- By the end of the course, Polis MA students are invited to deliver a brief speech in either Biblical Hebrew or Ancient Greek. Students choose subjects from a list suggested by teachers only two hours before the presentation itself. During this period, the student can take some brief notes for self-guidance but no dictionary, grammar, or any sort of text is provided or allowed. The speech you see here was delivered in 2016 by MA student Reuel Martinez, who tried to answer the question "what would you do if you were the ruler of the world?".
I know the debate will always rage on about correct pronunciation, but i must say this fellow DOES in fact at least make his words sound like he is speaking a REAL language, which is far better than what most people using the Erasmian scheme ever end up doing. good job.
He is giving a speech in Ancient Greek pretty fluently and that is indeed rare. Very, very well done.
The Polis institute teach Koine Greek as a living language. I'm very jealous because they achieve fluency much faster then us who learned using the grammar, translate method.
Θαυμάσιος εἶ σύ, ὦ φίλε! Συγχαριτήρια! Ἔῤῥωσο καὶ εὐδαιμόνει πάντοτε!
Καλώς λέγεις την ελληνικήν γλώσσαν. Πόλις, το έργον σου άξιον εστι πολλού !
Τα δίψηφα φωνήεντα είναι:
αι =ε ει =ι οι =ι ου =ου υι =ι
παίζω εικόνα οικόπεδο ουρανός υιός (γιος)
Διαβάζονται μαζί όταν είναι άτονα ή τονισμένα στο δεύτερο φωνήεν (είμαι) .
Αν τονίζεται στο πρώτο φωνήεν ή έχει διαλυτικά στο δεύτερο φωνήεν διαβάζονται ξεχωριστά (Μάιος, Μαΐου) .
😊Super
Nice one, although for the Koine Greek dialect he uses too many elements of the reconstructed ancient Greek pronunciation which actually pertains more to the Archaic and Classical/Ancient Greek dialects. Koine/Hellenistic Greek had already evolved and used the modern Greek pronunciation. In any case, a very nice speech.
κάλλιστα!! εὖγε!
Ἕλλην εἰμί , τάδε ἅπαντα ξυνίημι.
"ka-ee" ?? I think he means to say "and". Lol. "Kai" is pronounced almost the same way as qués in French.
Yes, in Koiné and Modern Greek. In classical it would have been like that.
αι=e_example:bed
οι=i_example:city
ει=example:city
Other than that great job!!!
wrong wrong wrong.
Yep.
Why why why?
@@Alessandroconti399 I believe he is probably referring to pronunciation. Let me say first that Polis does an amazing job in training their students in the language. They have an outstanding language program. However, they use more of a traditional Greek pronunciation that is not an accurate reflection of the pronunciation of Greek in Egypt and Palestine at the time of the New Testament. It is, however, a pronunciation common in academic circles and more familiar to most academics who study Greek. Nevertheless, the ancient Koine pronunciation was different. For a 2 minute video explanation of how we know this, see www.KaineDiatheke.com/koine-pronunciation or ua-cam.com/video/KhuUc3N_Z9o/v-deo.html
Thank you, @@KoineGreek , your video was very informative. If you consider the pronunciation it is indeed quite strange to hear an Erasmian pronunciation in a Koiné Greek course. If Jim B. had said this I wouldn't have asked. Beside this, I am amazed, as an "Ancient Greek speaker wannabe", how often people cling to this very superficial and secondary aspect of the whole thing, expressing their lack of satisfaction for the pronunciation, while failing to notice the amazing job of those who try to use grammar and lexis in an accurate way. Anyway, thank you for your answer.
@@Alessandroconti399 You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful. I think one thing we always have to remember is that we are a small community (i.e., those of us who are wanting to speak Koine Greek as a living language). Language is a team sport and we're all in this together. While we may differ in pronunciation--and various people will ascribe varying degrees of importance to this difference--I think we can definitely still appreciate what one another is doing. And I think Polis is definitely commendable as a language institute.
Like reading a greek text with english accent . Lol
