  • Smokey Robinson & the Miracles wrote this song but NEVER released it - instead it was a huge hit for Marvin Gaye. Yet here they are performing 'Ain't That Peculiar' on Hullabaloo on January 31 1966 - just three months after Gaye's version. It's not known if they mimed here to an earlier demo or recorded it again for this show. Just 55 seconds of an ultra rarity!
(btw yes, it's real ... difficult to tell these days.)

    Ultra rare indeed.
It was written while they were touring Europe with other Motown artists (‘Motortown Revue’).

Thanks; good to know! I've corrected the dates in the description. The timeline is: - Song written on tour, March - April 1965. Recorded by Marvin May 5 & 12 1965 (produced by Smokey). Marvin's single released Sept 14 1965 and performs it on Hullabaloo Nov 1 1965. Smokey & Miracles sing it on Hullabaloo Jan 31 1966 - after Marvin's version goes to #8 in the Billboard Hot 100. (Though it's possible they mimed here to an earlier demo version, rather than recorded it anew).
