    Be Warned!!: Matthew is one of those rare individuals that can inspire you into wanting to go build or make something you never dreamed possible. He is also capable of getting you to snort your coffee (or whatever you may be drinking) through your nose with such force that an Olympic judging panel would give you a perfect score or 10! (Cue Wilson). Thanks Matthew!! Now where’s that cleaning rag . . .

    When you're making the little arches for the ends of the tiny boxes, make it on a bigger piece of wood so the jigsaw-cut is in the middle of the board.Now you've got 2 ends for one jigsaw cut. Do one set of boxes with an arch going up and one set with it going down. Get double the end-pieces for the same work

    • @8559jack
      @8559jack 6 місяців тому

      Drop the jigsaw, just use a big paddle bit or hole saw and then saw the board in the middle making both legs. Sand the two legs and you're DONE!

    This is just a fantastic human! Mathew is the reason I started woodworking..well getting the confidence to actually trying to sell my stuff. Well I started wood working about 15 months ago. Tried to sell a bunch of stuff. Got laughed at on multiple occasions,some people said it looked like I make my stuff out of scrap. Because of Mathew I kept trying,! Long and behold I finally built something people really like and I'm making a very nice second income! Sold 15 in 2 weeks! I'm on top of the world someone actually likes something I built enough to buy it. So wife's happier I'm happier lmao And it's all because of you brother! Ok u getting big now so I hope u get around to seeing this comment it's from the heart! Keep on keeping on brother,!

    I do appreciate what you said at the end. I am wanting to do things like this, make smalls as a little hobby project thing. I don't necessarily have the intention to sell, I just want to learn something new. Try things out and, if I make a buck out of it, all the better. However, my intentions are just to learn. I tried talking to family who have the tools I would like to use until I can afford my own, but I get somewhat knocked down a peg and discouraged. I got a lot of pallet wood that I broke down and have all these plans for... and I haven't made anything with them since they questioned the first thing I made. I need to just throw their opinions aside and just keep doing it for me.

      Procrastinating is the Dream killer, don’t let others steal your dreams and aspirations unless you give it to them to steal. The greatest satisfaction is when you make it all by yourself. I’ve been a carpenter and take great satisfaction in all my projects I planned. Just go for it as wood not used can rot so can your dreams set aside.

      I'm a 60 year old woman and never worked with wood or made anything until a couple years ago. Everything I've made so far has been very rustic and simple designs with pallet wood. Most things sell eventually 😂 and some things I give away 😊. I have limited tools so I can't do some of the things he talks about here. But maybe some day. Do not let others keep you from trying and learning.

    • @8559jack
      @8559jack 6 місяців тому +1

      Don't tell anyone what you're going to do, wait until you did it and THEN tell them what you DID! It's hard to get discouraged when you make the mistakes you make - and you will make mistakes if you do anything - and you can throw it away and try again or rework the piece that has the mistake and possibly make something entirely different which opens your eyes to creativity. Practice makes perfect but practice also makes mistakes, don't forget that.

    For the "bench", use screws for the initial assembly and glue up. Back them out and drill for a contrasting dowel for final assembly before finish. Do this for all the screws as then you can claim "all hand joined - no metal fasteners".

    I can usually figure most things out, but the one thing that usually stops me is finishing(stain/paint). I think once I do a project that would be easy to finish then I'd get more confidence in doing more. I am in the process of looking to make $$ with wood and finding your channel has given me some hope about projects! Thanks!

    For that "nautical decoration" (painted 4x4 w/ rope), it would be awesome if you could figure out how to cut another, tighter angle on the top to make it look even more like a bottle. All I see when I look at that decoration is an abstract representation of decorative bottle and that makes me want it to look even more like that.

    If I were building that first bench I''d probably create a stringer between the braces. Because honestly, I wouldn't sit on that bench as they built it. Without something to tie the legs together it will eventually end badly. Only exception would be if you used thicker very hard wood that doesn't check much for the top and the legs were mortised all the way through. (which is something they actually used to do back in the old times)

    I've looked at these types of benches recently because my daughter & SIL recently moved into a bigger apartment & she has had a list of wants from Momma. Lol She wants a bench near her entrance door where she can sit, take off her shoes & place them underneath. I've looked at bench like the ones you're showing & after thinking I can build that, I thought I could build it better. To me, a cross brace/shelf attached the the cross brace of the legs would make it more stable. Cedar pickets & 2x2x8s are $1.99 each at a Surplus place I shop. So, I thought, why not make the seat and "shelf/cross brace" out of the pickets? She's going to want it painted regardless of what I use, so I could make one about 35" long by 11" wide & about 24" tall with the shelf/brace a couple of ripped fence boards to fit across the the center of the legs. I could make it for under $10. 😊

    Love the first box. I'll need to figure out how they rough the box up to make it look rustic. Something I've not tried. Unfortunately for me, I have another person in my town that is producing the same flower boxes I make. As you say with everything, I need to figure out what to do to make them standout compared to his flower boxes. My only reprieve is that he's selling them for $45 unfinished. This year my pricing is $50 for 1 or $45 for 2 painted. Hopefully that is enough to differentiate us.
