bruh that hurt my heart.
ryder is half blood. all half bloods have dyslexia.
zeaussas oh my gods! I'm a year late but it's so good to see a fellow demigod in Glee!💓
zeaussas omg YOU READ PJO TOO!!😂😂😂😂
zeaussas omg YOU READ PJO TOO!!😂😂😂😂
zeaussas omg YOU READ PJO TOO!!😂😂😂😂
일없다 read Percy Jackson to understand
I loved it when this happened cause I have dyslexia too so I could really relate
“Am I stupid?” Was the sentence that made me love this character. Too bad Blake is horrible, because Ryder was and still is one of my favorite characters.
“Not like Clark Kent...”
*Marley turns around and stared in shock: hey how’s he kno-*
Wow, Ryder went through so much, being molested at a young age and being dyslexic. It sucks that Blake Jenner went down the path he did (abusing his ex-wife) because he has so much potential as an actor and singer and he portrayed his character so beautifully😥
When they made this episode it hit close to home
this show helped me with my dyslexia
Me too
It's sad, but you know what? You get to n just like Percy Jackson and he was, is and always will be the greatest hero of all.
Hunkalicious yep
Lmao the fact that he thought it was brain tumor 😆
Finn look so handsome
I’m dyslexic as well I used to be a shamed of being dyslexic while I was at school years ago now I’m proud of who I am. There’s nothing to be ashamed about. Ryder should be proud of himself, and I’m glad Finn and Jake helped him.
Went through this my whole life as I have a learning disability . Had so much testing like that makes you feel dumb .
I hate how people forgot Sam had dyslexia too
I got diagnosed with dyslexia when I was 5 and I still couldn't spell or read when I was in high school but you learn to over come it and now I'm in the middle of writing a book that will most likely have lots of grammar and spelling mistakes but hey that's what the editors are for right? Wish everyone had a person like Finn in their lives to help us. We miss your Cory. R.I.P
I thought I was stupid because I didn't learn like the other kids in my class
Sam has dyslexia that he admitted when he first met the guys. Did the writers forget about that? 🤨
This just makes me wish there was a fanfic with Finn living and being a teacher, he would've been a great one, better than Scheuster
Blake Jenner is a really good actor. Glee had some well-written plotlines still in season 4
Ryder in the end when he talked to Finn about a "secret identity" is me after I found out I might been autistic
His brain just works a little bit differently. And I love his friendship with Jake!!!
💖💖💖💖dw Ryder I’m here for u I am your biggest fan love u 💖💖
I’m dyslexic and before I new I just thought I was stupid I still do sometimes
I have a learning disability that is called Dyscalculia. It is the math version of Dyslexia. I found out I had it in middle school. I do not have happy memories with the testing and those spiral bound easel books. I also have ADHD and High Functioning Autism.
Lol I can relate to this so much. Took me till 7th grade to tell someone I couldn't read properly. Turns out I have dyslexia.
my parents didn't tell me I had dyslexia until I was in 7th grade and all my friend know but I did not. I thought I was stupid
Me to I was told the day before parents evening and only now I’m in my last year of primary school I finally get help and now we have covid
I can totally relate to Ryder in this it's so hard to deal with dyslexia
"You think a 6 year old is gonna know whether his dad's gonna love him no matter what?"
Any child no matter how old should know that. They should never have to doubt whether or not their parents love them
Sam should have worked with Ryder since he was dyslexic too
Sam was already a great dyslexic character and then they just come in with Ryder and start quoting my life story-
I hope you're doing well, despite what you went through.
Dude, he is a great actor
