You want the actual best method of getting Legos for cheap? Ask your friends and family if they have any old Legos sitting in storage or in their attic. A friend of my mom's gave me all her son's old Legos last year, and I've found the LOTR Helms Deep, The 2009 Republic Gunships, the 2010 clone Turbo Tank, and Phase 1 Commander Fox. I doubt you'll find stuff like this but asking is literally free!
If I'm buying I do it with other minifigs or pieces so it's works out to not be too bad. And some stores do free shipping if you spend a certain amount so I just wait till I have a basket that meets that cost then get free shipping.

An interesting way I look for very recently retired stuff places is smaller distributors, like Barnes and noble or a local place will sometimes have stuff that is recently out of production and sold out most other places. If they’re slower on selling stuff than big name stores, you might get lucky.
Mercari has buyer’s protection and has stupidly good deals you just gotta dodge those fees. Give it another shot with bigger sets like icon series. I have saved thousands on my lego collection hopping back and forth between ebay, Mercari, and Facebook marketplace. It’s funny because I hate bricklink but for rare sets like some monkie kid stuff it’ll be your best friend

Sellers have to be more flexible on prices now, but it’s more reflective of the profit you make. Then it’s shipping costs. I’ve sold on Mercari and it’s good, but if you got retired sets it’s kinda insane how much people will pay for rare sets on Mercari

Third party stores like bricks and minifigs are my go to, absolutely love going to these but sometimes they suck if they have crap minifig selections or bad prices. Facebook marketplace I’ve gotten absolute steals off. Retail is sorta up there like official LEGO stores but is more convenient if I want a new set. Ebay is sorta like Mercari but infested with scalpers sometimes. Bricklink I’m in a mostly love but hate relationship with. Sometimes deals are on there but there are even more scalpers on there, but buying pieces themselves for Mocs is a must, although bricklink has a ton of other factors that either make me love or hate it I have spent a lot of money on there, but I am selective with my purchases so scalpers rarely see my money.
Well, as someone that works in retail, nothing infuriates me more than a brand/manufacturer that sells direct to consumers at a lower price than I am able to. A brands own points of sale should be there only for accessibility and exclusive products and should not compete with it's retail partners on price. There are a lot of things that could be said about LEGO, good and bad, but this is the right way to do business. Let the market compete on price.
